Fugue Machine: Suggestions/Ideas

edited November 2016 in General App Discussion

I <3 this app: It would be supercrazy, if Fugue Machine would get a color picker (the playhead's colors) which would allow the playheads just to play the notes with their assigned color, meaning red plays red notes, but doesnt play orange, yellow, etc. Grey would remain global, as is, played by all playheads, but having even more colours (8?) for example: Yellow + Blue = Green > notes are played by the yellow and blue playhead etc. would be amazing! Separating and combining elements could be an exponential gamechanger, in my opinion. One way to get what I intend to, is to print out the MIDI data in Cubasis, add/delete notes and phrases, recombine them etc.

Ps.: Writing MIDI notes via apps/physical keyboard or MIDI import would be great, too.

I think it needs some easier manipulation controls. And/or maybe a performance page?
Don't really like how the knobs function. It is not easy for me to dial something in and then not sure I like the change coming only when I release finger.
Sliders may work better for the app (have to give that idea more thought though).

Would love to use this more, I think I just found it too limited and again the controls take some fun away.

  • That's the cleanest 'skip these notes' idea for FM I've heard. It's fairly regularly brought up.

Knobs are my biggest frustration point. I want to make exact jumps via some sort of pop-up select list. That would also allow for things like long-press for temporarily switching, reverting on release.

Knobs: Yeah, the knobs are driving me nuts, too. I often can't see the current values, while rotating, because my thumb is covering them :D Of course, from a devs perspective they save space, but in the end they're annoying. The only knobs I really do like, are the ones from Thor. I'd like sliders, with a behaviour like you mentioned, too.

Manipulation: And I don't know how often I delete notes by accident, the editor is very raw, to be honest. That's another rough one, when you get really busy with realtime manipulation. Sometimes handy, sometimes a downer. The loop region "bracket" is resizing towards the direction you slide it, would be cool if it stays rigid.

More than often it's annoying while jamming live, but the behaviour might be important to Alexander's performances. Sometimes it's coming in handy, but in most situations it's killing desired region loop jumps. Maybe sliding it with two fingers or using the upper left option key, might be an option?

I hope more people will come up with suggestions and ideas to extend FM and refine the issues. FM is already an incredible app and I hope this thread helps Alexander in his development.

  • Jay, you might not get a lot of feedback here as a lot as been covered in previous FugueMachine love+hope threads.

Still, I hope @Alexandernaut sees and likes your multi-colored notes suggestion!

    Noted :]

I've already written to him, a while ago...HEY, there you are! :D Awesome, thanks a lot for showing up and you're reply, Alexander!!! :-)

Btw.: Just thought about the knobs again, and if you map them to hardware knobs, they're actually makin' totally sense. I'm about to purchase nanokey studio, since I don't have a midi controller atm., makes stuff easier.

Well 2 little things would be,
    1. A single outline around the stop, play and note icon at bottom when selected, in the color of the selected playhead to distinguish a bit easier. Currently is just the note icon highlighted. (Small thing but improvement I think)
    2. Have the global play button retrigger more immediately if tapped and if held then have it repeat at a rate adjusted by sliding finger up/down while held (like 1/8, 1/16, 1/16t, 1/32). I'm imagining a little bar fading in on screen showing repeat values.
Perhaps the individual playhead play buttons could work like this too.

Oh and another small thing. If the notes displayed in the sequencer could be enlarged to fill the rectangle it would make it easier to see.

  • I love the controls in addictive synth. They feel nice and sticky.

Even with hardware counterparts, still think they're weird for FM. Clock changes aren't the sort of thing you want to scroll/scale through like, say, a cutoff frequency. If you're changing them in real time for musical effect, going through dotted 1/2 notes (etc) when you really want to jump directly from 1/4 to 2x can kill the groove/timing.

  • I'd love for the main setting controls to be more accessible, rather than having to drill down each time I want to make a change.

  • It would be the greatest thing mankind has even known if it had a fully featured arpeggiator built-in. I nearly always use it with Cream, it would be nice to cut out the middle-man.

  • did i miss it?
is it possible to MIDI learn fugue?
could you trigger the play/stop buttons?
    how?

@Redo1, syrupcore, Nkersov: Totally agree with you guys!

    +1 on midi-learn

  • +1: Yep, midi learn would be a nice one. Nevertheless, touch tech has to be convenient too, for users who like to work without hardware, think this applies to almost any app today.

  • iPhone suppport please!
