On most contemporaneous camera phones the HDR is achieved by shooting several rapid consecutive shots of differing exposures and extrapolating the exposure delta to achieve the perfectly flat 18% grey with edge enhancement of compression artefacts that we know of as HDR. The iPad (and presumably iPhone, never had one) seems to do HDR differently - it takes a single shot, demonstrated by shooting a moving subject in HDR - it doesn't give the double-image ghosting that most other mobile cams with HDR will make you suffer from. That seems good. The downside is, every time I've shot HDR on the iPad, I either can't tell the difference between it and the normal version, or I prefer the normal version.

I prefer it as it 'normalises' the photo - so instead of the bleached out sky vs dark background when taking landscape shots, it brings down the sky white balance so you can see more tone and detail, and lightens the foreground. Useful for my landscape painting work when I'm taking reference pics.

    When it works.

  • I said "F" it and updated my Air 2 to 10.3.1 after hearing of these multi-GB storage gains and figured I was already on 10 anyway, so how bad can a double dot update really screw things up (probably shouldn't ask...)

Went from 2.2 GB free to 4.8 GB after the update, very cool. Haven't noticed if any battery life improvement will also be a bonus.

Either way I don't see going to iOS 11 on a device that shipped on iOS 8. I've explained before how I thought that the OS generation that a new device is released on will probably be it's best performance. I've changed that opinion a bit after the Air 2 played nice with 9 and 10 so well. I don't want to press my luck, but we'll see how the reviews are concerning Air 2's with iOS11...
