Audiobus 3 - Send Midi to external USB-Midi controllers (Beatstep Pro, Korg SQ-1, interface)
One main function of my iPad is to send Midi to USB controllers, which then act as Midi-to-CV converters and control some analog gear.
When using an app like Fugue Machine for example, these controllers pop up as Midi destinations whenever I am connected via USB and am running Studiomux.
Using AB3, the only Midi Destinations are Apps, AU, and my iPhone. Am I missing something? It seems like I should be able to make these same connections with the same app (just, inside of AB3 instead of the app itself).
Comments
Oh and presumably, would like to send Midi in with these controllers at times
I'm using my iPad in the same way, but I haven't tried out AB3 yet. I'm sure I can tell much more in the coming months.
Perhaps I misunderstand, but you should still be able to do this in AB3 by loading your midi sending-apps in the audio section and configuring it as you normally do. The midi section in AB3 is not really made for this use (yet?).
However, you should be available to select Core MIDI controllers as input in the midi section and send to AB3 optimized (<important) apps.
Strange, I can see (and use) my Beatstep Pro with AB3, works like a charm (really run to combine with MIDI effects)
I see all my midi out ports in audiobus. Send midi from my launchpad and to my hardware output ports. Not sure why you cannot see your midi hardware.
could you guys explain your connection details? I've tried again with the ipad and Korg SQ-1 connected directly to computer, studiomux open (and closed), Logic open...
just a quick bump - anyone else having good results or issues with this? Audiobus just shows "refreshing" for me but no midi controllers...
@Sebastian are there any specifics on how to connect USB midi controllers?
No, there are no specifics. Just connect the Midi controller to your device, then launch Audiobus.
My beatstep (not pro) doesn't get started on ext. sync by AB3 when inserted as midi input. Anyone else?
My setup is a Mac running Logic, with the iPad and the midi controller connected directly with USB. With this setup, I get a connection within Fugue Machine when Studiomux is running.
But no connection within Audiobus (with or without Studiomux). So I'm wondering, do I need something else like an iConnect device to host the iPad and controller?
Do you mean the midi controller is connected to the Mac ? That might be why you aren't seeing any midi ports. Audiobus only sees ports connected directly to the idevice. Studiomux doesn't have Audiobus midi support yet. I actually have a similar setup as you do but I use an iconnectivity Ica4+ that actually exposes it's midi ports to Audiobus3. It's one the main reasons I stopped using studiomux actually. That and because studiomux could never get latency as low as the Ica4+ does.
I might just have to buy one of those iCA boxes then... (and I guess I will need the USB host port of the iCA4, which the 2 lacks? Or hopefully, it would all work together with the iCA 2 and controllers connected via USB hub?)
Kind of wanted to avoid the iCA actually... seems like they are struggling to make the thing work. Just my general impression, but maybe I will just go for it anyhow.
Thanks for your replies by the way
Yup. You can connect a USB hub to the host port and have upto 7 midi controllers or midi interfaces shared between the 2 devices. Mind you. It's got a very VERY steep learning curve. But I can honestly not see myself not using one of their devices now. It's pretty much a permanent part of my studio. And atleast for me rewiring virtual midi and audio ports is a breeze now. Can do excellent stuff like sending audio from my daw into Moog model 15 via audiobridge and back with barely any delay
Just one minor warning. If you choose to rename the host midi ports keep in mind iOS devices remember the first names for the ports till you wipe and restore the ios device. So might be a better idea to call them ports 1-7 than individual device names in case you decide to change the plug in order later. It's very jarring to have a port called quneo plugged to a novation launchpad. Just saying lol. I just kept the original names of iconnectivity port 1-7.
And another warning: some people, including myself, have huge issues with AB3 and ICA4+ that have yet to be resolved in an update.
Yeah, I did check out that other thread. In general, this iOS stuff can be pretty wonky (I'm about 6 months into it). It's amazing when it works, but the rest of the time I'm wondering: is my iPad Air1 not powerful enough? Is AB3 still working out bugs? Is it the other app's fault? Is the iCA the problem? It's quite the rabbit hole to go down...
to be fair i actually use it a lot even without IOS. when using my volcas and a desktop and a laptop. so its pretty good even if you don't use IOS at all. here's a strange thing though. it seems windows users are encountering no issues at all. wonder if its something to do with the mac iconfig app.
