In fact, I just bought the IAP to support you even though I don't know how I'll use it yet! Looking forward to the video!
At least when doing mostly EDM (like myself), you'll hit the limit pretty quickly. The demo song (Alpha) has... 24 tracks I think
I like having notes and each controller on separate tracks, so that adds up quickly.
Have fun!
Where can you adjust the velocity of a given note? Couldn't figure this out and searches haven't turned up anything...
At the bottom left of the Pianoroll editor, there's a button with a note icon in it. Tap it to switch to velocity editing.
You can then edit the velocities by selecting and then moving them, using the "Range" tool in the "Magic Wand" menu, or even draw them (Draw toggle at the bottom left) as if they were controller data.
You can also limit the velocities shown by first selecting the corresponding notes in Note mode, and then switching to velocity editing. Only the velocities of the previously selected notes will be shown (and edited). Useful for editing only certain notes of chords, etc.
Wow great job on the manual man! I guess we’re so used to just diving in and ask questions later that we forget how utterly important is to read the manual.
It's probably something like "The less manual you need, the better the app"
But a few key concepts may be hard to intuitively grasp, so reading the manual really lets you work more efficiently... but the manual is actually missing a section on velocity editing, we'll be sure to add that
Mostly I would just want a video manual with the basics. I got it mostly down but sloppy.
The challenge of new software is mostly working the UI.
Still, the fact that this now exists ON IPHONE makes me a happy boy. Finally out of the Gadget box on ipHone!
That's super helpful - thanks! I had pressed the eighth not icon and gotten to the screen, but I hadn't pre-selected any notes so nothing was working.
Loving this app. Spent all day rebuilding an arrangement of a tune that's been on the shelf for 2 years. I can finally finish it!
It should display all velocities when you hadn't selected any notes.
Glad to hear that, have fun.
I was running Xequence with AUM and Zeeon AU. While in AUM, after a couple of loops, the midi notes stopped playing. I switched backed to Xequence and saw that the transport was still running, but AUM wasn't receiving any midi. Pressed stop and started it again and everything was back to normal. This happened multiple times during the session.
Is it possible to have an option to mute the sound trigger when moving the note or entering a new note?
Has Xequence been running in the background for longer than about 5 minutes?
Sure that would be possible... we just thought that note preview would always be desirable and never get "in the way"...?
Happened to me this morning as well! I tried everything and wonder if it’s related to AUM. Really wish someone who has the midiflow app, could monitor if Xequencer is still outputting midi, if its not, then theres the issue.
It is possible. This is on an ipad pro 10.5
I would prefer to have it as an option like in other apps. I personally find it intrusive with mono synths running 16ths.
Noted!
Well, due to the amazing interaction here by @SevenSystems and also thanks to mitch’s video I have fallen off the fence and gone all in.
@SevenSystems - do you have any plans to add midi clip export to Xequence?
Yes, MIDI File Import/Export is planned for a mid-term update, I'll say roughly 2-3 months.
Sounds good! Thanks for the info.
Just watched Mitch’s vid myself, looks very tightly focused with some clever workflow enhancements. Stuff like being able to select the beat and link sections ... and the +/- 200ms nudging.
Enough to get me onto the ‘demo’ anyway, will probably go full fat soon after.
Dev involvement also a big factor, good stuff @SevenSystems.
Hey Mathias! I think you’ll like it.
It’s a great app!!
Ohoy Sean!
Yeah, I think I'll like it too, still working on my current set-up architecture, and this will definitely be a good tool in there. My holy grail is the midi sequencer that "feels" best working in. Both MTS, Cubasis and Auria have fallen by the wayside on that, as they on paper look great, but in reality lack...umm..."something" (that is hard to define), whereas Gadget actually has the simplicity alright and I love it despite what it is (which is a closed box), so I'm still on my quest of finding The Best Midi Sequencer (that isn't Gadget). This feels promising so far, but I sort of depend on the things that aren't there just yet as well, though that is fine as the rest of my set-up isn't ready just yet either.
Yes, there is something liberating about separating out the sequencer from what its sequencing. I get it about trying to support apps naively for ease of setup, but it seems to cause so many headaches and bog down development so badly that feature improvements can be slow in coming. Plus there's so much more possibility of breakage with OS updates.
I've always treated ModStep and Infinite Looper as purely midi sequencers and have hosted all apps in AB3 or AUM. Xequence is a great addition to that set of tools.
+1
At least with Xequence you can see every button / menu needed with a quick glance through the screen. The first thing I did was press every button to understand what was there and what it does. Didn't take long.
Some people are just intuitively not going to like the idea of having to use the move/lengthen buttons instead of, grabbing a part of the note to move it and another to lengthen it. Once you get used to the idea, and realize that you're no longer having to try three or four times to grab the right part of the note, it works super well!
I say stick to your guns @SevenSystems on the interface design. It works great.
Feature suggestion:
It would be super helpful if the notes from other patterns in the same timeline position for an instrument could optionally be displayed lightly colored in the background while editing a pattern. Say you have a track for kick and snare and are now laying down hi-hats in another track. Having a reference for what is going on in the other patterns while entering notes is very useful.
Some DAWs refer to these as "ghost notes" but that's not a great term since it can also mean something different, particularly to drummers.
Having the option to choose which instrument(s) show in the background would be even better. For instance, to show a drum pattern when creating a bass line, as a reference to where the kick hits.
That would indeed be handy. Auria Pro has it. MTS (Pro IAP) has it too, where you can actually select a bunch of midi channels and go to edit mode, and they sort of show up on the same timeline, though they in reality are on separate channels.
@wim, @hellquist: Yes "ghost" notes (or controllers!) are very useful. Currently, the drawing code for the Pianoroll (and controller and velocity) editors is too slow to handle that, but after I reimplemented that (in the same way that I did with the Arranger in the last update), that should be absolutely doable.
Kinda figured you'd say that.

lovin' everythign bout this app, while looking forward to all the stuff coming.
Cheers. Do take a (short) break once in awhile.
Agreed @tja!! @SevenSystems is exactly right, and I love that there is a visible representation in the UI for everything instead of gestures. Very very good design decision @SevenSystems !!
I like this idea, but I want to stress "optionally" displayed. Just like doing an A/B of a sound before and after effects, I would find it useful and welcome, but would also find it distracting if it was a permanent item. An on-screen toggle (rather than a menu setting hidden in the settings menu) would be best for an option such as this.
