preorders in App Store, good news for take my money Posse
Developers can choose never-before-published apps from their My Apps page to make available for preorder. They must choose an official release date before the preorder page goes live, and that date must be at least two days, but no more than 90 days, in the future. Once the release date is chosen and the app is approved by Apple, the app's page will go live, allowing customers to preorder the program.

why do I have a feeling that most users on this forum would probably beat the preorder release notification by instead checking on the app store every few minutes the day of a release?
I can think of two, maybe three developers who I would trust to get it right every time.
We don't need it, we have @flo26
I don't see why would 'preorder' mean anything. It's not like they'll be running out of stock on the day of a release, or am I missing something? Also, the devs might get the wrong idea of the eventual (low) sale figures, so might invest less time in the development of an app. Just my two pence...
agreed - can't see myself using this feature at any point in the future. (that goes for about 90% of any new feature Apple seems to introduce to ios...)
This seems another nail in the coffin for iOS as audio system...
May just be my suspicious mind, but with no obvious benefit to users or devs, isn't this just a way of reducing order transactions on release day for popular apps ? To maybe get over the fact that app store cannot always cope with the load ?
I reason there are no benefits in that money does not change hands until the day of release, so it's not like a user can 'reserve' funds for the purchase by paying early, nor the dev get money 'up-front', and with the release date commitments a dev would potentially have to delay release of the app until 2 days after approval to guarantee the release date ?
Maybe Apple is getting something out of this, but I don't understand the finance industry very well to see what would that be. Just a thought.
Precisely
So, can i preorder NanoStudio 2 please
It maybe makes sense to offer even lower pre-order prices but with already an intro sale, other usual sales every 1-2 months and whatever i see not much benefits here.
The thing which really would help are full functional time limited demos.

Would such apps not be subject to repeated renewal? What I mean is, every time a new feature is added, or a bug gets fixed, the app is different. Many people may wish to test a newer version, and being denied on the grounds that they already downloaded a faulty product would not be popular.
So I can pay for an app before its released but I can't have a wish list for one that I might be interested in later?
Wirdness!
The only use case I can see for this is a special pre-order sale price.
In some cases, I'd pre-order from a developer if it meant saving money at launch.
It could work as it works since decades with plug-ins. If there is a new version, the demo would be the same of course too. I stopped totally buying iOS apps because the fe tutorials and videos exist doesn´t tell me enough.
There are of course a few developers from which i would buy blind but in general i don´t want to buy something i´m not sure about. It doesn´t make a difference for me if it cost 20 dollar or 100 or whatever.
Welcome to the All New Cr(App)store

Not weird at all....to Tim Cook and the Cookies. Less for more is what he thinks the people want. Ultimately, Apple will be selling highly polished mirrors with slate backing, as the ultimate iPad for self exploration.
Will this works well together with the all new add banner features for companies with a high budget for marketing to finally push all the independent developers to death because Apple don´t like you since you won´t make them that much more rich.
Good point
Procreate had one similar thing...You could buy it as IAP and access future features before other people.
Now, that feature is free.
So I just bought a pre order that popped up for exactly this reason, 20% off pre release price, nice
Lmao. True
If this is like Amazon, pre-order sales get credited to the app on release day and help the app chart more strongly. Useful for discovery - loyal fans who pre order end up making the app more visible to general shoppers on release day.
And if this is anything like Amazon, you'll also see a lot of junk app developers trying to manipulate this to artificially boost their app rankings on launch day - not like that doesn't happen in a lot of other ways already, lol. It's a shame that the tools that are designed to benefit quality developers also often enable the disreputable ones too.
Interesting, crowd funding on iTunes. I think devs would loose the incentive to finish an app.
The 90 day limit and needing your app to be submitted and approved means that not really going to be a use case.
I just pre ordered a game for 20% discount which has great form on steam, a great dev and I was going to buy immediately on release (antihero). In this instance I’m happy to use it, but doubt I’ll do it much unless that perfect storm manages to present itself again
This is exactly what I thought when I seen it. "I was thinking of making an app, lets put it up for pre-sale and see if there is any interest. If there is none, I will just turn out some crap."
That's not possible. The app must be submitted and approved by AppStore Review before it can be made available for pre-order. As an indie dev, I'm not yet seeing why I would do this instead of simply releasing the app more or less directly after it has been approved.
Loyal fans? Has Justin Beiber branched into having someone smart develop an app.
Why would you pre order ? Not like the app is going to sell out is it ?
