Coming Late To The Party

I have a confession. I've only been producing Music for a little over a year, and during this time of great exploration, learning, challenges, confusion and discovery I have learned a lot. I have sought solace and comfort in a few key apps on iOS and macOS, and have shied away from a few during this phase of learning.

So as the chatter increases on the release of this new app and that new app, I've been weighing my consideration about a few apps which I've deliberately avoided (even though I own them). Anyway, one of these apps is BeatMaker 2.

While I love the notion of a BeatMaking app in the vein of an MPC it has always confused me. I've tried my time with iMPCPro (frustration) and BeatHawk (so sweet) and Maschine (wtf is this app?) to name a few...but it wasn't until today that I downloaded BM2 once again to peer into its vast possibilities...and well...DAMN!!!!!!

I now get it.

It all makes sense.

BM2 is just amazing. True the UI is older than dirt and the workflow is a little obtuse at times...but honestly, it's just so dang clear and fun to use.

I guess it took this journey of producing to really understand the underlying flow you can find while composing. I guess I am finding my zen in all of this.

Anyhoo, I just wanted to toss my hat in for BM2 and wanted to say that I am really looking forward to the release of BM3.

Back to poking and noodling and looking for my muse beneath time and timbre. :)

    I'm not going to bite on BM2 this late on the game, but I'm definitely looking forward to exploring BM3 in the future.

    BM2 is great. I might have to download it again and dabble with it a bit. I have kept it off my ipad since Gadget and Blocswave take up most of the space on my 16gb iPad and BM2 has such a large foot print. I try and go back to apps I previously deleted a while ago. Sometimes over the course of time, rediscovering an older app is like finding a piece of treasure.

    BM2 is solid and you can get a lot of work done quickly. Don't get caught up in the, "I gotta have every music app" syndrome. A few good tools prevent you from being led down the path of endless time wasting with one trick ponies.

    With Korg intentionally hobbling Gadgets ability to sequence other apps and hardware, BM3 looks to be the release of the year if it delivers.
    And considering BM2 has been rock stable for me I have little reason to doubt that it will.
    Which is also why I don't mind the wait.

    BM2 is pretty fantastic. It's the first iOS DAW I focused my attention to. I only left due to
    a) effects at first, then
    b) file management, and finally
    c) workflow. Gadget ended up simply being a more productive environment for me.
    Looking forward to giving BM3 a chance to be my one stop shop.

    Could you elaborate on the path you took for the benefit of others that are new to this?
    I think the recurring question here of which apps to start with is often approached from the point of view of which apps would you buy if you had it all to do over again. Though perhaps the experience gained from apps that would no longer make that list was important. Maybe it's the process that matters.

    2. Tried Logic...then ran away in fear.
    3. Decided to give Korg Gadget a try on my iPad - fell in love
    4. Started poking around with AudioBus and AUM - was hard to understand the whole Midi world of things being new to music making
    5. Saw modstep and loved the idea of it - AUM started to make total sense
      5.5 Picked up Touchable for Live and loved it - way better than Lemur
    6. Became obsessed with the Push 2 and Ableton because of Live's Clips view - it just makes sense to me
    7. Pulled the trigger and got Push 2 and Live during their annual sale - love it to date
    8. Got more and more comfortable with Modstep and Gadget - great workflow apps IMHO
    9. Tried iMPC Pro - like it but hate it poor recording and bugginess
    10. Downloaded BM2 - was confused with workflow
    11. Tried BeatHawk - love it, but hate the lack of an iPad Pro 12.9 rendered UI (I'm a designer so yeah, it bugs me :)
    12. Picked up some hardware (Novation Circuit, Korg Minilogue, Pioneer Toraiz AS-1) - love this gear

    14. Been looking @ all the loverly UI screenshots of BM3 and am intrigued
    15. Reinstalled BM2 and whoa...magically it all makes sense now - I guess after trying all of the different flavors of how to create music things just start to click after a while. Now I don't profess to know how to use it like a master, but the simple fact that I can now lay down a beat, add some melody and grind it out with Filters and Effects makes me happy to use the app...regardless of the dated UI workflow. It just works.
