I really wish these apps had timing nudge adjustment.
I do easily get bored with everything being stuck on a grid - its so unnatural / stiff /mathematical = no groove ....
At least i can record the MIDI into a DAW and push/pull timing around on events and get some "feel" happening, then spit it back to my iPad and get more intriguing results.
I loosen things up by using the AB3 randomization filter in between the makers and sound generators in AB3. It's not quite "enough" but it definitely helps.
So does the AB3 randomization filter adjust the timing of events?
Loving using the troublemaker seq on my other synths (DRC tonight). To be honest I've never had much use for the 303 sound of TM (but it does sound great) - but the sequencer is so awesome.
Bass line from TM into DRC. A ripplemaker sequence with slight mutation on. A drum patttern running in Groovebox along with a simple melody and another bassline too. Much fun to be had!
Tidy!
What’s the easiest way to transpose @brambos apps high or low? Sometimes I want bass and sometimes I want twinkly. MF Transposer?
Yep.
Good examples. I was stuggling to see what the fuss was all about. Thanks for the help
Y'all
Do you lose core midi then? Or can you combine with MF Adapter to connect non AB3 synths?
For sure. I had fun earlier recording ruis midi out into Cubasis and the dragging the recorded note lanes around until something musical happened. Of course, could do it in real time with diverging like midiflow. Haven't tried it yet. That might make for a fun community project (setting up and sharing a bunch of "RuisMaker notes to various scales" midiflow presets).
Don't worry, I'm heavily working on that one at the moment.
Alright, next question — considering that I don’t own AUM, what’s the easiest way to route MIDI to Ableton Live? In Model 15, I just set Output to “IDAM” and set Ableton’s input to “iPad” then configure the channel and start playing.
AB3 routes MIDI to other apps just fine but doesn’t seem to send to Network Session or IDAM. I also tried sending Ruismaker THROUGH Model 15, but had no luck there either. I don’t exactly mind purchasing AUM or another app but would prefer to work with as few chain links as possible.
Am I missing something obvious?
@jrjulius Maybe start a new thread?
SAHWHEEET!
Though, I have to admit the tiniest bit of disappointment. When I first read your reply, I thought you were saying that you were heavily working on a set of "Ruismaker notes to common scales" presets.
My sequencers now have the "Midi Port", but you need to bring your own cables, so to say. You could use something like AUM, MidiFire etc. to route the MIDI to where you want it to go.
I have no experience with IDAM yet; still need to look into it. But if it behaves like a normal MIDI destination it should work.
Well, they're Audio Units first and foremost. If you need advanced timing features and high PPQ precision nudging that's a job that's perfect for a DAW. The standalone apps are simple by design, but you could always use their MIDI file export as a starting point for all sorts of groove quantizations in your sequencer of choice
Cool thanks! AUM looks great, and MidiFlow looks like it will meet my needs at a lower price point. I’ll check out MidiFire and a few other options too. I should probably have something like this anyways, I suspect it’ll come in handy many times in the future.
PS thank you so much for making these apps!!
I tend to roll off the 'env mod', 'punch' and 'accent' when I use it, give it a long decay and avoid any note slides - gives me more of a 'standard' bass sound that way.
That was my initial thought but I didn’t want to clutter the front page up. It looks like there are a few options, but nothing built into the apps I already own.
Yeh baby! Can’t wait!
AUM is an essential iOS app
@brambos - so I can get my head around the IOS limitations, does the Audio Units format mean that all of the apps are restricted to bars/ beats - no finer timing divisions?
I'm absolutely happy working by creating on IOS and then using my DAW's to do finer adjustments, and use many amazing DAW software and amazing Kontakt sample libraries to expand upon my IOS creations - its a setup/relationship that I'm totally in love with !
To the contrary. "Audio Unit" means that the synth engine is actually a plugin (like VST/AU on your desktop) which can be loaded into any serious iOS DAW and take advantage of whatever groove/quantize/editing features are available there.
For example: here's the Ruismaker plugin running as an Audio Unit inside Cubasis. I have imported a MIDI file generated by the standalone version of Ruismaker into Cubasis and here I can do all the editing, finetuning and quantizing I want to take things off grid, etc.
Having something available as an Audio Unit means that you have a huge freedom to do things with a synthesizer enginge and you're not limited by what the standard standalone sequencer offers.
Understood - although I thought you implied Audio Units may have limitations in regards to finer advanced timings.
Why are devs not getting into micro timings I wonder?
Is it a programming nightmare?
I get it that the majority of users want everything to be stuck to a grid, but am curios why programmers ignore more "human" timing.
I have spent decades working in recording studios, and worked with many top drummers, who even though lock to a click track, push and pull the timing around and make it feel special.
Audio Units are not bound to any timing. They just play whenever they receive a MIDI command (which means sample-accurate timing). I'm mostly interested in making the plugins and leaving the sequencers to DAW makers. That's why my Ruismakers started out without a sequencer in the first place.
I just added sequencers to my plugins because that would add something fun to play with on the bus (or have an impromptu jam with some friends over Link). But I assume that most people who want to produce a complete track are using a 'serious' DAW/sequencer anyway, and in combination with Audio Unit plugins those do all the microtimings and unquantized recording you'll ever need.
I don't believe it would be possible to design one app that does everything for everyone on iOS. The host/plugin system works so nicely, because you can pick your favorite flavor of sequencer and get the plugins you need and they'll integrate seamlessly.
In no way am I whinging about your great apps by the way
Never thought you were!
p.s. I'm Dutch, and our to-the-point manner of communicating is sometimes mistaken for rudeness or bluntness... So don't read too much in my tone of voice. I'm rarely offended, irritated or annoyed. Well, not by music-related discussions anyway
To the point is great in my book !
Something like the Brambos equivalent to Fugue Machine? If so, I’d instant buy that.
Definitely. I like FM but it's a bit too random and weird for proper stuff. The sequencers in Ripplemaker and Troublemaker are a joy to use, and I'm loving the MIDI update. Being able to trigger multiple sequences/apps though with a standalone app could be the iOS a go-to sequencer. I've got most of the existing ones, but they're just too fiddly/complicated/time consuming to use.
This is not a request nag though, I'm under no illusions of the amount of work involved - if it's even possible, I'm happily enjoying the MIDI update at the moment!
