Bluetooth Compatibility

I've noticed some apps will work if I'm using bluetooth headphones or a bluetooth external speaker, and some don't. Some send output to the bluetooth speaker/headphones if they're launched standalone, but don't output if they're launched via other apps like AUM.

Is this something simple that devs could just flip the switch on if they wanted? Or, is it more complicated than that?

And, I wonder with the headphone jack now gone from the iPhone 7, and Apple exploring removing it from laptops, and maybe iPads... will more devs be compelled to make their apps bluetooth speaker/headphone compatible?

I know some say there are latency problems, but it doesn't sound all that off to me. Yes, a little... and for some critical stuff maybe an issue for some, but it's awfully close. Close enough, that I bet the next tweak of bluetooth might get it close enough for most. Definitely a lot less latency than AirPlay.

Is there some other reason half the apps don't seem to support bluetooth speaker/headphone output?

    no app should ever have to support a specific hardware device, that should be handled at the OS level (and usually is).
    There are 2 versions of Bluetooth with very different performance specs.
    Current iPads/iPhones (up to model 6) use converter chipsets of remarkable quality.
    To meet these specs wirelessly is a serious challenge, at least in the past such stuff was awefully expensive.
    Maybe it's about to change with new hardware...

    Well, it seems like the same apps that will output to my bluetooth headphones via my legacy iPhone 5 are the same ones that output via bluetooth on my newer iPad Air 2. So, that doesn't seem like it would be hardware related.

    I'm likely not understanding you though.

    I'll be using my bluetooth headphones and decide to mess around in an audio app for a little while. Mostly I'll use wired headphones, but sometimes if the bluetooths are all I have with me, I'll try and see. Seems to be scattered all of the map with regard to which apps will output to bluetooth and which don't. Doesn't seem to hinge on the app's age either. Some newly minted apps don't, while some older and nearly abandoned apps do.

  • there is a Bluetooth section in the developement software.
    It's up to the developers to decide if they use the functionality or not.
    (that's why I called it a system issue)
    As low bandwidth Bluetooth is likely to produce inferior audio, there probably wasn't much interest in the musical app domain, so one app may support it and another not.
    (dunno details, though - I simply ignored the feature for the reasons above)

  • Browsing old threads in this wonderful forum... So this tripped me up travelling yesterday. It took me a while to realize that Elastic Drums was blaring out of my iPhone when I had just been playing with Caustic through my Bluetooth headphones. I expect we'll see updates become standard with the demise of the jack.
