In the 70’s, he was the teen idol. Women loved him, blokes wanted to be him. Like the cool answer to Donny Osmond.

Oh, that’s not good. I’ve usually had a David Cassidy song or two on my playlist on and off over the past decade and a half. Good songs, good singer, good to play them again now and then.

I had a signed photo of him when I was a kid, think it was a prize from a Blue Peter competition. He did some lovely songs, shame his later years were so troubled.

In many ways DC was to pop what George Best was to football. Before DC, male teen pop stars were all like Fabian or at best Paul Anka. I leave Elvis out as he quickly transcended all that. They were for little girls to scream at. DC, found another path, whereby straight blokes could admire him and not have the piss taken. It’s the same model that the likes of Robbie Williams employs today,
There was a lad in school who was the spitting image of DC, used to have all the girls chasing after him. Connected with him on Facebook a couple of years back and the bastard hasn’t aged at all. I don’t need friends like that.
One of the many perils of Facebook. Just say no.
Don’t forget Billy Fury. The girls went completely mental on his concerts.

Billy Fury had a great voice, and was by far the best of his era in the UK. But still had that manufactured feel. Like all of the acts with unlikely, made up names. Vince Eager, Dickie Pride, Adam Faith, etc. They all had talent, it just got buried under the requirements of showbiz.
Cassidy, came across as a regular guy made good, living the dream. Likely, he was every bit as controlled as any of the older acts, but the perception was hugely different. Then there was the story. Starring in the Partridge Family, getting adopted for real by his on screen mom. Art imitating life,life imitating art.
Oh well... we still have Sean...

Nah, there were teen idols before Cassidy who made the transition to successful adult artists: Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Dion. All three of those guys were really good too.
Put me in the mood for some Dion. In the first one he's absolutely tearing it up live in front of some middle school girls in 1958. The second one is a killer rendition of a Dylan song from 1969. This guy could really sing:

The drummer in my band plays with Dion, he’s still great and pretty active.
Dion had one of the great voices. It is the sound of swagger.
Cassidy seemed like a nice guy. His father was a freakin' monster, though.

Sure, but none of those guys - good as they were - had that fresh faced boy next door thing. Sinatra was always linked to the Mafia, Darin was typical preppy material and Dion was Italian-American.

As for Kim Wilde, she’s actually good at the gardening show, and can still be credible singing her old hits. She’s achieved the right balance, which is good to see.
Such a pity that DC could not find the same kind of happy life after pop fame.
