    Hi everyone.

I was just asked by Munibeast to join the discussion here, and so please just let us know if you have any requests for the MIDI Guitar app. We'll be all ears.

Obviously AudioBus support is still missing, and thats something we will look into next.

    Thanks for the support,
    Jam Origin

Thanks for stopping by--I'm a big fan of the new app! I think the list of things to develop on your web site looks right.

Excellent upgrade. I'm very pleased with the new synths and the amp modeling.

Of course adding Audiobus is at the top of the list. AU would be great but there are not many hosts for that yet. IAA is widely adopted though. Background Audio is important. And perhaps you could talk to Rim at WaveMachine Labs and port an Auria plugin. That would make my day.

Anyway, the Amp modeling is such a nice addon that it's a shame there is no way to easily get that audio into an iPad DAW yet.

  • So what is with two in app purchases? Does the 19.99 unlock the whole thing or just allow me to control midi? Do I need to get both?

Yeah, I'm confused too. It appears I already have pricier IAP but it brought up some page saying I should buy the other (MIDI rig?) or disable it. Haven't worked out why yet.

  • @Tritonman & @Jocphone

I didn't have either IAP from v1 of Midi Guitar.
So, I first had to get the $10 IAP. I think this is the one you can restore if you had purchased the "pro" IAP in v1.x.
After that you need to get the $20 IAP to get Midi connectivity out.

I tried getting that one first, but was told (by the app) that it depended on the other IAP that I didn't have, and that I had to purchase that one first.

  • edited January 2016

One gets you MIDI out capability. That's $20. The other gets you amp SIM, ability to play with new synths and pitchbend. That's $10. Obviously the $20 is the one you want for recording MIDI from your guitar.

  • That was my next question but by essentially using midi guitar as my controller I can record whatever it is controlling through audiobus to say cubasis for example. Been playing my guitar ,triggering alchemy and just wow is all I can say. I also like blending the tones with the guitar but could prolly open a second audiobus lane with jam up pro xt. Gonna have to splurge I think because it really does sound that very good.

  • When I went to get $20 midi out IAP the app informed me I had to get the $10 IAP first. So midi out cost me $30.

Where do I set the midi out channel?

  • Well there goes that. I wonder does this ever go on sale?

  • edited January 2016

If you are a new user it could very well be that way.

An app will usually expose itself to MIDI Guitar. Otherwise use Virtual MIDI

The midi out is right on the essentials screen; use the right/left arrows to cycle through the instrument options.

  • I had to pay the 10$ to keep going after 30 mins, but I did it happily
Love that app, my guitar was taking the dust :D

Incredible update. Definite game changer for IOS guitarists. Any chance to get the MIDI Machine option that's included in the desktop version? Seems this allows you to specify MIDI triggers to string bends etc. Means bending a string could trigger synth mod wheel (I think?!) or other options. How about an option where I can specify which synth parameter will react to a bend MIDI learn style. That couldn't be too hard right? ;) Ok, maybe that's a tad unfeasible, but would definitely pay for an IAP MIDI Machine of some sort.

Again congratulations. App is an amazing achievement.

  • I got the virtual midi out working but can't see where to set a specific channel.

  • MIDI Guitar was already pretty great, can't wait to try this update. Between this and rumblings about a Gadget update, aaagghhh this is the wrong two weeks to not have an iPad!

  • edited January 2016

@JamOrigin I have a request that I hope you might consider, I would love to have Midi Guitar on my iPad and also on a Mac however as I only use it as a hobby I don't really want to pay for it twice, The desktop version alone will cost me about $150 in Australia so it would be nice if that purchase included full access to the iOS version.
I know it is normally the way for developers to sell both their iOS and desktop versions completely seperate, but I believe that bundling both would increase your sales, I am fairly sure if I purchase the iOS version I will never get around to buying the desktop version at a later date, I really do think you have developed wonderful software and wish you great success and look forward to all future developments

  • Thank you, everyone for the kind words and your support!

    @lukesleepwalker, great.

@wayni, AudioBus, IAA, AudioUnit v3 is all on the top of the list, and Auria might be something to look into as well. Glad you like the amp!

    @Jocphone, @hellquist
We've had many asking "why would I buy the $10 IAP"? I'll just try to explain out intentions with it, and where the confusion arise

Our intention with the new $10 IAP is to offer a full midi guitar rig, with synths, amps and effects at a more accessible price point. Kind of similar to other guitar/amp/rig apps. It unlocks everything in the app, except the option to route the midi output to other synths. Think of it as the "basics" whereas the midi output IAP is an "extension". But the confusion is then: what happens to all of you who already owns the midi output "extension" but now suddenly don't have the "basics"? For these of you, we decided that it still mostly work without the "basics" and it will work better than the old app that you bought (tracking, velocity and lots of new features) but it will ask you to buy it if you use the new internal synths or pitch bends - i.e. you kind of need it if you are serious about midi guitar.

Obviously with the two IAPs its an expensive app, our hope is that users will also find it an extremely cheap and accessible midi guitar system. Its a niche product for the few of us and the price reflects.

@TedBPhx MIDI channel selector is another great request. We will add it in the next update. Currently it outputs at channel 1 only.

@Tritonman Thank you :). Sorry, we won't do discounts. Again, its a niche product and we are just engineers - the marketing rat-race isn't for us - we want to send all our time improving the technologies.

@Peteclag Thank you. Yes, the MIDI Machine programming environment in the desktop version does those things, and i think our best option is to try to figure out what are the most useful mappings and include them as options also on iOS. We probably don't want to add a programming editor on iOS :)

@banjofran Thank you. Im not sure its even possible. Apple only permits iOS purchases to be made through App Store and we cannot really sell the Win/Mac plugins through iOS.

Lastly, I have one feature request myself, and wonder if this resonates with anybody: what about patch sharing/collaboration? We cannot save the state of external synth apps in a patch, but everything in the internal rig could be shared among users. My feeling is that we probably need to work on new and better internal synths for such crowdsourcing to really take off, so thats one more thing on the to-do list. Also, anybody tried the new amp cabinet mining?

    Thank you once again.
    Kind Regards,
    Jam Origin

  • Personally I really don't think $30 is expensive for what this app is doing, you could spend hundreds on hardware that would only be marginally better at tracking (if at all!). The tracking is really that good. The addition of the synths and cabinets etc is just icing.

  • edited January 2016

The price is fair IMO, just don't have the funds now and the 10 dollar app would be worthless given no audiobus or other way to record it. But even with the nag screen it is fun to try, nice job!
Well, well! After showing this to the Mrs. She agrees it is very good and told me I should go ahead and purchase it! Should I?(just kidding, of course I will purchase this just as soon as I am done typing!
I showed her this so she could understand just what it can do.

  • I use Midi Guitar a long time ago. The tracking was already good, but now it is excellent. I felt a lack of power to divide the notes on the neck of the guitar, but I resolved this through MidiBridge. Leaving the connected midi from the G2 gets a fund of strings or pads that sound very well with the guitar.

See above for my edited comment!

  • Wow! Amazing good stuff!

This is a tantalizing idea, especially because the community created amps in Positive Grid's BIAS app are so useful to me. On top of that, the cabinet options in MIDI Guitar 2 are surprisingly good! I was getting very nice guitar tones immediately.

I am likely in the minority, but I don't like layering MIDI and modeled guitar patches. So for me, I would want to toggle between the two, and the ability to do so with a foot controller would be important.

Now, this takes the current app in a different "complete digital guitar" direction, and you'd be introducing new requirements on top of the ones you've already identified. But it was the first thing I thought of when I heard how good the guitar tones are.

Well, take it as a compliment on the quality of the amp modeling. Audiobus integration is probably easier and more practical... ;)

  • Am I the only one who feels like the tracking has gotten worse? It could be the Lyra/Auria synths I've tested them with; they weren't as reliable as others even with version one. But I remember Animoog distinctly behaving better than this.

  • No, I am finding the tracking much improved. While not perfect it has become extremely usable. Of course I still have to adjust playing styles for different instruments and some things work better than others depending on the synth but adjusting the midi guitar settings can help as well as adjusting the attack of the synth I am controlling. I enjoy the guitar as a midi controller given guitar is my primary instrument and this just feels really good.

Have you tried adjusting the noise gate? Also, take a look at the velocity settings under "advanced".

  • Test in gadget, using a electric ukulele (recorded live in audioshare/no editing)

  • I play acoustic guitar with a pretty hot bridge pickup. Anyone have experience running an acoustic thru this app?

Thanks Jam Origin that makes it much clearer. I appreciate the work you have put into what must be a very difficult feat to pull off and will be buying the other IAP, mostly for the pitch bend, as other people I trust on this board say it works very well.
