It doesn't shit the bed on me.
You can actually save a project and know it'll load up just the way you left it. Like a DAW in desktop-land. I gave up on iOS DAWs and IAA/AU couple of years ago. I use AUM or Audiobus to quickly build a groovebox with some drum/synth/fx apps and just mess around with that until something decent worth recording happens. Other then that, it's Gadget all the way.
It's so blue. I like blue. Nuff said.
This is a big plus for me. I work on a song for an hour. Try another song for a bit. Maybe a different song next night. Having to connect synths via AU or IAA becomes a pain. Having Gadget open up in seconds with all the synths as you left is huge for me. That and the ease of use and how quickly you can record ideas and tweak the notes and record automation.
Self-contained sketchpad, quick and reliable, versatile sounds, easy transfer to desktop, pleasant visually, nice piano roll... I know how it works better than stuff I haven't tried and it's... hard to put in words, but let's go with groovy.
Ableton Project exports as midi or audio files.
Boom,
Completely agree with all the above.
It feels like im using Reason on osx, obviously on a smaller scale, but with all the fun.
Cause BM3 was way overhyped and NS2 is not out yet lol
one of the best easy to understand interfaces...no need to reach to manual time and again, hence music creation is a breeze, even is Midi use is a breeze, if there is something you think that cant be done .. then it cant be done..no hidden features as a such..
Simplicity ... compared with trying to sync several separate apps. Solid ...rarely if ever crashes. Abundance of sounds (for the type of music I attempt to make ) portability ...I can work on something on my phone and simply transfer to iPad or vice Versa.
Only thing missing is midi out but there are work arounds.
Ease of automation, plenty of useful gadgets and I can easily transfer any sketches to ableton via Dropbox. Much easier to arrange from there and I can use my eventide effects!
The ability to instantly recall projects, even across devices.
Easy automation of almost any parameter.
Large pool of sounds (I have all expansions and IAP).
I think the biggest plus is the simplicity. Although I like all the possibilities with AB3 and AUM and all the cool synths on iOS (I have a lot of them) - but I've ended up using Gadget almost exclusively because I don't want all the hassle of setting up every time I want to make music.
The most obvious reason... I paid so much for it!
Also, a positive side-effect has been that I'm much LESS tempted to buy every new cool synth that comes out ;-)
I'd rather spend my money on expansions to Gadget.
While I do get some new apps every now and then I'll always have some store-credits for Korg stuff...
I love the integration and automation options and have really grown attached to the nanoKEY Studio.
When I was getting started out I always dreamt of having M1, WaveStation, Mono/Poly and other Korg stuff and now I have them all as 'Gadgets'. My first ever hardware sampler was the Korg Electribe ES-1 and I still wish to see it as a 'Gadget' inside Gadget
I'm hoping someone wins the bingo in iDS-10 and it shows up as a free gadget in the following update. The vocoder/voice synth would be great to have on the shelf.
Yes, two kinds actually, they aren't the greatest samplers. They are IAPs though.
Gadget isn't perfect, being such a closed environment, however, it's such a large bank of sounds to sample. From a MiniMoog clone to a 303 clone, to drum samples pouring out my nose, it's really great.
For me, on Desktop I use AbletonLive to compose and sequence, and Reason 5 to produce the actual sounds... On iOS, I've found a way to almost replicate that with BM3 as the sequencer and Gadget as one major source of most of the sounds I may need.
This is what I read:
I don't have Gadget myself though, never bought into the Korg ecosystem and by now it'd way too expensive to even consider it. I like [X] and am happily creating using that.
Totally Agreed, Well said!
It was the first iOS DAW I bought and it’s (mostly) still a pleasure to work with now. I find piano roll editing a bit of a chore — recording things in and manipulating lots of notes — and the arrangement of full tracks is a bit fiddly.
BUT...
the synths go from simple and effective to amazing and deep IAPs. I bought bought the Mac version so my workflow now is to write / noodle / jam and then export to Ableton Live as MIDI with all the VSTs available in Live for further editing, that really is the killer feature for me.
Agreed.
If gadget opened up independent outs i would never touch another ios synth. Imagine subgrouping drums into an aum track and a couple more subgroups.
As it is i only use other stuff to Create loops. Whenever i try to set up a multiapp project i get discouraged and when i start a new gadget tune i’m like “serves me right for being stubborn”. We’re about due for a new update right?
The only problem I have with Gadget is taking it for granted...
tbh I rarely finish anything in Gadget, but I start a lot of stuff and export things either as Ableton projects into Ableton and finish them there, or send separated audio files to BM3 or even Blocs Waves.
However i think the effects section could use some improvement....maybe take ideas from syntronik.
Some people complain about Gadget being a closed system. But I'm glad that it is because it keeps it stable. iOS is really not such a stable environment as it is. So adding AUs would turn this incredibly awesome app into a nightmare. Korg have added some really nice IAPs as Gadgets (iMono/Poly, Odyssei, iWavestation, and iM1) so far, and there's a lot you can do with them, especially with multiple instances of them. I've always wanted those synths in the iOS environment, and having them as gadgets is a Godsend. I'm really excited to see what else lies ahead.
