  • Mister Reid, this is so very well done. But, yep, I'm scared shitless now, confused and pretty much beaten down already before we get started. I am PRESUMING that this is part of your Marine-style 'knock-em-down and then build-em-up' strategy. Right? :)

Was sitting here with my iPad all loaded up and ready to follow along like a polished up willing young student, but now I'm going to go smoke out the back with the bad boys and hope for the best.....

@Reid: first of all, I love your videos!! I'm sure they are of great help to many users.

Two small suggestions on tutorial 2 to make it a bit less dramatic ;-)

If you tap "Load" accidentally, directly followed by "Close", nothing will happen and the currently loaded pattern will remain as it is.

If you do load a single new pattern, you can go back to the previous one by tapping "Undo". The loading of multiple patterns at the same time cannot be undone though.

EDIT: By the way, loading a new pattern in a slot that already contained a saved pattern will not destroy the latter. The original pattern will still be in the pattern library and can be reloaded any time.

  • @marinus Thanks for the info I have put up a new video that is missing the dramatic ending.

    https://youtube.com/watch?v=wsKax3o4yxQ

I will get into this stuff in the next 2 videos, which will involve saving patterns and managing patterns. So I'll tell people about loading multiple patterns.

If it's okay, I'd like to correspond with you privately when I have questions. The last time I used your contact form you wrote back, so I'll try that.

The way I'm doing the videos gives me the ability to update them, although I dread the idea of a massive update making them all wrong. Don't know what I would do then, but I will try to tweak them.

The problem with YouTube is that you can't update videos, you can only take them down and put a new one up, which will make any saved links useless. Maybe I will make a separate YouTube channel for these videos at some point.

  • Thanks for that one @Reid ! That cleared that up for me. It seems odd though that there isn't more of a safeguard built in, but knowing how it works will help.

If you want to avoid the broken links around the web you could use a static mirror to spread the word so if you are in need you just change the href on the mirror.

The irony is that in many ways your efforts are probably a force-multiplier for change. Helping others while also being a form of research/insight for the developer...you have also got me thinking about the nature of uploading video files (which I do a lot of in another life here) and how, while I think of distributing video as a modern tool, the method (lack of ability to selectively update) is surely going to feel like very old technology in the not too distant future...room for a breakthrough/leap forward here by someone...

@mschenkel.it The static image thing sounds complicated.

I will make a separate YouTube Channel just for these videos. So if some blogger is writing about DrumPerfect Pro and wants to mention my videos, they can just link to the page, which won't change.

Also, I want people to find the videos on YouTube searches, and the ones that have the most views get priority. Every time I update my videos they will go to the end of the line again. So if some of my videos stay up and get popular, the will lead people to the page. Which people can subscribe to if they want.

I'm not monetizing this, so this is just something I'm doing because I think it needs to be done.

And I do enjoy making them, and every time I make one it goes faster.

@JohnnyGoodyear Re your comment: " I am PRESUMING that this is part of your Marine-style 'knock-em-down and then build-em-up' strategy. Right?"

I don't understand your point exactly, but what I am trying is to make the videos occasionally fun and not just informative. I love the app so I can tease it. And I do hope that the videos will suggest directions Marinus can go in updates. If I suggest a problem, maybe he'll solve it.

I want these videos to be more than video manuals, but also suggest ways to use the program. I believe the program is more useful if you ignore some of its features. There are so many that it can be overwhelming. I find if I limit my options I get more done and use less system resources.

But more importantly, I can go on for a long time explaining all the things that the app can do, but there are a few times when I want to go LISTEN UP! THIS IS IMPORTANT! So if people only learn those few things they will be ahead of the game.

  • @Reid
Just saw a video where at the very beginning there was a pop-up redirecting to the updated version.

  • @mschenkel.it That's an idea, I guess. Seems a little messy to have different versions around. There's no reason I couldn't end up updating these numerous times.

I bet I will be able to solve this problem a lot of the time using Annotations.

  • I just set the obsolete video to private, and tell everyone on the internet not to go there but to go to the new place instead. I used to mess around with editing the existing video in youtube’s ridiculous tools, so that it is now only a fraction of the length, and put a note in the text underneath to go to the new one, but that didn’t stop people coming to the incorrect one. I view it as youtube’s fault now, so I’m not going to bother going out of my way to compensate for their lack of thought on the matter, it’s far easier to simply set the incorrect videos to private, or delete them, having tweeted or posted on the internet, and assume everyone now knows what I told them to do.

  • Doing.

  • on it. Great videos!

  • Wow, that was great!! Thanks!

  • Thanks!!! I loaded up tons of midi drum clips into the app but I wish there was a way to load them into the song. I could only do one at a time. Then, I still need to learn how to convert them to patterns.

  • Subscribed, thanks!

  • I just put up my third tutorial, "Saving a Pattern"

Sorry it's taking me so long to do these, but work has been busy, and they are a lot harder to do than I thought they would be. But I am determined to see them through.

Let me know what you think.

  • Thanks a lot for sharing and keep working!

  • Awesome!!! Thanks for all your efforts. Really helpful information.

  • Great work! I was wondering when your next installment would show up.

One thing I've never been able to quite figure out with DPP is how to create my own kits. I have tons of drum samples and get frustrated every time I try to create kits with them.

Are you planning any videos about importing samples and creating kits??
    Keep up the great work!

  • @yowza I'm planning to do everything, I just don't know how long it will take me. I'm trying to follow a logical progression. The next one is file management, and then finally I will spend some time on the pattern page--show what all those buttons do. Then Songs. And then the Kit Page. Then playing pads. Once I get through the basics, it will finally get interesting for me, because I want to show more experimental uses of the program.

In terms of making your own drum kit. Pick an empty spot. On top there is "Clear, Load, Save, Save As" Save the name of your kit as YowzaKit (or whatever)
You can take instruments from other kits. So, for example, if you like the bass drum on the "Acoustic Full" kit, just select, copy it, and go to the equivalent spot on your kit and paste it.

I find it easier to start with one of the kits that is already in the app, and then just revise it to suit me.

Loading samples is easy. Just touch an empty spot, find a sample you like and hit close. It does work like the pattern page though and will load the last one you listened to. You can either go in and select another one or use the select button on the bottom to select the sample and then erase it.

For me the big breakthrough with putting in samples is that I used iFunbox. A lot faster than loading samples up through audioshare or audiocopy.

I would also say, that the hard part isn't loading samples into your kit--it's finding the right ones to use. You can get really awful effects with drumperfect by choosing samples that don't go together well. I have found with things like cymbals, it's kind of better to just leave them alone. But I will get into it...

Hope this helps. The Quick Start for this page is helpful, as is the manual. :)

  • Thank you!

  • Thank you so much for these. I wish devs would consider tuts like these essential when releasing their wonderful though not always intuitive apps. I'd rather they delay release a few months get all their tutelary ducks in a row then release. I think their product launches would be more successful that way.

  • Thank you ! It's really useful to watch videos like yours.

I'm really digging your tutorials, sir. Subscribed, and thanks for taking the time to share

  • Thank you all for looking at them. It gives me a reason to keep going. The videos have about 75 views and I have less than 40 subscribers, but I think the numbers will grow.

There will be information and tips you are going to find in these tutorials that you won't find in the manual or QuickStart. Things I'm learning by asking Marinus and Gilbert questions.

I am making them as a user and not a developer, so I am coming from the perspective of somebody who screws up a lot. Yesterday I was working on a tutorial and I inadvertently erased three patterns I made. So in my next tutorial I am going to make a big fuss about "Take Your Time When You Do This." Maybe I will be able to help one person from losing their work.

I also think this program is too big. For most of us, it's a bad idea to use all of its features. You'll never get any work done. So for a lot of us it might be enough to just use the "humanize" button. Sure, you can do more, but that one button will make your patterns sound really good.

  • Okay, here is my first video. Sorry it took so long, but there were many false starts as I tried to figure out how to do them. This isn't exactly a tutorial, but you might learn a thing or two. Anyway all my DPP videos from now on will be more instructive.

I tried to post this as a separate discussion, but it didn't go up for some reason.
