Covers Club - May 2017
What is the Covers Club?
It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their cover versions. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.
The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.
The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.
All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute.
We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material.

@studs1966 I really like what you did with the track. The only constructive thing I would say is that the drums need just a wee bit more punch in your mix. However, this is more or less a question of aesthetics and tastes rather than technical issues given the track is mixed pretty damn well.

So, I know this will be a weird question, but are you the same Bootsy that used to make vst plugins under the name "Variety Of Sound"?
So, here's my submission for this month.
Here's the original track from the 2002 S4!Sash! album.
And, I kid you not when I say I produced most of this track on my iPhone. The DAW I used for compilation was Xewton Music Studio. A majority of sounds were imported from the Leviathan 2 sample pack, from Beathawk, from Poison 202, and from other synths and such too. The trumpet IS from a built-in instrument of XMS. Yes, that is my voice. I recorded it in Xewton, ported it to Hokusai, cleaned it up, and then used the Sparkle Advanced Cross-Synthesis app with a sustained synth sample from Leviathan 2 as a carrier in order to get the vocoded sound. It's not exactly a final mix by any means, but I figured I'd sketch out something quick enough to show off for May. (A different cover for next month!)
Nope different Bootsy. I wouldn't know the first think about developing software unfortunately. A bar patron called me boots one day because I wear black rubber boots at work everyday. Boots was already taken so I went with Bootsy.

My entry for the month, it's a little raw as it's just a live performance captured with a single USB mic, reverb was recorded while tracking (it helps me stay in tune) and was initially just intended as a practice rather than a posting.
The original is a modern classic by Death Cab For Cutie.
A couple of notes (for myself mainly), I always start a little off-key, takes me a couple of lines to find the right pitch, so the first line is a touch sharp - hopefully I can eventually overcome this with practice. Singing is still a little raw, but has improved so much in the last six months that I'm happy with my progress, there's the odd bum note but it's much more consistent than it was a year ago. The guitar playing is always a little scrappy, but just being able to play and sing at the same time is hard enough, again I'm hoping a few more years of practice will allow me to add some refinement to the guitar playing while singing. With another 2 or 3 years of practice (and I practice most days) I'm hoping to be at least half as good as @bootsy

@richardyot, Great song choice. I like the raw stripped down stuff personally. I actually thought the first lines were pretty tight! I really like the tone of your voice, the little break up occasionally feels good!
if I could just say one thing about your pitch, when you sing "illuminate the no's" for example changing pitch on the syllables, just seems to accentuate if the pitch is slightly off. As opposed to a smooth bend into the note or holding the same note. Hope that makes sense. Your "follow you into the dark" is great! I hope that wasn't too harsh of a critique, just my 2 cents fwiw! But I really did enjoy listening to it..

@Bootsy thanks for the crit, and no it's not harsh, I know I drift out of tune now and then! It's better than it was but in the high sections I have a tendency to sing slightly sharp - trying too hard to reach the notes when I should just relax into them. It's practice, and as you noted the tone/timbre of my voice has massively improved recently, and I've also learned to add a bit of vocal fry for expression. The pitch will come, I practice a lot and I'm seeing the benefits. I just need more time with my nose to the grindstone.

I'm new into music making. This is my first cover using ios only apps. I used Rytmik Ultimate and Cubasis.
@richardyot Well, yeah, you may be a little off tune with the singing, but I absolutely dig the timbres of your voice. It's nothing a little autotune can't fix.
VoiceFXRack can do it. So can Multitrack Studio actually (with some actual Melodyne-styled vocals editing). I love the guitar work as well. Great job mate. 
@fattigman Damn, I really like the sounds I hear. It has an arcade meets 80s pop feel to it. If I were to offer up a constructive thought, the vocals are just a little too drowned in reverb. If this was an aesthetic choice to give the track a haunting quality, then it's very well done. If this was not the intention however, just dial back the reverb and nudge the vocals up by 1-2dBs. Either way, it's an enjoyable ride. Cheers.

Novocaine - Eels. Jerusalem - Mum Punk Mix.
By accident when working on this EeIs song, I loaded up a 25 second, covert, ad hoc recording of mum singing the first line of 'Jerusalem,' when she visited last summer. Laced with Pinot, (forgot the words) midnight, in a garden, in Wales, she stirred the locals and I had to press stop. Now, in an attempt to join in with her, and after unsuccessful cutting/shutting to blend our vocals in later on.... it doesn't work. Different keys? (wouldn't know) and failed to clear all the outside clatter from her one line. She knows nothing of this, but I did thank her for the contribution to the England/Wales scuffles the week after she went home. BGT next.
@studs1966 Another topper from the cleaner geezer, again highlighting your vox sample skills. Second nature to you but must take ages sifting through them to find the aces. A slap of summer parties around the ears to enjoy. Not sure what's wrong with them all in Costa today. You got me dancing with my cuppa but only strange looks and no partner to groove with as yet.... Ready for silly season to begin?

@jwmmakerofmusic You are kidding... aren't you? All on an iPhone and in double quick time. Loving this vibe, kinda dark, but not long enough. Luke on the frother got frothed and he's throwing some jug moves. Knew he'd like your stuff. What I like is I can hear the urgency in your vocal delivery, even though there's all this techy stuff on top. I love it. Even a breath coming through. Power in that music/mix and can feel it in my guts. Jess is throwing hers up. What's going on in here today. Looking forward to next months offering of power.
@richardyot Perfect song selection boss. Because you practice so much, find it exciting/inspiring when I get to hear you twice a month and can pick out bits n bobs. I do hope you and Bootsy get together at some point (before August) and think the joy involved in that collaboration could push your vocals on even further. I don't get any scrappy guitar and never have, only strums full of emotion and character. So none of your big mics unpacked yet ..... will you be able to pack away your USB variety though? Would be interesting to hear the comparison, especially on an unplugged song like this. The boss here at Costa would like to say that you sound honest, relevant with a natural, organic tone. I second that. He can review again can Nathan. Nice one and good work.
@Bluepunk thanks for the comments. My mic collection is indeed unpacked, but I must confess I've still been using the USB mic anyway.... It's just so much quicker to set up! Will have to stop being lazy and get the interface/power supply/XLR cables/shock mount/condenser mic contraptions out again.
