Sampletank?buy? talk me out of it!!!
so i've been on an app buying spree since i arrived on this forum.
I've bought midi guitar/thumbjam and ifretlessbass. Since sampletank is halfpriced..i'm seriously thinking about it but does it have better/more real sounds than what thumbjam and ifretlass bass? does sampletank offer anything that i don't already have w/thumbjam?
Comments
To begin with, how much memory space have you got left on your device? Sampletank takes up an awful lot!
I purchased ST while it was at quarter price at one time, and the samples are good, but nothing beats the samples in TJ or iFretless Bass to be honest...except perhaps a real bass, a good one played by a good player.
Instead of SampleTank I would get bs-16i. SampleTank has a lot of sounds, good ones. ThumbJam has better. But with BS-16i you can grab all kinds of sound fonts to use - many specialized and more variety. Many free. Many better than SampleTank.
But for bass sounds. TJ, iFretless or a real bass.
If I had to put the sounds in Thumbjam in a cage-match fight to the death with Sampletank, who would I pick for most realistic sounds? Sampletank has a standard keyboard versus Thumbjam's one of a kind interface. Both have great samples, great controls to tweak the samples, and lots of diversity of sample types. I personally LOVE the sounds in Sampletank, use them a lot, and HATE the infamous Pop-ups to buy stuff that occur(ed) when I'm using that app. The correct recommendation is buy both, Sampletank's sounds are worth it at half price. It's a good app, but I'll say it again, Thumbjam is the absolute best in the world! Cage-match? THUMBJAM
.
Those were the beginning...I also bought Cubasis, guitarism etc...this week alone.
.
Follow wayni's advice and get BS16i instead - the sounds are just as good (or maybe even better) and you can find a lot of free soundfonts on the internet to add additional samples.
SampleTank is a great app, but once you factor in all the in-app purchases it can get quite expensive.
Yes, +1 for BS-16i, I own both, I found out the original string sound in SampleTank not so nice unless you go for the in-app purchase the rest of the string sound. So BS-16i is the cheapest way to do this...
Edit: You need to load soundfont in BS-16i, If you need the orchestra string here is the thread we discuss about Sonatina Orchestra Soundfont.

and other soundfont in this thread

the bad news is, a lot of these old soundfonts are huge: Smpletank size! And no IAA yet (you can argue if that matters). But it's possible to get all 16 midi channels playing different sounds at once, if you've the time!
Stop dithering and buy it and all the inn app purchases !
It's great if a little expensive comparitively speaking...and has some great features
What's bs16i? Does it have good bass guitar sounds?
It has whatever sounds you can find in .sf2 format to load into it.
and it seems very low on CPU usage compared to some
Keep watching...every Chritstmas bs-16i has lowered in price.
Sampletank is great but if you are planning to use it with Audiobus, know that it isn't working properly at the moment. http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/2646/sampletank-or-audiobus-issue#Item_1

For all your guitar soundfont needs.
Almost 50% off

Sampletank has the IAP SampleMoog, which is worth the money if you want classic Moog sounds. And the sounds you start with are better than bs-16i. You might wait for when the IAPs go on sale, it happens sometimes.
I have had SampleTank since the beginning, but I rarely use it (especially when one reads all the dissenting commentary on this forum); still, there's a nice selection of drum styles. I can see using it in the future...
I like it a lot. I like using it with ThumbJam.

Ha ha, happy waiting!
Sampletank has helped me pick up a few paying freelancing music gigs. I have a tendency to use it while waiting at the doctors, dentists, oil change... and I create various pieces (and I own ALL of the extras...). Then I send these "samples from Sampletank" to my Mac, master them with T-Racks, show the client what I can do... and they hire me. So Sampletank has paid for itself.
That's awesome @ShawnLeonhardt! Tell me, what makes SampleTank better than bs-16i or MusicStudio? In your opinion.
I'm just curious
Probably just the fact that he's using it.
@tgig Sampletank comes out of the box with a larger collection of nice samples and makes it really easy to get more. Plus the mini multi track recorder thing.
Plus, it also looks a lot nicer than bs-16i and I don't care what people say, that shit matters. If you're at the store to buy a toaster and two models have the same features at the same price, who wouldn't pick the nicer looking one? (The two apps in question do not have the same features but they are both multi timbal sample playback apps).
I never ever use sampletank but it's good at what it does. That said, unless someone really required the simplicity, Thumbjam can do everything Sampletank can (except the super simple access to a very broad library of samples) and about 100 other things.
I find the Sampletank UI cluttered and prefer bs-16i's simpler approach. Different tastes, I guess.
Also, with Sampletank, you're forever tied to whatever sound packs IK choose to make available at a price of their choosing, whereas with bs-16i, if you can find it, convert it or create it, you can load whatever soundfont you like.
Buy Sampletank. Buy bs-16i. Buy what you think you want. To be honest, you'll never get a definitive answer to these type of questions as subjectivity will reign supreme. Personally, I buy what works or suits my workflow irrespective of user comments. Some people love UIs, some love twangy effects, some love flexibility even if sounds are crappy, some love lo-fi sounds and so on. I have Sampletank on iOS and on the Mac where it comes with a whopping 43GB of stunning sounds (recent deal of £89). I also have bs-16i and you can use it with tons of soundfonts. Buy what you like.
Not forgetting the possibility of converting sounds from the PC or Mac versions of Sampletank into soundfonts and transferring them to your iDevice...
Did anyone notice they have a free version?

Try before you buy!
That's that sorted then
