is there some sort of manual I haven't seen yet? I think I could need one

for example: how do I get the drumloops going?

  • Please gush away ;-) The more the merrier. No manual/tutorial yet, still to be done. Will addres the rest later!

  • I tried to load in AB3. Very excited to see the Loopy 3 (!) icon appear, but alas, SampleBot wouldn't load.

Mind you, I'm doing this at work, so I'm not giving my full attention...
But this is a beautiful-looking app. Well done.

Select the drum icon, choose the type of pattern you want, and then tap in the timeline on the drums line (it's the row at the top of the timeline) to add the pattern at the point where you tap.

Michael, any chance of record quantization?

  • love the interface! Will there be a way to import audio in the future? Though I am definitely excited about recording random stuff from the mic

  • Hope I can get added to the beta list! Signed up just recently.

placing the pattern worked, thx, but unfortunately I don't hear them

managed to record some vocal & guitars on the pads page, but overall I don't think I can be of much help here as I don't understand the functionalites

    I'll keep on trying though

You need to record samples into the pads marked Kick, Snare and Hi-Hat on the front screen. There seems to be some kind of effect applied to them, but I'm not sure what.

  • obligatory 'follow action' question

  • This is surprisingly fun. I feel like I'm beardyman.

  • Looping regions would be cool.

I just discovered beardyman this afternoon....watched sonic state video with him interviewed about his rig....very interesting stuff

Right, so we're in kind of a yellofierish state right now, which is cool. But without import audio or AB in, it doesn't go beyond sorta creative beatboxing stuff. I agree that it's fun but a bit more limited than I was expecting given the original description. Also, no Ableton Link option that I can see? Or am I missing that?

    boim bumm tchack?

    n that's all?

  • Can clip tails be trimmed? I can't seem to stop recording without adding a pop to the end of a clip when I tap to stop.

  • I noticed a few things that I feel is really needed both here and in Loopy, that is the ability to trim each sample.

The time loop mode looks to be set to quantize on the ¼ note ( or dependent on the zoom level )without the possibility to be overlapped. It would be nice if this was adjustable to other variables and to have free placement on the timeline.

I haven’t found a way to add labels to the pads. ( I’m old and my memory stinks. ) And maybe have the labels appear in the representative timeline.

Oh, and as long as I have my wish list going, being able to record from a AUv3 instrument. Or for that matter being able to use this as an AUv3 instrument. Is it going to be AB compatible?

But for the most part it has a good work flow and is visually appealing and a lot of fun.

  • It really is very easy to make those samples, very instant indeed :)

I managed to get some beatbox style kick, snare and hat nosies recorded with my apple headset mic and then had fun trying out the grooves - that's a really useful tool and great for making some instant backing / click tracks that are more fun to play with than a boring old metronome.

I need to plug in my actual audio interface / (Line6 Helix probably) and try and sample some proper sounds now... and to test out the amazing looking...

    MIDI BINDINGS..

has anyone spotted these yet? I'm really happy about these @Michael . I love the fact that there are nudge up and down options for tempo (with bpm amount) and for volume (or balance) with dB amount - as well as being able to assign it to a cc control for a knob or expression pedal, or to the volume set to a fixed value. Very comprehensive!

Personally I've been longing for a nudge up / down volume control for ease of use with foot controllers. (oh and there's pickup mode too!)

I've noticed you have done some ground work for scenes in that you can assign a control to "track1" in all scenes so your controls would work when you change scenes, or if you prefer you can set to "track1" on a specific scene.. Neat.

This all bodes very well for Loopy Pro :) (Right I am done gushing for now.)

  • Still waiting for an invitation...

  • Thanks, @Michael_R_Grant!

Really not sure about the sequencer yet, though. It starts off too far zoomed out, and there's no sense of where you are on the timeline when you zoom in (and zooming in is necessary). I'd like a switchable option to turn on bar numbers. I get that it's going for a minimal aesthetic but that aspect of it doesn't quite work for me. Also, it doesn't seem that you can grab the playhead and move it.

Three excellent points. I'm going to remedy them all - quite happy to make bar numbers a permanent addition.

There was text in the description about holding to play, but I didn't get that. Just a tap to play the whole sample and there doesn't seem to be another 'mode' in the settings for hold. I wonder if I've missed something.

No settings per se - you can just either tap, or hold. If you hold, it'll stop the sample playing when you release. If you tap, it'll play out till the end.

But I hasten to say again: the immediacy of recording samples is really cool indeed. Swipe to clear works excellently.

    Great!

If you record a longer sample, does the note length for it increase in the timeline? I just did some silly one shot noises!

    Yup, it does

You're not the first to comment on that one - I think it needs some prompting. The idea with the drum patterns is you select the pattern then tap in the drum track to place it on the timeline where you tapped. Then, it'll play using the three drum samples (which you record). I thought about auto-filling the timeline when you select a drum pattern, but I think that might be the wrong approach - I'd prefer to prompt the first few times, indicating where to tap to place the pattern. Thoughts welcome!

Yep, AB/IAA/Link coming in the next build

I can probably swing that.. can it be a constant, so I can just make an on/off switch in settings? Like, semiquavers? (Uh, sixteenth notes)

("swing" was a poor choice of words. No, I'll probably not add swing as an option this time around ;-))

There actually is now, but it's pretty invisible at present: it works via "Open In" from other apps. But I'm thinking I'll probably add a pad editor screen, where you can name pads, trim them, and audio copy/paste. And probably adjust vol and bal.

Any perceived effects are entirely of your own imagination =D (the easiest implementation of effects ever!)

Ultimately (it may or may not make it into v1.0). I think that pop can be fixed by just moving the end record point a little before the tap, though.

I noticed a few things that I feel is really needed both here and in Loopy, that is the ability to trim each sample.

I agree - I’m going to add this.

The time loop mode looks to be set to quantize on the ¼ note ( or dependent on the zoom level )without the possibility to be overlapped. It would be nice if this was adjustable to other variables and to have free placement on the timeline.

Interesting, you’re not the first to make this observation! Actually, the quantisation level is dependent on the zoom level, so if you zoom in, you get more control. But that doesn’t seem to be obvious enough. Not quite sure what to do about that at this stage - I don’t have enough room in the toolbar to add a quantisation toggle setting or anything like that. I thought about adding a mechanism where if you hold for a certain duration, it switches off the quantise - and maybe zooms in a bit - but that doesn’t seem much more obvious and visible than how it is right now. Tricky. I’ll need to think more about this (let me know if you have any ideas, too).

I haven’t found a way to add labels to the pads. ( I’m old and my memory stinks. ) And maybe have the labels appear in the representative timeline.

Support for this is implemented already, but there’s just no editing UI yet. I’ll add that when I do the loop trimmer.

Oh, and as long as I have my wish list going, being able to record from a AUv3 instrument. Or for that matter being able to use this as an AUv3 instrument. Is it going to be AB compatible?

I’ll be adding Audiobus support shortly, so that’ll handle the first part of that… the latter may have to wait for Loopy Pro!
