Questions about LaunchControl XL

@Launchpadforios

I received my LaunchControl XL yesterday and have a couple of questions about its use, thought I'd ask the questions here cause I'm sure others will have the same questions.

In the getting started guide it says that if using the LaunchControl with an iPad you need to put it into low power mode. Is this only the case if powering the unit directly from ipad ? If I am using powered hub for instance, should I leave it in Normal power mode (which I did and it works) ? If I put it in low power mode would I then need to switch back to full power mode if connecting back to powered hub or PC ?

Is it possible when using LaunchControl and Launchpad app to have the app ignore the LaunchControl XL if I want to use the LaunchControl XL with something else, circuit for instance ? Same question for Launchpad as well ?

When using the LaunchControl XL with Launchpad app, would it be possible to map the unused rotaries to any of the performance effect parameters ?

Thanks in advance :)

P.S. I lost 5 hours of my life last night thanks to you guys, Circuit. Launchpad , LaunchControl XL and Launchpad app all running together, you are very BAD people for making all this stuff. And I love you for it <3

On a train at moment and this just had me chuckling out loud in public.

Came here to view thread about Launch Control XL, got one on the way. Did you find answers to your question? I'm interested in that answer too, thanks :)

    LOL..I'd forgotten about this :D

I figured some of it out...

Power mode - I have just left it in full power mode as I am always connected to a powered hub when using the LC XL as I have LP and Audio interface and now Circuit all connected at the same time.

I have been able to use the LaunchControl XL to control the circuit by using the Circuit templates....I haven't tried to use it with anything else, I guess from this that when in the default template LCXL will control the LP app, and you need a different template in order to control something else.....You need to use the PC Editor in order to add templates or create them for the LC XL
I have not been able to map the unused rotaries to FX parameters,

With regard to LP, I have not been able to get the LP APP to ignore the LP Hardware......since my initial question on this I haven't really tried to.

    Hope this helps :)

Oh, and No, I never found a dinosaur rescue centre near me !

  • I have a Launch control XL. My main annoyance is I can't get Launchpad to recognise it when attached to a hub on my iConnectAudio4 . Ableton Live on my laptop recognises it however on the same hub but not iOS. Other than that it's great as a midi controller. If you have Live you should try the Max for Live sequencer for the XL which is great fun too.

  • I've never had to use low-power mode w/ the CCK, fwiw. @Carnbot I love the XL Sequencer too. The XXL Script + PrEditor Script make it the "best" control surface for me. I actually wrote like a 7000 word review of all the features and haven't published it because I was trying to figure "more" out... maybe I should just put it out and complete it later

Usb Id handshake has the blame. Meanwhile usb hub seems transparent to iOS, iConnectivity devices seems not. It will require some tweakings at firmware level or ask novation developers to open the midi control for third party controllers and apps (due it's how maybe iOS detects your launch devices through iConnectivity...)

I will love midi implementation but it seems difficult to me due their business model. ITOH I'm looking to launchkeys with mellow eyes (0 ^ 0)

I don't have the iconnect - have you tried using the Network session on Mac? In theory if the ipad and Lcxl are on the network session they should pick up midi from the IAC driver bus.

I did contact Novation and they recommended firmware update but it didn't help. but yeah probably something between Iconnectivity, Novation and Apple to resolve.

I have a PC and haven't tried it over wifi only through the iconnect. Might be worth a try. It's great as a midi controller as is though and it's only the launchpad app that i'm having a problem with. Probably would use launchpad app more if I got it to work though :)

There's a lot of work gone into that, nicely done....it would be really good if we could do as much with this controller on iOS as you can in Ableton.

@AndyPlankton No doubt... I am working to shim the desktop editor to an iOS app. I think it would be really slick to have the Editor as an Au that you could load up within the app(s) you want to map, be able to save presets etc etc... course this is a learning exercise for me cuz iOS isn't my baileywick.

  • Thanks for doing that! I look forward to having a few free moments to read it. I have the XL sitting next to a Launchpad Pro, and it is a killer combo!

Right on, love using the LP Pro to play sounds, other hand on the LCXL to modulate, then get the happy sounds sequencing through the BeatStep Pro... probably my most used workflow.

  • Oh yeah, fwiw, the Isotonik XXL script + PrEditor from Isotonik are indispensable to me. Isotonik is having 1 day sale tmw... 20% off any purchase over $20... of course, their LCXL step sequencer is also great.

  • I have the XL sitting next to a Launchpad Pro, and it is a killer combo!

Aha! @Crawlingwind you have my dream setup! So does the launchpad app allow you to use the Launchcontrol XL to control fx/filter/volume and the Launchpad Pro to trigger the pads at the same time? I have the Launchpad Pro now, and would like to pick up the Launchcontrol XL if they work well together. I imagine they work well with Ableton too. So what all do you like/dislike about this combo?

  • To be honest, have only used with Live, no iOS action yet. In Live, they are the perfect pair. Nothing to dislike, it is a dream set up for me also. Looks rad too! I have purchased some of the Isotonik scripts, and hope to spend some time this winter exploring. Btw, I got both of them used from Guitar Center in perfect shape for very reasonable prices.

I have the Launchpad Pro now, and would like to pick up the Launchcontrol XL if they work well together. I imagine they work well with Ableton too. So what all do you like/dislike about this combo?

I mentioned my most common workflow above. One thing I'll mention, I would have been unhappy if I hadn't gone in for it knowing about the xxl script from Isotonik. It's a native control surface for Live, and if your a fan of that workflow, it's solid. For me though, only having access to the 1st 8 parameters of an Live device, doesn't work for me. The other two rows of knobs are mapped to track sends, sliders to volume. I wanted to be able to use all 24 knobs on device parameters, and I wanted them auto-mapped i.e. same "blue-hand" control as a native control surface, but with 24 parameters, instead of 8. I also wanted to be able to modify default mappings, and have dynamic presets (i.e. not create 1500 maps for Synthmaster's presets, then when I change them, have to save a preset anew, with a new name...add a device, change a macro... make any change, same deal - this is default Live behavior for preset management. XXL Script + PrEditor does the trick - and I learned along the way how to extend the Community Mapping of Live to 128 parameters w/ the options.txt file - with the 2 scrips in place, I get the first 128 parameters of a live device (or multiple devices) auto-mapped to 6 banks of 24 on the LCXL. (128 parameters being max Live allows). I can remap the order of the device parameters, add new devices, put spaces between mapped parameters, create new banks, reorder banks, copy to new banks etc etc.

Lastly, for me, is the PPTC script by Hollyhook, a dev team that joined Isotonik just a few months ago. PPTC (Performance and Production Tool Chain) is a killer preset management tool, and enables going totally meta-modular w/ Live. When I'm noodling on synths, I often get into a groove where I'm getting a string of good sounds, rather than recording the whole string.... with PPTC you toggle a button, and the entire device chain is saved parametrically into a preset bank (each bank can have 16 presets). This way I can click off cool sounds, and be able to recall them exactly from the moments they occurred. That's the production side of PPTC... then there's performance, you can take your preset banks and modulate and morph them against one another. You can swap out devices between presets, and much more. All PPTC stuff is LaunchPad compatible... so you can trigger any preset at push of button - there's a nifty tool, for example, called SongSwitch that resets all the Presets to their default parameter mappings, which comes in handy in a variety of workflows. I use this workflow for processor management as well. Banks of Preset mixing/mastering chains, for example - only the triggered preset consumes processor power - but everything is trigger-ready.

So, if all the above makes sense... guess it reflects my interest in exploring the "live" aspect of Ableton - software as a fully dynamic, parametric, modular instrument. On the lower-level LCXL piece, gives me about as much control over Live possible with a Control Surface, with the LP Pro as trigger, and instrument.

As for iOS, there's the CCK route, but I use the USB from the LP Pro/LCXL into the Mac, along w/ the lightning to usb from the iPad. To create iOS mappings I use the desktop LCXL editor, which, coupled w/ my iPad enabled on the Network Session, and an IAC Driver bus, apps and LCXL can see each other, and I can midi-learn parameters, save presets on the desktop, and recall that way. Unfortunately, my understanding is there's no way for an iOS app to provide its parameter tree to a control surface - so it could auto-map the app's midi-learnable parameters, like it does w/ Live. I'm quite obsessed w/ overcoming this limitation - cuz I think it would have some good positive externalities for end-users on either Os, and marry the two workflows. I want to be able to "Save As" a Live set from triqtraq or whatever, with all the mappings in place for OS X workflow, or vice versa.

Because I do more sound design on iOS, I mostly use the LP Pro for playing iOS Synths, extending the note range w/out having to slide the keyboard around, for the velocity sensitivity etc. (though the LCXL can send note or CC on its 16 bottom buttons, so I sometimes use those. I guess just to finish off, I use the BeatStep Pro to sequence sounds, and randomize them, I use the Circuit for sound design, but also is my go-to for getting some beats going quickly to go along with the other sounds. Lastly, using the BCR2000 for its Sysex, program change and the like capabilities, but also in combo with the LCXL for dj'ing with the 2 as decks.

Well this was fun to write

Wow, that took a few reads :) I am no Live expert, and am trying not to get ahead of myself too much. I have LaunchSyc and XXL scripts. Of the two you mention, I am considering PReditor to work with XXL. The PPTC might be best for me when I know the program better. I might just stick with XXL until I get more comfortable with it, but we all love a sale don't we?

Edit - bought PrEditor. Got some learning to do!

Yeah, there's some chicken/egg between Live & scripts - I usually end up figuring out that stuff when I get stuck on something and am forced to forage and fumble... cripes, three eff's in a row there... been on a turkey, wine, app bender, even read some Parmenides tonight, clearly approaching "not fit for public consumption" levels. Anyhoo, I look at workflow as "practicing the instrument" somewhere along the line you learn to build and play it.

Always forget about Launchsync, installed that at the beginning and it's just always there.

  • Wow is right, LOL! I'm hoping to get into Ableton, but for now I'm just IOS based. Thank you for the glimpse into the future, hahaha. Food for thought...

Tempted by the xl script but wish they were all iOS prices since there are a few others I want to get like Follow. Wondering if the Bcr script is better than the xl... I sometimes prefer the Bcr knobs over xl knobs for performance since they are wider apart and also should update the current state etc.
Also do you know if you can still keep your own user banks on the xl if you use the script? I imagine so.

I use the BCRXL script too, it's a bit apples/oranges - different workflows, same x-tension of functionality... for example, BCR has 32 auto-mapped parameters cuz of it's 32 knobs.

Yep, you can keep user banks. XXL script resides on User Mode 6, so if you had any important mappings there you'd just need to move them to another.

That's another reason I wanted the BCR, lit knobs, and the push values on the top 8, and the foot pedal inputs... really want an FCB1010 - but got more learning to do before.
