Night Shift, f.lux, screen colour temperature
this topic is not music related, but I think it is interesting enough to discuss here.
On PC, Mac, and Linux, there are small applications like f.lux that automatically shift the screen colour depending on the daytime or by custom time schedule. With iOS 9.3 there is a new setting called Night Shift that does the same. Unfortunately it is not available for older devices. For example on an iPad4 or iPhone5. There is an iOS version of f.lux, but it's not in the App Store.
So for older devices there seems no way to add this useful feature. Except jailbreaking and installing f.lux. What one can do is to reduce the White Point (Settings/General/Accessibility/Increase Contrast), which may help a bit to reduce the bright blue tint of iPad screens.
I think adaptive screen colour temperature and brightness is one of these things that makes working with computer devices more enjoyable. What are your experiences with displays and screens?

I have now had one evening with "night shift" on iOS 9 on iPhone and surprised myself to find it very useful. It just feels easier to focus on the screen. Its a funny feeling but "reduces eye strain" is totally accurate and is also a description that really makes no sense until you experience it.
I'm fighting the urge to necro-bump threads over on a Mac forum where many years I'd cite research about blue light and eyes, then get naysayers claiming pseudo-science. Years ago, F.lux completely changed my computer experience as before it I would get crazy headaches triggered by too much harsh blue light (too many nights in the video editing bay). It's also nice to feel all those feedbacks to Apple weren't meaningless!
On older devices, you still might be able to find the f.lux code floating around out there to sideload it via xcode without having to jailbreak.
It really feels like the screen blends in with the room more this way. Very nice.
truth is it sounds like pseudo-science. ;-)
Its one of those things you have to see for yourself (at least in my case).
You don't need to jailbreak for flux install. You just need to download the Xcode project from git and then load it onto your device. I installed it on all the family's devices without any jailbreak.
That said. It did start jipping out with 9.2.1 so I'm happy for night shift. I use my devices a lot at night and I noticed the impact a lot (on my quality of sleep and feeling in the morning)
Night shift sounds fine for browsers and the like, but what if you are running an art app where colours are important? Can you override it for selected apps?
It's a shame it doesn't work on ipad 4.
I like it, just messing with it tonight and it definitely seems easier on the eyes. Maybe it's just me, but it seemed to slowly fade to the new tint over time as the sun went down (I have mine set to sunset to sunrise).
You can switch it on/off via the control center!
But then I'd pribably just forget to turn it back on again...
that's a good idea, since (Nov 2015) it is no more officially available. But you need a Mac with recent OS, is that right?
the difference is really hard to overlook.It's literally like day and night
You can set the amount in the settings but i don't use more then 30% otherwise it's too "yellow"for my taste.
I have it on pretty much all the time now and find it funny just how really BLUE it looks when it is off heh
I'm finding this to be more useful than I thought it would be. It's making night time work / play far less wearing on my eyes.
I've got it on right now..you all look kinda cheesy..but I'm color blind
I like this little feature but i couldn´t sleep better because of it sadly!
Now next i would like to have a kind of Philips Ambilight! I love it on my TV and can´t live without it anymore. First i thought it´s useless but then you can´t go without it anymore after adopting it.
It has no effect on my sleep whatsoever
and everything looks like I smoke to many cigarettes
No, it's on off only
I think this feature needs much more work
Who wants to look at videos & pics like this?
I think it's really half assed
Why doesn't the screen brightness adjust to the surrounding light?
Wtf?
It's all about bright blue light ...
It does have a colour temp slider in settings.
It does not make my neighbors shut up at night though
Also some idevices have the bluish screens some have the warmer yellow screens. I have 2 iPhones, one of each. Much prefer the warm yellow.
I like the apple color calibration on OS X and iOS
Looks very natural not these oversaturated colors
Windows always looks very blue to me.
Somehow i doubt that it makes a difference after just two days of trying it...
this is implemented in iOS long time ago.
And for any standard computer monitor, there is a menu where you can set colour temperature. Doesn't matter what OS you are using.
It is, but it doesn't work (to my satisfaction).
If it would work I wouldn't have to adjust it constantly manually.
Maybe it'll work better on the new pro, much more sensors in it ...
true, sometimes I also had to adjust brightness manually with older devices, 2nd and 4th generation. The iPad Pro seems to do it better, but I'm not sure yet, may also depend on the OS version.
The new 9'7 pro seams to have new tricks ...
I imagine this will be helpful to a lot of people and their eyes over time. Here in the UK, you can now buy blue light filter coatings for glasses, designed primarily for people who use phones / tablets a lot.
It's so helpful to get here. I once used F.lux on my Windows computer for about one year since I could easily get eye tired with working in front of computer for more than 8 hours. Also, I always remember to turn on Night Shift on my iPhone. Before I use iPhone, I installed Bluelight Filter on my One Plus 1. I know I should blink a lot and give more rest to my eyes, but, I failed to do so.

After using F.lux for months, I feel tired with the screen color. Or it was not the color, the screen becomes darker. Then I began to use the special glasses for computer use, which is T'aime blue light blocking glasses. I enjoyed it very much. Just a little thing, it will change the screen to be yellow. I checked for several times, blue light blocking will cause color distortion. Luckily, it will not decrease the clarity. If you are doing color sensitive work, don't use them.
There are also some tips to reduce eye strain, let's work together to combat it:
Sit as far back from the monitor as possible;
Follow proper typing protocol (back straight, eyes level with the screen, hands hovering over the keyboard, etc.) as this will line your eyes up for proper monitor usage;
Use blue light filter apps when playing on phones and tablets;
Take frequent breaks, and blink often;
Do all work and reading with black font on a white background if possible;
Enlarge fonts for easier reading and avoid fonts with “feet” as they tire the eye;
Also remember to get vitamin supplements, blueberry is the best one to eye health.
