Yeah. Even with Audiobus state saving, this remains a complete pain in the ass. All in one apps are good at saving it all but then, as you mentioned, you lose a lot of sonic wiggle room.
So far, short of just using Cubasis for as much as possible, I'm finding that hosting everything within AudioBus, only using apps that support state saving and piping that to AUM is the most "recallable" route.
I agree and mostly end up creating audio tracks soon as possible, unless it's AU. This prevents a lot of headaches next time you try to reload your project.
Yah i tend to record audio pretty much right away on iOS. One thing I do is also number tracks and presets to accompany them. So in Blocs wave I have #066 and if I was using gadget at the same time there is a #066 there and if I used Shoom patches they are saved with a #066 prefix etc etc. Aside from that, welcome to iOS!

Commit to audio as soon as possible. Using AUM helps with this, as does the realization that you are ultimately creating sounds, not writing a composition.
Yeah, committing to audio is a necessity but I often work further into a tune and then say, "Gah, I wish it had a bit more mid-range or more attack". Then the question becomes whether it's worth the effort to recreate something. First world problems.
@syrupcore : In mentioning " using Cubasis as much as possible"..Can't Auria Pro (state) save also? Or am I guessing correctly that you mentioned Cubasis more so in that it has a built in compliment of usable Midi-instruments , perhaps integrated differently than say Auia's Lyra?
So if that question was a bit convoluted, why then Cubasis bs Auria Pro?
@Telstar5 yeah, really just a placeholder for "big DAW with MIDI and AU support." Neither of them support AB state saving.
AUM does support state saving though. I'm not sure but I think at one point anyway that didn't include the state of any loaded AU instruments. That might have been resolved at this point. I generally use it for hosting AB chain outputs or an all AU setup.

Yeah, Program Change, from the 80's remember ? It does that,
you save the name of the sound in the sequencer.
Crazy, right ?
It's like you could load a track exactly as you saved it 40 years ago because of midi standard.
You can even change the sound while playing the sequence !
But yeah, we have state saving, iaa saving ++, save my cloud in the ass app now.
An app with a much more ergonomic way for using program change, that save, AND load within IAA, that would be a cool app...
It would be easy, it's a standard, midi, but 10 synths on the app store are handling that...But what we want on iPad is a virtual mix table, AudioBus...
And also sync with Link, because midi clock for an obscure reason doesn't work here...Now you can start everything, but not stopping everything, or some can, some others can't...Well I'm a bit pissed this morning sorry for the mood...got my coffee now...

Its important to for me to know what each app's capabilities are. Some Audiobus apps of course have State saving, then there's Ableton Link, Remote triggers, and if it's an AUv3. Since I know any AU is going to show up within another app, I can safely categorize them up to what it might do without being hosted. That said, this is my current setup for organization, it's been helping me greatly:
