ios11 zombie IAA's

Im having massive battery issues with zombie IAA's in IOS 11. The weird thing is that the IAA 's draining the battery are not oven ones that I've had recently open. Culprits include Model 15, Animoog and Phonem. Anyone else experiencing this?

I’ve seen it, yes. But also in iOS10. I have suspected for a while now that it is related to App updates or re-installations. They seem to be launched by iOS after getting updated and then stay in the background. Would that fit what you’re seeing?

  • Ive not experienced it to the same degree in IOS 10. It does not appear to relate to app updates.

Another feature which may or may not be connected is that at least 2 of the apps, namely Animoog and Phonem do not appear in the SETTINGS list (although I know this can be temperamental anyways).

Ive become aware of all this as battery life has become problematic - quick drains and slow charging since upgrading, so i've been keeping an eye on battery usage..... Im on an IPad Pro.

thinking I need to turn off background audio on all apps systematically......

  • Doesn't soft reset work anymore ? ( still on 10 )
Hold down power button until the option to power off comes , release the button and press home for some seconds.

  • Soft reset works but not preventing reoccurance

  • I have had some apps do this, going through the battery usage list shows the culprits usually so I just turn off that apps background updates functionality. I though the soft reset was to hold power to the "slide to turn off" screen, but just hit the X instead to cancel... it's seemed to have really closed everything for me after I run into shit like this.

This is one of the few anomalies that comes with using iOS for music production. It sucks but next to some of the hassles that I ran into daily using a desktop DAW it's livable.

  • Also note that if you've had the apps loaded in Audiobus, then Audiobus itself might launch them again in the background. For example, if they're currently loaded in Audiobus, and then you go to the multitasking view to "swipe away" all your apps to get a clean state - if you happen to swipe away one of the apps loaded into Audiobus before you swipe away Audiobus itself, then Audiobus will automagically re-launch the killed app in the background.

This is why I bring all of the IAA apps in the session to the foreground, clear the session in Audiobus and then close all of the IAA apps that were in the session.

That's what always has worked for me too.

  • That also works for me.... unless I forget!

  • Close all apps and then soft reset after every music session is such an ingrained habit now I don’t even think about it now. I very rarely have battery or other weirdness any more.

I also generally turn off background audio and let Audiobus take care of that.

Good point about background refresh. I turn that off for almost everything. Notifications too.

  • How does one check to see if any of these apps are running mysteriously in the background without your knowledge?

Fireing up something like midibridge and seeing what midi connections are available is often a good clue.

    Shoot first. Don't ask questions.

Just assume they are and clean up manually is my motto.

Excellent idea!! Since Midibridge is not iOS 11 compatible, I used the successor app, MidiFire. I was all clean!

And iOS 11 takes much longer to reboot than iOS 10

You don't need to fully boot to clear zombies. Just quit all apps, hold down the power button until the slider appears, then hold the home button until you get back to the home screen. After a few thousand times you won't even realize you're doing it any more.

    Good tip

Does the hold the home button thing still work to clear zombie apps?

I turned on my iPad just now to find it had gone from 100% battery to 15% battery overnight and the only thing I'd done is run Digital D1 as an AU app inside garageband yesterday. I had quit both apps at the time, as I usually do, but it must have created a zombie on me. The battery health indicated 100% battery usage by D1 since last full charge.

Anyway I'm on the latest iPad OS 13.something. I press the power button until the slider appears and then hold the home button, but now it is going very quickly past the home screen to a "fingerprint not recognized, enter password". A quick password entry and all is good.
