TF7 update

Says improved operation with AUM, Cubasis2 and AudioBus.

I think this is one synth many have missed the love of. It's really cool with all the addons.

Comments

  • Was just playing with it the last few days. Love the FX and the whammy/vib. It is really sweet!

  • Love it. I picked this up a couple of days ago with the addons. I appreciate the improvements. This would be even more awesome with a hold button and midi out.

Happy for this, but it's a little frustrating that it doesn't have midi out, which means you can't really make use of its unique interface.

In fact, hosting TF7 in AUM, I can't get any sound out of it at all. As soon as it's added into AUM, the app's sound cuts out. I can't find a Background Audio setting. None of the AUM built-in keyboard configurations — Keyboard to TF7 Virtual or TF7 Inter-App Audio (or both) — let me play TF7. Surely I'm missing something.

FIXED: Oh, the magic of delete and reinstall! Works like a charm.

Yeah Midi out fails. I Hope it come s some day.
I like TF7 and his arps really much.

  • I'm not really into synths but I have to admit that TF7 is one of my favorites from the beginning... It has a unique sound and interface ;-)

  • Is it better/worse than FM4 or just different ?
I own both but uninstalled TF7 a long while back.....bearing in mind I am using FM4 already, and that Brambos has his FM synth in development, is it worth me re-installing this and giving it another go ? What would I gain from it ?

  • Link TF7 up to B-Step Pro and lose hours tweaking :)

    I've got both.
I find I can get lost in TF7 with it's more complex algorithms and fx.
Both are great. FM4 let's you in quickly. TF7 leads you into a labyrinth and never lets you out again.
Just connect up a groovy sequencer of some kind (I use B-Step Pro) and just get patterns running while you tweak. Stuff just happens ;)

Ahh ok, I could use FM4 when i want to find a sound quickly and only tweak a little (preset surfing) and then use TF7 when i want to get down and dirty with programming a sound ?

What is the install size for TF7 these days ?

  • FM4 will get you the traditional FM sounds (think '80s), whereas TF7 is its own thing. Call me old fashioned darling, but I've found a lot more uses for FM4 in my music so far. I also want the midi out for this app as I like the interface.

Yeah, 'Classic FM' is nice. DXi might be worth a listen too, it's a bit 'cleaner' but the patch-management is awful.

Phasemaker is also in the works from the dev behind Ruismaker and Ruismaker FM so expect a top-notch AUv3 for 6OP FM-Sounds.

Yes. I have DXi and agree about the patch management. It's a head twister trying to create a patch without destroying the original preset. Looking forward to Phasemaker.

  • The whole UI is terrible in dxi not just the patch management. Shame he wouldn't use my suggestions to launch it to the next level.

Does anyone know the TF7 developer? And you coding-savvy types: is midi out a very difficult proposition? I had such an enjoyable TF7 session last night, but I so wish I could go into the recording and condense my "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" noodling into a concise, Aphex Twin-like melodic diamond. (This will make sense to almost no one; it just means that I want to edit down to the essence and get rid of a few bum notes.)

I posted a plaintive request on the Tenacious Frog web forums. I was hardly the first person to beg for midi out — people have been asking for it since 2014, and the dev (Pier?) has repeatedly said it's in the pipeline.

Going on the record as a usually cheap SOB:

I would happily pay a $3.99 or whatever IAP to have midi out on TF7.

I think it's that good. (I also have FM4, and to me it sounds like it's being played in a cardboard box under the bed....)

And the volume was significantly less than other apps, I can't remember if that was fixed. I know I never use it. Actually, I own all of the synths mentioned and don't think I've ever used them on a final product, so perhaps I'm not the best one to comment. I did try to use dxi though when we had to do "Never Gonna Give You Up" for a wedding, but no dice.

Toast. While they're both in my 'Division One' synth folder, I much prefer (the sound of) FM4 to TF7.

  • In the tf7 Forum:

Yes midi out is definitely on the roadmap.

  • I wish I could transpose the user interface of TF onto most other apps, it is so appealing. Very reminiscent of Alchemy - matches up nicely for MIDI learn on MIDI keyboards with the number of sliders and buttons + the xy pad is nice.

I find this app is moody. Maybe it's me. I swear there are times I think it is amazing, other times, I delete it.

I never put my time in on the other FM synth. I have it, just never get into it.

I rarely deviate from my set few synth apps unfortunately anymore. Animoog always, with Model 15 or Synthmaster on back up. Gadgets are also fair game for me.

I need to get out more and see some apps in the neighborhood and bring over a casserole.

  • I just stumble upon this app while searching for new synths in the App Store. Is it as powerful as Phasemaker or FM Essentials? It's a six-operator FM synth as well. Can it load DX7 sysex data?

  • Ah, so this where the FM4 discussion is. ;)

  • Since this thread has already evolved into a general purpose FM synthesis thread, I would be remiss not to give a shout-out to Caustic. More expensive than the other apps previously mentioned, buy puh-lenty of bang for the buck IMO.

  • Meh, Caustic's FM synthesis is three operator only.

I figured your musician's taste would be more discriminating, but it's nice to have options. At these low price points, anyone seriously interested in FM synthesis should own them all.

  • Stroke Machine and SunVox do a pretty decent job with FM too.
Stroke Machine is limited to 2OP FM as is Sunvox but you can chain as many 2OP pairs as needed and trigger them with a 'Multi-Synth' module.

But I'm usually quite lazy so I end up noodling with the Chiang Mai Gadget in Gadget :D

  • @Samu Thank you for the SunVox save. I could feel them getting closer.

With regards to the __Vox I think you are referring only to the built-in FM synth module. You can also build your own using 2 generators and a modulator for each operator. Set the modulator to phase modulation, then you can have as many operators as you have the patience to build. Currently playing with an 8 operator FM synth but I'm not sure extra operators necessarily gives a 'better' sound.
