  • Yes, you need an actual guitar, but this app (and the OS X GarageBand version) meant that I could unscrew the Roland hex pickup that was on my Hohner G3T-LH for the past very long time. I suppose I should sell that Roland GI-10 and pickup now.

  • You can always simply hum into a mike, play a harmonica or other instrument into a mike and it will transform the melody into midi and therefore the instrument of your choice

Yes and perhaps useful this way but how does it track? I have found the tracking to be not as solid when it's tracking anything other than a traditional guitar. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, though...

  • Alas, my only guitar work is virtual, using Geo Shred, Guitarism, iFretless, and others.

EDIT - Uhm, just taken a longer look, and get the strong impression that this app is not what I'd thought. Its primary function is to turn real world guitar playing into midi data. Correct? I'm not even sure if it can work using a virtual app style guitar?

Perhaps when AB is supported you will be able to use Geoshred and MidiGuitar to control ios synths...

  • I've been a bit on the fence about spending the $30 for this. Anybody want to push me over the edge? I've got both an acoustic and an electric to run through this. I haven't been exactly blown away by the tracking through the basic app. I do have a number of synths I'd like to try but just hesitate to spend the money. Have you found the tracking to be any better (or worse) on any particular external synth? The appaholic in me really wants to get this but I've been holding fast.

  • I use an acoustic, and as long as I boost it some with my EP Booster pedal and adjust the tracking, it works wonderfully for me. I love being able to use an instrument I know and can play decently to mess with my synths. Not something I need all the time, but for those moments, I haven't found anything better.

    Thanks for the feedback!

  • Yeah do it. Version 2 is a major upgrade. App is astounding.

I have to apologize for my post. When I asked the question I didn't realize I could actually try all the features without purchasing the iap's. After trying a few different synth and messing with a few settings, I have to agree with most of you. Midi Guitar 2 rocks! Is it perfect? No. Making a few technical changes in the way I play though, I can see loads of potential. The only problem is that I'll probably end up purchasing more synths just to try them out with Midi Guitar. Oh well. First, world peace!

@JamOrigin I would love hear how the promised update for Midi guitar is progressing especially your efforts to make this brilliant App a bit more resource friendly.
Sorry guys full apologies I have just realised the heading of this thread is actually notification of an imminent update, I know how disappointing it is when this occurs and there is no update forthcoming. It was not done intentionally, I simply did a search of Midi guitar and added my query without reading its title properly

  • So I put a set of .11 flatwound strings on my Strat. They are quite stiff even compared to roundwound strings of the same gauge, but I've found the combination of stiffness and a total lack of string noise well suited to the crisp, clean style of playing that works so well with this app. Worth checking out.

  • congrats - if those are d'Addario ECB you won't have to bother about new strings for the next couple of years
my oldest set (on an acoustic .12) is about 4 years old

    cheers, Tom

  • Hmm... Always used a Strat with round wound 9s with midi guitar but I have a jazz archtop with flat 11s on it. Off to play. Thanks!

By golly, I've never noticed significant differences in tracking via string gauge, string brand, flat vs. round, etc. What’s far most important is a really well set up guitar with precise intonation and no fret buzz, a very clean playing technique, and full muting of all sympathetic resonances, ghost notes, non-pitched noise, etc.

I’ve been playing guitar synths since the late 1980’s starting with the Casio PG 380 and I presently use a Roland GR-55, Fishman TriplePlay, Roland VG-99, MIDI Guitar 2, etc.

Vguitarforums.com is by far the best place to learn about high-tech guitar.

YMMV of course and I am definitely a newb when it comes to iOS apps and I appreciate all the kindness and knowhow.

  • I would like to ask for an update with Audiobus 3.0 support. This would make it possible to save routings and other settings with state saving and the new MIDI functionality in AB3. If possible it would also be fantastic if this got turned into an AUv3. Please do consider this, @JamOrigin. Thanks! And the app is awesome!

    Seconded.

  • Sweet Jaysus, I just saw the thread title and got excited.

What have they done? What have they done? Where is my update? Oh ... :/

Sorry about that  . I just had to dig this out because I think there's a better chance for the dev to be alerted.

I agree! I sent an email to the dev a day or two ago asking the same...

Lol - exactly the same thing happened to me when i saw the thread title

  • It looks like they don't get alerted for this thread. So everybody wanting an update for AB3 and AUv3 please let them know through http://www.jamorigin.com/contact/. I already did last year inJanuary. Maybe I should try again too.

  • Response to my e-mail:

"Yes, AB and Apples IAA will come in next iOS update. I cant give an ETA though.."

  • Sweet! Got an email today announcing updates of the desktop plugins of Midi Guitar and Midi Bass, the latter finally being out of beta. Haven't tried these yet but I guess there must be some noticeable improvements.
