Is it worth upgrading from and Air 1 to an Air 2?

The speed would be nice.

But what I'm really wondering is does the extra RAM in Air 2 make things less crashy? Can you have more open/running at once?

  • Good questions, I'm wondering too. I could see myself buying a refurb. I assume the next ipad, if there is one this year will not see any changes due to the ipad pro that came out?

The extra GB makes a BIG diference, believe me ;) The Air 2 is my 5ths ipad (mini retina the one before) and the first time that i'm not junking for more power. And I never had those pesky"low memory"warnings in Auria anymore. Can even run it now with other stuff open in the background like Safari etc.Oh,and don't expect to see safari loading the tabs all the time when you just switch back and forth between 2-3 tabs. For me it was worth for the 2GB alone. But there are other goodies as well,of course.Noticeably more cpu power, better display (with anti reflective coating and it doesn't feel cheap and hollow/plasticy anymore...like on Air 1),Touch Sensor...i think this is the best ipad to date (not only because it's the most powerful). It's stable and reliable (i dropped it 2-3 times to the floor without any cover) but it's THIN.Better not taking a seat on it ;-) I have no doubt i could sit on my old iPad4 though.Nickname:the tank. But it also had the weight of a tank,unfortunately...

  • Thin. I once fell out of bed onto my iPad 1. It's bent but still operable. I weighed 225 lbs at the time. Tank^2.

Wow, you must have a pretty active bedroom lifestyle! You tiger!

  • I'd say yes, but I've also found that the battery drains quicker than on the Air (1). The display isn't significantly better and the thin-ness may not be an issue if you keep it in a case.
For me, the CPU (and the RAM) is the thing though and it doesn't seem to have any problems running anything.

  • Will it be a significant upgrade from the iPad 3? (Sorry to cut in, didn't want to start a new thread.)

I hope to be letting you know, but I will say upgrading from a 3 to an Air 1 made a lot of difference for me.

  • @Ben said: I upgraded from a 4 to the Air2 and I noticed a big difference. you would see a greater increase than I did for sure!

  • I have an Air2, but would probably wait until the next iteration.

Moving to air 2 allowed me to add tonestack and lower ab latency to 128 frames to my rather heavy live looping preset without worrying about dropouts.

What other say about the screen is also true, no hollow sound when tapping and looks nicer especially when viewed at an angle.

The extra ram/cpu definitely makes me feel safer while performing. The battery life is a tad shorter on 2 but not much and I'm still on 8.4 so not sure probably 9 will have evened that out?

  • I easily gained an hour battery life with Air 2 and 9.02 over 8.4

  • 1hr battery + 2Gb disk space = Full Joy!

  • Does the extra RAM improve browsing, the Safari page reload, drives me crazy, I think I would upgrade just for that.

I already wrote about that here.just read a little in the comments above ;-)

  • I'm going from Air1 32Gb to Air2 128GB next week.

I'm looking forward to it, mainly for the extra storage space.

  • is the mini 4 the same as the air 2?

Full Joy. That's what I'm looking for. Seems like a no brainier for me. Typically I make decisions at a glacial pace. With the exception of when I bought the iPad 3. Just couldn't wait. Live and learn, hopefully.

  • you and me both, I hopped on the iPad 3 like syrup on flapjacks, why o why o whyyyy, because of samplr :D
next iPad I get has to have some kick to it for sure.

Massive upgrade.. My ipad3 is unsellable as it's smashed up but still works. The air1 was a beast compared to the 3 so the air2 would be even better

Most definitely yes. I made this exact jump earlier this year. You should be able to get an even better deal now. If you can afford it you won't be disappointed.

The Air 2 is a beast, I upgraded from a 64GB iPad 4 to a 128 GB Air 2 and the difference was huge, much better performance in Auria (hardly ever have to freeze tracks now) and much easier to run several concurrent apps, for example running Gadget and Auria simultaneously, or BIAS FX with multiple additional FX apps in an Audiobus chain.

The extra storage is welcome too, I was running out of room on a 64GB iPad and having to archive my Auria projects to Dropbox as soon as they were finished, with 128 GB it's much more comfortable.

  • Storage space is like government budgets, you can never have to much, unless they invent the infinity drive.

  • I don't like too much storage - makes me sloppy - keeping things tight means I tidy up after myself.

Power-wise, the Air 2 handles everything I throw at it - I've had about 8 apps running at once, all recording into Auria with no hiccups at all. Unless there's a massive leap in app development and CPU requirements, I can see the Air 2 keeping me happy for a few more years yet.

Is this the case with you installing iOS 9 on the Air 2 ? I'm curious as I'm thinking on doing so myself, or is it just what people are saying may be the case ?

Yes, it can lead to bad habits, but I was thinking more as to further development with apps that contain massive sample sets, now re-downloading those every time your running low on space would be a severe drag.

Fair point - I tend to avoid those though, I'm more of a synth/sample-mangling kinda guy :)

No idea. I'm staying on 8 at least until the end of the year. Then I'll move with my backup Air 2, test it for a couple of months etc, etc.

  • @Igneous1 said:

I updated my Air2 and indeed gained battery usage of around one hour. I did gain back some storage but only about 200mb.

As for storage, iOS 9.02 still has some issues I've encountered on iOS 8+ wherein streaming music or video from iTunes seems to take storage until logging out of iTunes and back in again, which clears up the storage used.

Most other storage issues I've encountered are with iOS music making needing multiple apps to move sound around between apps. I use Audioshare, AudioCopy and Dropbox. Multiple copies of loops and audio between apps need cleaning up on a regular basis.

  • so how far behind the air 2 is the mini 4 ?
