The Midi Goodness of Auria Pro

Auria Pro's implementation of real-time midi parameters is highly sophisticated. An abundance of Midi Transformation varieties, like velocity shift, vel. and length compression, randomization, delay, pan, quantize options for the grid and the groove, even making templates, swing, strength, resolution, optimizing, transposing, humanize ...

With such opulence of possibilities of manipulating midi data, I'm only beginning to scratch the surface, just by entering some notes and a bit of tweaking, there emerged a beautiful arpeggio.

Add midi apps like FugueMachine etc. (especially MidiSequencer and its live fx) to the equation --- mind expanding grace ...

  • Seated in that F22 Raptor, don't know how to start the engine! Not to say how to fly it! That is me.
  • Sweeeeet. This is the main reason I'm considering just going for it on my lowly iPad 3. I think it's sort of amazing that what was once an audio-only app totally leap frogged every other MIDI sequencer on iOS in this regard.

I know we're only getting started with AU audio plugins but how sweet would it be to be able to use something like midiSequencer/midiSTEPs/xynthesizer as a MIDI plugin on an Auria track? Or playing interfaces like Thumbjam/SoundPrism/Chordion...? Certainly you can use the latter to send MIDI into Auria and presumably you can wrestle with setting up sync and doing the same with the former but damn, to be able to select one and have it 'just work' as a MIDI track input? Yes please.
  • That is where Kirnu Cream Mobile coming in! Hijacking the opportunities!
  • Hey, actually... With Auria's stand alone plugin store and total control over the code within Auria, this might actually be possible (i.e. this could happen without relying on Apple to provide 'MIDI Plugins' in iOS per se). That is, given enough user demand, rim development cycles and 3rd party developer incentive. Maybe Rim and @Sebastian could try adding SoundPrism's playing interface to the store as pilot program? On top of stretching what's possible within a DAW on iOS WML have proven that iOS musicians will spend money and Auria integration could be another revenue source for iOS music devs...
  • And ... (if I understood correctly) you can set the inputs and outputs to either All, or a specific port or channel.

  • @syrupcore the soundprism idea is really good, though i'm more of a chordpolypad type. As long as i can get chords and scales, without having to learn to actually play piano, i'll be thrilled.
  • @syrupcore unfortunately not many developers seem interested in writing Auria plugins, I've suggested it here in the past because the advantages are so obvious (tighter integration, settings recall, multiple instances etc) but there doesn't seem to be the enthusiasm.

All the reverbs and other assorted effects apps would be so much better as native Auria plugins instead of IAA for example. For AU the jury is out, but Sebastian's comments don't inspire much hope.
  • How do folks like the piano roll? Specifically how do folks like zooming in the piano roll compared to cubasis? Does the piano roll bring up the whole track like mts or a midi clip like cubasis?

Part of what makes a Soundprism pilot appealing to me (other than simply enjoying the interface) is that if you had to pick one guy in all of iOS musicdevelopmentlandia to help grow Auria's 3rd party developer base (which is very low as mentioned by @richardyot), it'd be Sebastian.

In answer to this, Midi clip - i think... Although you could probably do whole track as one long midi clip (I think).

Piano roll zooming is pretty good. Not quite Gadget (which snaps nicely) but getting there.

One thing I would like to have is the ability for Auria to LOOP while recording... This would mean that you can work on a looped phrase of, say, 8 bars, and play some midi in over the top (like you can in Gadget). You could also turn the Midi OverDub option on.  The problem now is it won't loop while in record mode. So you need to, I guess, set the playhead back before the section, start it recording - and get it 'right' first time.

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 Thanks. I was wondering if that made it into Pro. I know loop recording has been on Rim's list for a long while. I imagine it would be easy enough for him to add it for MIDI recording but it's more complicated when it comes to audio loop recording because it requires setting up some sort of take nesting/selection system (and its UI). Plus, the paradigms are a little different—with audio it's usually to capture multiple takes of a passage whereas with MIDI most use it for overdubbing. It's a really common feature in MIDI recording (more so than in audio recording I reckon) that's been around since DOS/Amiga sequencers so perhaps enough people will be missing it to get it bumped up the list.

As I have not put my hand in my pocket yet (there's nothing in there :)) I feel a little churlish asking for features, but the looping of a user-defined section while recording midi notes and phrases is a big deal (for me). I have no idea how hard that would be to implement, but when talking of 'flow' rather than just workflow this is a major plus....
  • +1 for the loop function

Been trying out a bit more midi piano roll editing. If i'm honest, so far it's a little bit more fiddly than MTS (and of course Gadget). However, i'll reserve judgement because these things take some time to get used to.

I've been playing midi chords in from MusixPro as a slide over - that works pretty well - and then tidying up in the piano roll

Occasionally i've had some weird stuff happening (e.g. notes inexplicably reduced down to a duration of almost nothing - making them hard to select or extend - in the end I just deleted and tried again).

The automation could do with being a bit easier to manipulate too (IMO). I recorded a bit of automation of a Twin2 pad's filter - that was fine... but going into the automation and tweaking it is a little slow. I can't seem for the life of me to be able to select multiple automation points (so I can delete or move them all up/down). Anyone know how to do this? I've tried double tapping to highlight and then using the 'select HL' button but it just won't select multiple points. Any help much appreciated.

It's lovely being able to bring up Turnado and apply some Turnado magic to Twin2. There's an absolute wealth of possibilities right there for automation and crazy evolving sound design...

In later updates I'd just love for there to be some core improvements in the bread and butter note and automation editing. Right now i'm never entirely sure if i'm going to move the whole timeline, select note, delete them by accident etc. etc... And I would love to be able to simply draw in automation like in Gadget and MTS. The ability to draw a selection with your finger and select all the notes it touches would also be really useful - so it's much easier to edit/move groups of notes (like in Gadget and MTS). Right now I think it's necessary to multi-selct them one by one which is painful.

But i'm sure it will get easier.

    And no crashes today.

Check out @Kaikoo 's excellent idea of playing and recording midi with Steppolyarp here:

  • Thanks Matt,  be sure to use the draw mode icon in the piano roll.  It makes note entering, deleting and moving much easier (if you're not already doing so).  Selecting automation is easy, you just draw a highlight around the points you want to edit, then press delete (or copy).  No need to select them any other way.

Thank you for provide the link.

I did a Lyra sound to StepPolyArp, I tell you all, it is boring!

    But, and wait..........

If you follow that thread, then add 2 audio tracks, one for Aux1 doing FabFilter Timeless2, the other audio track for Aux3 doing Convolution reverb! Turning both Aux1 and Aux3 knobs on your Auria midi track1. Now StepPolyArp becomes so powerful for real-time arpeggiator for Auria Pro. Try it and draw velocity on SPA, you get what you paid for the power! Magic!

An initial improvement for me regarding automation editing would be a 'Pan / Scroll Lock' that apears next to the spline curves.  This would disable the side to side and up and down scene navigation and would also allow you to move points simply by dragging them around without having to tap/hold them first.  Something like this...

@WaveMachineLabs - maybe something like this is possible without introducing too many potential bugs?
