Use iPad to sequence Logic Pro X on Mac?
Hi all - I've been using iOS devices to make music for years, but now starting to use Logic Pro X on a new iMac. So, I'm very ignorant about what can and cannot be done.
Can I use my iPad to sequence MIDI notes in Logic Pro X? Example, can I use Arpeggionome Pro to create MIDI notes in Logic Pro X? Right now, I don't have any type of MIDI interface between the iPad and Mac, just using the standard Lightning-to-USB cable.
If so, some basic instruction would be appreciated! Thanks!

You can also do it with just your lightning-connection. Once plugged in, go to AudioMidiSetup (Application), and „enable“ your iPad/iPhone. It will then appear in Logic as a midi-device... . Have fun!
Or use your mac keyboard as midi input and all thr midi tools Logic offers.

Yes, this of course too. But everytime i do this i got latency after a while. Almost like the iPad Pro drama at the beginning.
If your Mac and devices are new enough use blue tooth LE from device to Mac. Use Audio/Midi setup on the Mac to setup a BT port. Many iOS apps like Quantum, StepPolyArp, ChordPolyPad and others allow BT from the app. The trickiest part can be getting the BT connection established but it usually works well once you do. I think you can also use the iOS app Logic Remote to get a BT connection.
Interesting, I’ve been using IDAM quite a bit and haven’t encountered any latency. What did you experience? Just a gradual slowdown?
No. It works fine for a while but then often there is a moment where it starts to introduce a very high latency from zero to about a half second which is unusable for me.
Otherwise i would really record much more iOS sounds and include them in my projects.
I´m still on Sierra (not High Sierra) and my iPhone is on iOS 11. I think i didn´t had that when i was on the latest iOS version before iOS 11. But i think i used a third party app then. Maybe i try this again.
But i also saw now that i´m living at the edge of space on my drive. I always get a warning to delete some stuff (i wish i could). Maybe it´s a RAM, buffer whatever thingie.
Or setup a Network MIDI session.
i use IDAM for many hours on high sierra and it works terrific... bluetooth or network midi will only bring sadness

Maybe i update if i can get the space needed for that and i´m sure all my favorite tools are working on it (which are many).
What/Where is IDAM? An App? ios or Mac?
Is just the built in protocol that allows ios devices to send audio and midi through lightning cable and receive midi. The only thing you need to do is enable your iPad in audio midi settings, and for audio make sure you make an aggregate device that includes your iPad.
Music i/o (an app) allows big directional audio but i haven't gotten it to work with harrison mixbus yet, admittedly haven't tried in a while. My thought / dream is to use it with the iPad to make the iPad into a "dsp box" similar to a universal audio satellite. I should put that on my list this week, I'm involved in mixing a live album so I could use it for some things.
I did try to use drum jam through IDAM to play some percussion into a song I was mixing a few months ago but I did get latency. I should try again, although it probably would be easier to just record the loops in drum jam and import them to mixbus. I was using a USB hub into a macbook air that only has 2 usb ports though, so it's possible that an audio interface and iPad and external audio drive is too much throughput for that machine.
Short answer though, IDAM isn't terribly hard to set up.
IDAM = Inter-Device Audio MIDI. The audio side was around in iOS 10, but the MIDI part has only been available in the last few months since iOS 11.
Prior to that I used MusicIO, which did develop a “creeping latency” problem, which I identified to the developers and which was fixed in an update. It worked well for me until fall of 2016, when it started to have audio glitches. My emails to the developers went unanswered and It began to seem like abandonedware.
At that point I switched to Studiomux, which was much more difficult to use because the documentation is so poor, but once I figured out the routing for my DAW, it has worked great for me with IAA instruments.
But then in November, when I bought Neo-Soul Keys Studio, which doesn’t support IAA or Audiobus, only AUv3, I switched to IDAM, because I could find no way to send MIDI to AU instruments in Studiomux.
Since then, Studiomux has had some updates but I have not yet had a chance to test and see if they fixed the AU-MIDI problem. In the meantime I’ve been using IDAM: which has worked well, and setup and routing is straightforward (unlike Studiomux), but I HAVE noticed higher latency, at least with Neo-Soul Keys Studio. It also seemed like the “creeping latency” (increased latency over time) may be happening sometimes too, usually after a long period of inactivity or if the computer screen has gone to sleep. But it wasn’t nearly as bad as what I once experienced with MusicIO, and rebooting seemed to make things snappy again.
latest high sierra update had a fix for usb audio which has made idam audio rock solid for me, even after hours of use, with idle periods and sleep/wake cycles... before the update i had many problems including the creeping latency. just my experience.
Yes, I’m on El Capitan and can’t update to High Sierra at this time for various reasons.
OK, I just tested the latest Studiomux and unfortunately the problem with AU is still not fixed!
An AU loaded in Studiomux cannot receive MIDI. If you launch the app outside of Studiomux manually, it will receive MIDI and play through the iPad speaker. And if you play the on screen keyboard inside Studiomux, the AU instrument will send audio to the Mac, but it will not receive MIDI from the Mac. There is no way to get both MIDI and audio working with an AU in Studiomux.
IAA instruments continue to work fine for both audio and MIDI as they always have.

Studiomux Mac Server: 3.1 (also tested with 2.2.3)
Tested with both iSEM and Neo Soul Keys Studio AUv3 instruments
