iOS Synth with best user interface?
Which iOS synth has the best user interface for directly tweaking parameters on the fly using the touchscreen? I'm thinking along the lines of "one knob per function" rather than, for instance, an assignable XY controller.
Things I'm looking for:
- On the touchscreen, I vastly prefer sliders to knobs
- Ability to hide the on-screen keyboard as I usually use a MIDI controller
- The less tabs/pages, the better (Sunrizer!)
Of course comment on the sound as well! Primarily looking for iPad apps but iPhone/universal is always a bonus.

Alchemy ... poor, doomed, lovely Alchemy.
Hideable keys are unusual in iOS synths...Thor has a minimizable keyboard and a very interesting way of cramming tons of tweaking into one page (a kind of accordion GUI). It also has a control scheme that sort of turns dials into sliders...
IceGear stuff, Lorentz, Redshrike, Mersenne, Laplace are all one page GUI, a mix of sliders and dials, and are all wonderful and worth having IMHO.
This depends a bit on what you're looking for, flavor or synthesis type, and the "how deep" versus "how easy to tweak" type of calculus. The free Nanologue is a very accessible one pager and sounds great but it's on the simple side...Epic Synth has a very simple 2 page GUI but contains classic sounds, and mostly sliders. The other end would be the many first tier instruments that include all kinds of dials and sliders, and many sub pages...DRC, iTuttle, and about 30 others.
Might look at Synthmaster player which is a close replacement for Alchemy in that it's a "player" with many slider tweaks but not full synthesis access...but it's dials rather than sliders now

I too prefer faders over knobs, and maybe thats why i like the interface of odyssei so much. And as a bonus, it also sounds great. Just too bad there is no audio unit version of it. But i think its such a great synth that its worth it easily even as is. Also sadly you cant hide the keyboard, i think all apps should have this, i really like sunrizer for it, but poison 202 has pretty much replaced it for me.
Definitely trying to find that sweet spot between depth and tweakability. Full synthesis access is a must. I have Nanologue (of course) and while the interface is more what I'm looking for, it is indeed too limited. Looking deeper into Thor and Epic Synth, Tera looks good too.
ODYSSEi and Lorentz will satisfy your slider jones for sure. I prefer the arp in Lorentz (all the icework synths for that matter) but you may find the sound of the ODYSSEi a little warmer.
Knobs and faders may be similar in some apps but certainly knobs are not so well implemented in some apps. MIDI Learn is my bff!
Yes... agreed. But it's still working fine, so we have the Camel version in "ghost" like form for now. Obviously the GarageBand version is not the same.
And sounds great to my ears (thought to recommend it but the GUI can be tough on the eyes)
Addictive Pro is very powerful, but at first sight not what you are looking for. Knobs and lot of tabs. The knobs can obviously be linear and have convenient stickers that show the exact value. No guesswork. But when you are on the " MOD" page, things are smartly arranged so that you can tweek many of the parameters and still keep overview; in my opinion.
After checking out some videos of Thor, it looks to have a very well thought out interface. Powerful too.
Good thought. I'm guessing Addictive Pro might be the synth I most under-rate...
I love the ARP Odyssey and don't really have any complaints about it, but a lot of users find the sliders finicky and tough to get back to zero position.
To me, it's a blast to play, program, and sequence in real-time. I've dealt with worse things than imperfect sliders before for quality sound.
I agree, clever interface design, with the collapsing sections that leave the most important controls available. The Swedes are masters of storage. Other than Thor, like others have said, Sunrizer or Lorentz. Both are great, one page synths with sliders. To me, Sunrizer is similar to the Nord Lead, Lorentz is sort of an updated Juno 106.

1st Tier for sure. Might look at the other Virsyn stuff while you're at it- very special across the roster: Posiedon, microTERA, Cube

I'm a fan of Epic Synth too but it should be noted that barring a 64 bit update it is headed for extinction when meteor 11 hits.
I'd be extremely surprised if it didn't as the two appear to share a common structure. Probably more a question of when...
Might wanna check out Patterning,if you are interested in making perfect drums loops(or more stuff),in a circular environment.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say Moog Model 15. It’s extremely skeuomorphic, a bit daunting at first, limited compared to many modular systems, and it uses knobs instead of sliders. But it has multiple hideable controller types, one function per knob, and almost no menu diving. On an iPad, you can fit the entire “main” synth into one screen.
Zooming and scrolling is smooth, even on my iPhone 6 / iPad Mini 4. Moog included some lovely quality-of-life features like double tap to reset controls and cloud sync for presets. It’s got Link and great MIDI implementation, so you can use it as a synth module and/or a powerful touchscreen MIDI controller. And good lord does it ever sound good...
A lot of people hate the UI but the more I use other apps and gear, the more I appreciate Model 15.

Funny I am using apps that I bought so long ago.....
Moog Model D - because it is fun to make sounds. Caustic has a very retro, but useful GUI. Bram Bos apps. Kauldron isn't bad.
