Step sequencer (universal)
So this is prompted by the modstep sale, which i might grab today, but wanted to see if there is a better option for my needs and preferably universal. Started a new thread because it feels disrespectful to do this on the dev's thread.
Anyways i'm great with patterning for drums but am looking for an easy stepstyle sequencer for bass, hook melodies etc. Something that loops and i can create ties and accents ala 303. Would prefer unless versal ao i can create stuff while on the go and then lay them down but not completely important since auria isn't universal.
I like xynthesizr for color and background stuff and maybe i could use it for bass. Haven 't tried it yet.

Have a look at midiSTEPs. But it's not universal I'm afraid
I'd also be interested to hear about this. Specifically if there's any melody/bass able composition apps (piano roll is also possible) that can support alternative time signatures. Auxy and Aleph Looper are brilliant tools, but can only do 4/4 at present.
Xynthesizer, which I hear will be updated in the near future.
Modstep can do alternative time signatures (little clunky at present though). Not universal though.
yeah, i guess i should first give the ones i have a full trial. i do like this app a lot, just haven't tried to do anything other than what i got it for. anybody have good experiences with arpist? i have it and have opened it about twice but haven't taken the time out to learn what it can really do.
midisequencer can do this as well. It is universal, though I personally don't find it much fun on the iPhone.
Xynthesizr linked would be amazing. In fact I'm going to see how it fares with MIDI Link Sync
Auxy will never change, but let @SecretBaseDesign know you want time sig support. I'm trying to get it in there, too. It's like the anti-Auxy.
@SecretBaseDesign knows exactly what he is doing. Have faith.
Hey, it's good to have something to believe in...
you seem to have all the espionage secrets
offtopic, I admit to not being able to come up with ideas for an arrangement, need time to figure the compositional terms of IL, just from a faint instinct, could one map those clips individually or songwise?
+1 for midiSequencer. Little MIDI Machine is nice too, and free to boot but it doesn't support ties. Or 80 other things midiSequencer does. Both are universal.
would midisequencer be better for this than modstep? does modstep do ties? i just looked midisequencer up and i had seen it but was frankly turned off by the gui.
update, just downloaded midisequencerlite to try out.
I was the same and only recently (2 weeks ago) got it. Got the IAPS too. I'm really quite impressed. Despite the GUI. Very competent app. Awesome dev too, who listens, carefully, to wishes.
thanks, are the ties an iap purchase?, at work so only glanced at it but don't see it.
Unless I'm missing something I don't think it does them. The IAP's are for "Chords and added Notes" and "Midi FX".
Someone more clever (and driven) than I might be able to cox it into doing odd signatures though, by turning on/off notes and adjusting tempo etc (it goes up to 1020 in tempo) I guess. I haven't needed, so I haven't tried and I can't see it (busy putting kids to bed myself here).
It does, it just doesn't call them ties. You have to set a given step's length to >100% (where 100%=a full step's worth of time). It's a little tricky in that if you set a step to, say 180% and the following step to 65% you'll never here the 65% step. Also, you have to set the targeted synth to play in Legato mode and set the glide amount to something that sounds right to you. I imagine there are recipes out there if you're looking to emulate the 303 tie/glide.
For odd time signatures, yes, you just have adjust the sequence length to make the math work (14 steps for 7/8, etc). Use the [ and ] buttons to set the start and end of the sequence.
It should probably always be said when we talk about this app: Tony very much built it to be played live. It's not a cubasis or modstep alternative. It's a different kind of sequencer all together. But:
Very that. Accents are just the velocity layer.
Can't you do ties just by varying the length of individual steps?
Just checked. You can do this, with a little less control, in Xynthesizer as well. In the synth area (pull up from bottom) go to sequencer and set Tie Notes to on. It will tie same notes together into one. If you have two notes playing simultaneously it seems to send the lower one first so it will bend up to the higher note from the lower (presuming your synth is setup for mono legato with glide). If you have a set of three of the same notes and then add a lower note to the last step of the three, it will bend down to that one.
Bit of a sidebar but wow. I just had a play with "Note Time Mode" in midiSequencer. After reading about it in the manual, it makes way more sense is actually quite amazing. Look for "What is Time?" toward the bottom of page 18 here: http://www.amssoftware.org/manual/midiSequencerManual.pdf
Higher Learning^
MidiSequencer update Jan 2017 will bring 6 racks for sequencing with independent options for transpose, start, end, tempo div and loop options. No more IAP's,audiobus 3 ready as well.Check out Dev's Facebook for more info.
Thanks man! I just logged on to say that i tried it myself. It's implemented a bit wierd but i also like that the tie on and off is universal so you can go back and forth and find happy accidents. Also the fully variable velocities make for nice tweaking. Also adding the custom random box to maybe one higher note will keep it from getting stale.
Anyways, i don't need to look further for my current needs. All i really want to sequence are drums (and patterning rocks) and rubbery bass/melody lines. Everything else i play in.
Well. After much practice and all good with the internal sounds i fired up model 15 and then ODYSSEi and velocity levels don't get sent with note. So still looking
From Xythesizer? I had it sending velocity just fine to NLOG when I was testing it earlier. In Model 15, make sure you have the "Controller Outputs->Velocity" jacks connected to something in order to hear it.
Oh cool. Didn't even think about checking that. Thanks
And in Odyssei there is a velocity-VCA slider (and switch). Make sure that is set correctly so that velocity determines volume of notes.
Cool. Had a go with fabfilter twin and got it working. Main issue with ios is jumping around and half learning so many things
