Does this work with 3rd party music apps or is it just an Apple apps thing?

Theoretically it works with any app but it's up to the developer to add support. So far there's only a few music apps supporting it. No synth, DAW or instrument supports the feature.

I guess it's only portrait format? if so this would rule out many music apps...
ThumbJam works in both portrait and landscape orientation when using multitask.
Multitasking is worthless holding iPad in portrait. But yes, it works. (Huge iOS software design fail, but whatever)
If you mean the app is always "portrait oriented" yes, that is right. This is the utter fail I'm talking about. iOS multitasking never allows a horizontal line dividing two landscape apps. And yep, it totally excludes the most useful scenarios for music making apps.
