Need Help with ReSlice

Ok, so I bought VirSyn ReSlice because I love sample chopping/tweaking and the perspective of having an AU sampler was so tempting...

Right now, there are 2 things I cannot figure how to do (may be it's just not possible) which makes the app completely unusable on my side... So if you could help me and provide feedback and/or clarifications, I would be very thankful ;-)

(1) Is it possible to have exclusive sample playing / choke groups... i.e. have a slice stop playing when you start playng it again and/or have a slice stop playing when you start playing another slice ?
And if yes how ?
(that really my beggest issue with the app right now, I don't get the point of chopping a sample if you cannot do choke groups...).

(2) Is it possible to have the app cut a sample in a given number of slices of the same duration instead of relying on transcient detection (even if transcient detection is great, it is not always adapted to chop some melodical loops)... ?

Thanks so much for your answers... If you have solutions for those points, it would make me so happy (I'm dying for years to find a descent yet simple sampler on iOS... And if I can use Reslice in Cubasis while waiting for "the never coming out" BM3, it would be awesome).

  • Long press on Slices will bring up the menu allowing you to chop into 4, 6, 8 ... equal segments.

Not sure about the choking, will look into it.

  • Thanks a lot... Choking is really what would make the app awesome on my side... Without it, it's almost useless on my side

The app does not do choking per se but it does have an arp so you can sequence the slices in a wide variety of ways using 4 tracks each with their own independent sequence which each can be turned on or off. The app is not really like a traditional drum pad with samples that can be loaded onto each pad and assign diffferent pads to choke groups.

I will say you can load in some percussion samples onto slices, create some arps, and either rest and lift your fingers on various pads or send MIDI to the app to create rhythms from your sample slices. In addition since the app is an AU, you could create a setup where each part of the kit was a different instance of ReSlice loaded with a different part of the kit (e.g. one instance could be a range of snare hits). You could then send MIDI to each instance to get all sorts of rhythms going. By a combination of arps and instances you could achieve the equivalence of choke but it might be a lot more work than you'd want to do to setup and another app that more closely aligns with the workflow you have in mind might be more appropriate for you.

  • choke groups would be terrific, as would the ability to easily make a standard drum kit out of the slices...

Thanks for the answer man. The problem is that there is no app allowing my dream workflow on iOS... I tried to find it for years
Choke slices seem so easy to implement on ReSlice... That I feel frustrated it's not there.
But well... I tried to discuss for months with Blocs waves Dev trying reach my dreamed workflow wit no luck lol... So I'm getting used to be frustrated by what seems to be a so small omission which ruins everything on my side.
I feel like being a real cry baby lol

I think choke groups would be useful for many people who'd like to use the app the way you're wanting to. Perhaps contacting VirSyn if you haven't already would be worthwhile.
Maybe a MIDI effect app oriented around drum pads will come out and have the ability to create choke groups with the pads and then be able to control ReSlice and other apps this way.

  • @VirSyn I would love to see choke groups in Reslice also. Thank you!

I'll add my vote, would be super handy.

  • yes @VirSyn , I don't know how to contact you lol... but please please please add choke groups to ReSlice (even a single choke mode where all the slices choking each others would be wonderfull).

  • I've used this form to good effect, usually get an answer within 48 hrs

    Sweet.

  • Does anyone know if ReSlice is essentially a superset of AudioEffx? Looks like all the FXs are included in ReSlice, and since that's an AU too, do you need AudioEffx if you have ReSlice?

  • @VirSyn You almost made me cry with joy dude... That's really an amazing news. I think I'm close to get my dreamed workflow on ipad... So happy

  • I'm still loving ReSlice - brilliant app.

Same here! This one passes the "I still use it regularly after the honeymoon period.". Essential to me.

  • I need to get past the 'happy accidents only' hump but it is pretty sweet so far.

  • Lately I"ve been turning off the ARP in some AU instances and just use it as a straight up sample slicer.

Same here. Quickly parsed out a sample via midi to a new file with 16 equal parts and threw that into Sector. The best thing is that the process can be templated. The music was a fail, but the process a success. Favorite Virsyn app by far.

Yeah me too, sometimes I just trigger the samples manually via the keyboard, or muck about with pitch changes by tapping the wave display.

That hump is my default life operating model, I can highly recommend it, let the universe drive man. ;)

I did for many years... and have the scars to show for it. It's time I took the wheel and showed this universe how it's done! Old Gus is in charge now! Damn right! Whootwhootwhoot! (Chokes on orange/dies)

Reslice doesn't accept audio input as an AU. Also. You cannot insert it in the effect slot. So no. You cannot use it as a replacement for AudioEffx.

Ah, I see, don't have either yet, but was more tempted by ReSlice, but sounds like for FX AudioEffx is the way to go. Thanks for the explanation :)
