I'm Not Making Any More DrumPerfect Pro Tutorials

  • Okay, here is my first video. Sorry it took so long, but there were many false starts as I tried to figure out how to do them. This isn't exactly a tutorial, but you might learn a thing or two. Anyway all my DPP videos from now on will be more instructive.

I tried to post this as a separate discussion, but it didn't go up for some reason.

I recently noticed that DrumPerfect Pro has a Facebook page and I saw this:

They are also adding compression in the next update.

  • I recently posted a long rant on this page, which I regret. It came out of a lot of frustration from how difficult it is to make my tutorials.

Essentially I wish that the number one focus for updates would involve making the app easier to use, and less likely to cause users to lose their work.

    This would be very cool.

  • My fourth DrumPerfect Pro tutorial, on "Managing Patterns," is finally up.

Sorry these are taking so long. I don't have the skills of the SoundTest Room guys--I can't improvise my way through these, and I don't have a camera rig. So the way I'm doing them is very labor-intensive. If you listen to it you'll hear my voice changing every few minutes--there was a lot of re-recording. :/

I started doing these because I made a lot of mistakes and lost my work. I did a lot of trial and error and figured some stuff out. I thought I'd share my screw-ups so perhaps others could learn from them. But it seems to me now that the videos are coming out negative. They focus so much on what can go wrong.

If you don't program your own patterns, you probably won't have these problems. If you just use the IAP then it's a non-issue. And maybe you won't have these problems if you're simply more clever or less absent-minded than me. I don't know.

I'm debating whether I should continue. There are only 50 followers to the YouTube channel and they take forever.

  • I personally have found your videos extremely helpful. People dont realize it takes a lot of work and preparation to make these not to mention your own personal time. I think you should not stop if its something you enjoy doing. But, take your time and don't feel pressure to release at any specific time. It'll be ready when it's ready. I been wanting to do some for Midiband and modstep, but I barely have enough time to learn one app at a time. So no matter what, I'm really grateful for all your hard work.

  • Hi Reid,

With the forthcoming DPP update, I headed over to your YouTube channel and watched all four tutorials. If it's any encouragement for you to continue, I just want to say the four you've done already are excellent. I realize they're labor-intensive to produce, so I understand if you decide not to continue, but I can assure you I'll be watching if you do.

Thanks for what you've already put together!

  • 52 followers! Hope you continue the series of tutorials!

  • Me too! Keep them coming.

  • Would love a midi tutorial on how to drive DPP with external midi clips from Cubasis or another daw. Like how to setup for correct GM playback.

  • I'm sorry to say I'm not going to make any more tutorials. One reason is that I was spending all my free time making the tutorials rather than playing music. The second is that I stopped using DrumPerfect Pro altogether because I've been combining iOS and PC for my music lately. I use EZDrummer for programming and Addictive for sounds these days. I just find it easier and faster and I'm content with the results.

DPP is a great app, and it looks like it's getting even better with the upcoming update. I do hope that Gilbert will address some of the issues that I raised in my videos and with him directly, regarding ease of use.

  • Thank you for the tutorials you already released, @reid. I myself think that the biggest challenge for the DPP developers is to improve usability. File management, for instance, so we can import MIDI and organize the files in a friendly GUI such as Superior Drummer's. Or MIDI mapping: we really don't need another propriatery mapping scheme. As for sound quality, I've been consistently getting more favorable reactions from my friends and costumers to tracks made with DPP rather than EZDrummer, which was quite a surprise for me.

Speaking to you from the future, I'd like to thank you for making those videos. They are the only thing that made it possible to get something done in DPP. Of course it was pretty tragic when you mentioned your next video, in what was to be your last video. I've watched them all several times, and ideally the developers would have commissioned you to make official instructional videos, as you did a great job, and better than the official ones.

Hopefully I'll manage to do some more of the learning myself, though I find the manual and the quick start to be hard work. Perhaps it's a second language issue.
