Imashine in modstep
Just tried using imashine 2 in modstep, although i camt send it midi, it responds to global start and keeps in sync with link, so it might be useful, then you might as well use outside modstep to.... but if you use it as a iaa track in modstep you get control over volume in modstep

C'mon NI get with the MIDI already
I wouldn't hold your breath for an update from NI.
They have let a lot of their developers leave and not replaced them, their desktop offerings are now mainly expansion packs and Reaktor add ons, and they have ignored the full version of Maschine for years (Their words, go check the forum)
IMaschine is maybe not their priority, but Maschine is working smoothly right now and they just went out of a big sale with nearly all their product with a 50% off. Not so bad, I believe their is still great things to expect.
Sales show nothing, well in terms of companies going bust they are quite common before the final collapse (Not what is happening here by the way, NI are very strong financially)
Maschine is not working smoothly at all, maybe you are not a power user, but it is full of bugs, all reported since day one of v2 release, confirmed by NI and never fixed, NI have since confirmed that they actually ignored Maschine development for at least two years (Go read letter to the community in their forum) and said that they where back on track and they would communicate and blah blah blah, all of that turned out to be just more hype before the release of new (And uneeded) hardware, that is basically a dongle for previous owners, if you want the features that the new budget hardware offers, you need to buy the hardware dongle that is Jam.
And now the community is turning against them again, because the promised updates have not appeared (Even the features promised to Jam purchasers, yep they sold an unfinished product that is still not finished) the only people they are accepting on their "Open" beta are yes men that have never ever found a bug or even used one of their own samples, and now to rub it all in, they are dropping a 2.5.5 release, and the only thing it has is some inconsequential bug fixes (Non of the day one biggies, like for instance, MIDI out not working on Windows, seriously, go check) and Ableton Link.
So no, Maschine is not working smoothly.
But hey, their expansion department is working at blistering pace hahaha
