Do I need Auria Pro or AUM?

I own Cubasis 2, Audioshare, and Audiobus and a bunch of iOS instruments. What will Auria Pro or AUM apps do for me? Is it worth it to pick up Auria Pro if I have Cubasis? I know that AUM is also a mixer but can't I mix my tracks in Cubasis, or even Garageband? I feel like I'm the only one on this forum that does not own Auria Pro or AUM. I am only interested in recording "soundtrack like" music using iSymphonic, Beathawk, etc.

  • If you can achieve results with Cubasis you don’t need anything else. Auria and Cubasis cover the very same area, while AUM is more geared towards live situations: no linear sequencing, no audio editing. If you really need to buy something I would recommend AUM since, even if it won’t add any feature you don’t already have(lie: fx slot swapping, link, midi AUv3, straightforward interface, lightweight ) it will at least suggest a different approach. Auria on the other hand is the most professional environment for mixing and mastering on iOS, but its midi and AU support is still lacking a few bits here and there.

  • I used to wonder about AUM as well. I used Cubasis and Audiobus, and was able to do most of what I wanted. After getting AUM the main benefit that I found was that it made everything work together better, and it eliminated my reliance on Cubasis to do a lot of the work of trying to fit things together.
Some apps are IAA type apps and not Audiobus compatible, so I would use Cubasis to host these. Now I use AUM instead. AUM easily can route Audio and Midi back and forth with Audiobus, and both can send these to Cubasis if you need to record. But if you are doing a live setup or just trying things out and jamming with different groups of apps, it is way more practical to use AUM instead of Cubasis. AUM has internal busses, excellent Midi routing, support for AU parameter automation, support for AU midi, and can record any armed tracks directly into Audioshare. So basically it replaced Cubasis for my current workflow and has greatly extended the options I have for trying to fit all of the iOS music apps together into a unified workflow.

With that said...I know nothing of Auria except that it has those Fab Filter plugins, which are very highly regarded.

  • If you have Cubasis and are happy with it, there isn't much reason to buy Auria, other than checking out another DAW. You could have a glance at the Auria Pro Tips and Tricks thread to see if there's any functionality in there that appeals to you, but in all honesty Auria does require investment in both time and money in order to get the best out of it.

Similarly, if you have Audiobus 3 then you might not need AUM. Personally I find AUM a lot more elegant and easier to set up, but the functionality is pretty similar (there are some differences of course). AUM is really great for setting up quick jams and sketches, but you can do this with AB as well.

  • As already said, no need for another DAW unless you want some of the plug ins that Auria offers over Cubasis. If your already invested in Cubasis, changing DAWs can cause more problems than it’s worth.

AUM on the other hand is just so useful for making quick tests and coming up with ideas. Just think of it as having a little project mixer lying around instead of always having to set up your ful studio.

I recently have bought most of iSymphonic with the idea to put more orchestral sounds into my tracks. Loving it so far!

  • You might not need AUM, but I am certain you will be happy to have it. It is a very nice and quick way to get things done. You can do all that stuff in Cubasis, but AUM is even quicker and easier to set up.

  • Sometimes I wonder if I should have AUM, having Auria, Cubasis, BM3 and Audiobus 3.
Thanks to you guys, i'm putting AUM on my wishlist. Maybe i'll get it on these sales, because sometimes Cubasis gets overloaded in my iPad mini retina

It's down $3 (priced $15.99) right now, which is why I finally grabbed it. I don't know what I'll use it for but I saved $3.

If you get Rosetta as well you will honestly not get why you didn't get AUM before.

What's Rosetta? Do you mean Rozeta?

    >

Yes, if you want to edit audio within the DAW, and use the Fab Filter Plug-ins. There are loads of YouTube features to demo the quality of those. As for AUM, the comments above say it all. So, if you have the cash, while the 50% sale is on (or a bit less for Apple’s British customers) then go for it!

  • Although you can still get a mix done in Cubasis, Auria Pro has superior mixing features such as assignable busses and auxes. I don’t have AUM as it’s just a mixer with no sequencing or anything like that. Personally not for me

I found a Rosetta preset in Phasemaker. :)

  • If you really need advanced mixing or midi functionality on your iPad, by all means get Auria Pro. If you don’t really need it, either because you have a Desktop DAW or any other reason, you are more than set with Cubasis, which is also fantastic, a real workhorse. About AUM, it’s real strength IMO is for live performances (either recording one take or recording a live gig). Otherwise, AudioBus 3 has you covered. Cheers!

Tell me, what can AUM not do regarding sends and busses compared to the other alternatives? :)

As an AUM user, I was puzzled by that comment. I have no experience with Auria Pro, but I was doubting the "superior" claim. Unless they meant to say AUM has superior mixing features such as assignable busses and auxes, which I would agree with. In fact I pointed this out, among other strengths in my earlier comment. :)

He was clearly saying Auria has superior mixing features than Cubasis, which is true, and even added he doesn’t have AUM because it is not a sequencer, which is also true.

^ also does AUM have an edit window like Cubasis and Auria? Auria and Cubasis are like traditional DAWs in that regard which is what I was getting at. Not saying AUM couldn’t get the job done

  • @theconnactic @YZJustDatGuy
Yeah that makes more sense now that I went back and read it again. I thought it was still AUM and Auria being compared, but see he was talking about Cubasis, which makes what was stated absolutely correct. Thanks for unconfusing me. :)
