Now, I don't know in depth about the AUx spec, or what is truly possible with it. I know however that my experience is that for my uses, it is way more stable and convenient than using stand alone or IAA apps.

I am talking about the more simple 'analog' style sequencers.

This has me thinking how much I would love an AUx sequencer to have in my AUM setup. Yes I can get around it's need, but it's so much easier to just open an AUx within AUM while playing. That with the fact that I've rarely had any issues with AUxs bringing my setup crashing down.

What do you peeps think? Would anyone else see a use for an AUx sequencer?

Try Modstep can do the thing you want

  • Would love to see a tonestack au. Was dreaming of the ability to slot in a single tonestack effect pedal in AUM like echorex. Maybe a way to select tonestack in AUM and then see a list of pedals to select from.

Modstep is kind of its own thing, not really giving me the ability to add sequencing inside of AUM. Yes it is very similar to what I would want to do with AUM and an AUx sequencer, but it is more of an alternative to those. My albeit brief experiences with Modstep have not been one of reliability. Changing musical 'sets' in my current AudioBus / AUM / Gadget setup using mainly AUx apps in AUM has been pretty rock solid. I have not found that so in Modstep so far.

  • I'd be more interested in CV through AU than midi.

Thx for your explanation. Maybe Infinite Looper would also be an option. Must saw however that I have no experience with that program.

Oh, and if you're encoding other data such as midi onto audio (obviously going into ultrasonic frequency carriers rather than down to DC for conceptually simpler control voltages) then here's a thing: https://www.anfractuosity.com/projects/ultrasound-via-a-laptop/

@brambos - I imagine you'd be familiar with this sort of thing too

  • I have no idea what you guys are talking 'bout...but I'm excited anyway.

  • FSK - frequency shift keying. It's how we used to save stuff to cassette and back again.

I could even do it with coded light ;)

  • I know that @JohannesD was thinking about making mid effects that could work with AB3, so there may be new options on the horizon.

Sure it is its own thing (in more ways than one). But, used as a companion to AB and AUM, as just a sequencer, not hosting any instruments itself, it becomes just an "add-on sequencer" to an existing environment. I don't generally host anything inside ModStep, or use it's internal instruments. I just load it in AB or AUM, muting the output, then use it as the master sequencer for everything. Between it's own MIDI capabilities and AUM's MIDI routing It works great, and has always been stable if not hosting anything itself. Loading it into AB or AUM isn't strictly necessary, but makes app switching easier.

I like having all MIDI automation in one place so I can have the overview. I don't think I'd like having to remember which AU instance to go to if I want to adjust something. The other good thing about having a separate master sequencer is it can be moved to a separate device, even a low powered one, to offload processing and to reduce flipping around between apps.

Hmmm. That's an interesting idea I've not thought about. Thanks, I will give that a try out :)

  • Hint: Choose "AUM" and pick a MIDI channel as the output in ModStep. In AUM, set up each channel to recieive from "AUM Destination", then filter out all the channels but the one you need (all should be greyed out except the one you want). Anything goes though. Nothing stopping you from routing one channel in MidiStep to multiple Viking Synths for massive layering. ;)

It's better in audiobus anyway. I put it in its own lane with no output. But I still recommend routing midi to AUM for its routing and filtering goodness.

[edit] That is, if the apps and FX you want to automate are in AUM.

Yep that's the plan. Not inspiring confidence so far. I've had to restart my iPad 3 times to get modstep to even load into AudioBus!

All my fingers are crossed on this one. AB->AUM is my goto setup at the moment. State saving and app switching + flexible routing and built-in filter goodies for the win. If good, not to mention fun, MIDI processing gets integrated into that setup I'll be happy clam.

Tricky, if no one does something nothing happens.
If you do something apple will make it's next move.

Thinking about it, do mac AUs output Midi?
Im not sure but iirc only VSTs do?

    Talking about apples next move,
    Hello link implementation?

Hm, hosts are a weak link on iOS
    Aum and ab are ok
The rest doesn't match my taste or workflow.
I guess that's part of why AUs drip slowly.
Everybodys thinking yeah let THE host come then we'll see?

Hm, there isn't any Au host automation now?
    That's very interesting and sad.
Doesn't make the Au & Host thing very attractive, does it?
So they just send a bunch of notes and get the audio back and that's it?

You dont actually need to load it into anything (unless you want an icon to app switch with), if you are using it just as a sequencer with no midi then you can load it as a stand alone app, and then use link for the sync.
Only reason to load inside AB/AUM is if you want to be able to use IAA sync.

No it was just to be able to switch quickly. I've given up on it though. It's just not gelling with the set up reliably. The whole thing with the AB / AUM / Gadget setup is that it seems pretty solid as far as reliability goes. Yeah Modstep will do the job, but already had problems setting it up, so it's out for now.

I don't have any problems using AUM/Gadget/Modstep all together at the same time. I will very often have AUM loaded with Gadget, some AUv3 and a Line In for Circuit, and then have ModStep sequencing AU's in AUM as well as Gadget and even circuit too.

Yeah definitely not my experience. Many attempts. Many iPad restarts. Many problems. But that's just the way computers are. Some setups will work reliably for one person and not another. It could be something as picky as what order things are loaded. The main crux though is using Modstep takes me from a setup that I've had no issues with to one I have and it's just not worth that hassle :)

One thing to check is the MIDI routing in ModStep, don't just send everything to everywhere as you will get MIDI routed to AUv3 through AUM as well as directly from ModStep. It is quite easy to end up with a midi loop using ModStep and AUM together.

Nope it's the initial setup I'm not happy with for the most part. Sometimes it loads quite happily into AB and other times it won't. Without it, I have a preset in AB, press and loads AUM and Gadget no problems. Add Modstep to the equation and it's random if it loads or not.

  • AB constantly reports Modstep as sleeping, although when I tap to launch, it's definitely running, and sending midi to Viking(s) in AUM. Because Modstep is seen as sleeping, AB can't Save its state. Don't know if it AB or Modstep

It turns out (after doublechecking with Apple's CoreAudio engineeers) that an AUv3 plugin can not output MIDI.

So if that is the case, how does AU parameter recording/automation recording work?

It doesn't ;-) Because as far as I know there is no host that implements it at this point in time (hence all my plugins also listen to MIDI CC events mapped to AU parameters with the same address).

Theoretically it should work as follows:

    • the AU Parameter value is exposed to both the host and the plugin; for example a value representing "Cutoff".
    • both put a "listener" onto this value, which will notify you if the other has changed it
    • so if the cutoff knob is twiddled on the plugin, the host will get a notification. conversely, if the host sends a new value to the cutoff parameter the plugin will get a notification to update its state and GUI.
    • that's it! Easy peasy. So it should be fairly easy for hosts to implement parameter automation. My plugins are ready for it ;-)

AUM does MIDI CC -> AU parameter mapping already, but does not include any timeline/sequencing/recording of the parameter data.

Read-only AU params could theoretically be used as control sources for other destinations, to implement sequencers and LFOs etc as AU plugins. But it would not be MIDI, more like control voltage in a modular synth.

But you'd need to come up with a way to encode the signal in an audiostream of any rate.

    @brambos said:
I'd prefer a method that does not involve Fourier transforms to get the data out of the stream, because that would likely introduce latency.

    @brambos said:
...it would allow every plugin to send and receive CV/GATE/SyncPulse data over an audiostream, effectively enabling the AUv3 system to become a huge modular synth.

Would a simple zero-crossing on a basic waveform get the job done?

    (sample_rate / (window_size / zero_crossings)) / 2

No need to encode it. For high-resolution control signals, just pass the values as floating point audio buffers. (Yes, CoreAudio handles DC, there's no built-in high pass filtering taking place). Use multiple channels for multiple signals. For low resolution control (sequencers, etc), read-only AU parameters could be used, but they would be quantized to the buffer cycle period, so would be quite jittery.
