@u0421793 another lovely post thank you.
And I would say well-timed for me as I feel my workflow zeroing in on one synth of late, using it as you say by sequencing, then recording audio from one synth voice at a time (perc, lead and bass). Doing this with Strokemachine and Cubasis, where sequence-then-bounce-to-audio is quite fluid.
But.
I have to be honest and say that my real workflow (which has been quietly digging in for years) tells me the above configuration will be short lived. For example I am already thinking about putting Virsyn iSyn Poly, and Sunvox!, in service with Cubasis using the same track building approach. And of course the onboard Micrologue is itself a very nice instrument. And the AUx synths! And my shiny collection of $5 and unders...and the 2 Moogs My god they cover everything! And all things Icegear, Virsyn...
Because my real workflow in iOS (50+ synths) (and in laptop, nearly 4 x that) is to open up a DAW and select synths on a whim and start trying things that occur to me as I sit there. Pretty much different synths every time. I think about "composing" and my childhood hero Ludwig Van, and all the "patches" he had access to in his "workstation" and I smile, and it's on like donkey kong. Okay, @JohnnyGoodyear pass the popcorn.
It still counts — it is one thing, one unit, one box, one synthesiser. So, choose — that, or a Monotron?
You may be lonely and sad, bereft there on the island that the OP didn't even mean to send you to, but take heart, @supadom, @JeffChasteen, and I will all be there with you in our Bebot tux and with our little rolling little feet (which would be a bitch on the sand, but we wouldn't complain)....
I'd be very happy with a Roland Jupiter 8.

Hardware-micro korg
I dig these because, while they have deep edit features, I can get great sounds just by scrolling through presets. Less is more for me as I quickly get confused/frustrated
I also now consider many vintage analogue synthesisers and most modern modular wanking machines are at a disadvantage. A “one synthesiser” approach becomes too difficult hampered by lack of any immediate patch saving and recall.
My OB-6
Sending the karma midi out to be used inside of gadget would be absolutely wonderful! Third generation Karma if memory serves me.
Kaos Pro it has been a mixer, effects processor, an incredible synth, and I can take it anywhere. 2010-to present knocking on wood because I might cry if this sentimental piece of gear pooped out on me. I still own a Roland VS-840GX and a DR rhythm which work perfectly, so I think i'll get another twenty years out of this green monster.
@TheMaestro
How do you get the keyboard out of under the table?
At first I tried some old christmas candles and that didn't work out to well. Then I was surprised to find some bed props which have a pretty sturdy lift. I reinforced it with some padding and walah I now have a desk which hides my massive piano.
The desk has a slide which extends the desk and opens a secret compartment which allows me to hide wires and such. I just wish it didn't have the damn cabinets.
You like having everything upright, similar to the orientation of the pictures on the wall. Would the piano work that way too?
lol no I just wanted to save space since that desk was built for a little old lady. It was my grandmothers, and I figured a way to slide the pro line stand in and out without having to get underneath a tiny crawlspace. I have a bench and everything and it is playable underneath the desk as well. I also built some stands and they work very nicely. similar to a composer stand. Sometimes I want it resting on the table (The kaos) or if I am not using it and want more space I just put it on the stand. The mixer however stays on the stand because it helps organize my wires which are hidden in that little space. Notice how it's sunken down a little bit. Anything to not have back problems like my father later in life. I don't like to look down constantly as it strains the eyes as well.
Plus I struggle with OCD and I like to keep things as organized as possible. They are not fixed to the stands I can lift them off with no trouble.
I had to resize the quality to post them but you get the point it saves a lot of space by resting them on stands. OCD is a bitch.
The Minilogue with its 1 knob per function and being a simple, basic synth, not overloading you with stuff all over the panel , makes it so fun and fast to use.
But at the moment my choice would be Elektron Analog Keys. We are still in the honeymoon phase. But I'm fairly sure this one will be with me for a long time. I think one of the reasons is that at its core it's "only" a 4 voice synth, but with Elektrons technology those 4 voices are enough to make full tracks on the unit, drums, basslines, pads, leads, arps etc, all going on at the same time. That 4-voice-limit forces you to be a bit creative, and the tools needed for that creativity are there inside the unit. I like it. It's always exciting to see how far you can take things, or if this or that is possible. It's deep. It sounds delicious. And...there's a joystick.
Desktop/laptop: Alchemy (Massive my 2nd choice)
IPad: Gadget (I know, I'm cheating) with Z3TA+ my 2nd choice
I've been out of the hardware loop for some time. On iOS, I'd live to cheat and say Gadget, but I'll play fair and say Animoog. It's simply so stunning sounding as well as so expressive. If I had to choose a piece of hardware, I miss my DX11. If I had my music room back, I'd be making the heavy investment in the new OB8 based on all the videos I've watched. it's my dream hardware synth.
Gadget is fair. With special “front panels” disguises per patch category subset, it can be thought of as one single complete quite clever walled-in multitimbral synthesiser workstation.
I had a Minilogue, but I actually sold it a couple days ago (to someone in Colombia - bet there aren't very many in country there yet). While I really enjoyed it, I found I did not use it enough in actual composition to justify the cost. It's just so much easier to reach for a more robust softsynth. On desktop my pick would be U-He Diva. On iOS, Sunrizer. I'm also a really big fan of Helsinki and Chiang Mai in Gadget.
Track at a time can work and work well but you probably wound up with all that kit because it can be incredibly slow going, particularly if you want to do stuff you get accustomed to with a midi sequencer like tempo changes or transposition. That is, for recording an old tune as audio, a single voiced synth that does what you need and some patience is fine. Less so for multi-part electronic composition but obviously, courses, horses, forces, porches etc.
On the desert island tip, I'd be inclined to get a big old multi-timbal synth/sampler/sequencer like those mentioned above (or a k2600) but those things generally lack knobs for synthesis and are rarely fun or inspiring to me. Presuming I could bring a midi controller to the island, I'd probably go with Nanostudio. Or Logic if that isn't way beyond the cheating pale.
"beyond the cheating pale" is a record waiting to be made.
Got this country progression going on in my head.
What is this island everyone is going on about? And does it have a cheating side?
Which of my synths I'd want to keep only depends on what day it is. On Mondays it's Sub Phatty-day, Tuesdays are reserved for the Mopho X4, if it's Wednesday the Pulse 2 comes handy, Thrusday is iVCS3-day, then on Friday I'm in love with the OP-1. Saturday is perfect for the microkorg, and on Sunday I'll be droning away with EWR ZUUG Drone Station. Simple as that.
Does my modular count as one?
MFB Dominion 1 - the synth that keeps giving and keeps the user smiling!
Even if it were Tonto it would (although, wait, no, that’d be ridiculous calling it one synthesiser, but I suppose it is).
That would be my choice. I can spend an eternity noodling with my Eurorack and be happy. I love spending hours coming up with a totally original sound and then pulling out all the patch cables knowing that I'll never hear that sound again. It's quite therapeutic. I've written songs with it too.
Peace \/
