@rickwaugh - thanks for that real world feedback on the modern Macbook Pro's.
I have had my concerns over the 2016/17 ones.
After your advice I will stick to a 2015 model for my next purchase.
Should get me at least 5 years until I see what pans out in the mac world.
Take a look at Geekbench for comparing performance scores of Macs,
https://browser.geekbench.com/mac-benchmarks
I find it very unfortunate that I have to agree completely from our experiences.
The large touchpad is a nice idea but does not work reliably in everyday use, it's more in the way than it helps. You cannot really avoid touching it with your palms all the time, and although the software claims to be able to handle that well, it doesn't.
The keyboard, advertised by Apple as more durable with great comfort and responsiveness, in reality is the opposite: Too hard, too unresponsive, too loud, breaks much faster than on the previous model, and too little key travel. As if typing on an iPad was better than typing on a quality desktop keyboard.
The new USB C port, advertised as the most powerful and flexible standard, until today seems to be the most useless one. Whatever peripherals I buy today, most still have USB Type A plugs and, guess what, cannot be used with these MacBooks out of the box.
When introducing new interface standards, by now, Apple has always combined them with more widespread ports, but I guess by now Apple designers have taken over the seats of experienced engineers and let the chinese develop the hardware.
I used to recommend MacBooks when money isn't an issue, but now I can only recommend to hurry up and find a dealer that still offers the 2015 model - a few months ago you could still order one directly from Apple including a 4-core i7 @2.8GHz and 16G RAM. I'm happy I did, hoping it will last until we see quality hardware from Apple again.
BTW, an even more important issue is CPU performance on later models without built-in fan. Forget CPU numbers on paper, in reality due to thermal physics, CPU runs at reduced clock speed most of the time, producing less heat and consuming less battery power - unfortunately delivering even lower performance, which might be OK for the office, but not for audio production.
^ What a depressing state of affairs
True.
But not as depressing as purchasing a recent model and find out afterwards
But also there are a lot people which seems happy with the latest models for audio production.
Especially the SSD are super fast but you pay a high price in Apple devices for that.
Mostly people love or hate it. Same with iPhones, iPads.
In general i agree and all these devices (yes, all) gone a bad way of thinner, smaller battery, more expensive, remove useful connectors, buggy software.
But i doubt that this will change anytime soon. People buy stuff and share holders are happy.
If there wouldn´t be Logic i had already switched to a more powerful windows machine but i hate windows even much more than everything Apple ever made and after years to learn it and demoed nearly every other DAW i can get for mac i want to stay with Logic for sure.
One thing for sure if i ever buy a Macbook Pro again i know i will go for a 2TB SSD.
My 2011 17" soldiers on, 6.5 years old, 4th logic board, but still running and still a great matt screen. How much longer though I wonder.
I wish they would offer 17" today too. 13" are useless for me and 15" is also a bit small for me.
But i bet mine will also last as long if i want and the good thing is all my software still runs on it from old stuff the the latest and greatest. Try that with an iOS device.
I got a 13” base model without touch bar and I’m happy with it.
I’m not an Ableton power user but I still didn’t hit 10% of cpu usage during my daw sessions.
Cool
I think I’ve read somewhere that Mackbook Pro 2012 is the most sold, because it was the last with SuperDrive.
Schools apparently bought a few... all over the world. My daughter got one at art school.
I loved the 11” MacBook I had from 2008. Small can be good at times.
My Mac Pro has the 30” Apple cinema screen. It’s too enormous, but you can fit a lot on the screen.
Wish you well with your further music making and Mac life
Agreed, the 11" laptop is an amazing size because I'm always on the go for work. The fact that it's so small and starts up so fast is the reason i started moving away from ios as my iPad air began showing its age, plus the iPad was not as good for typing documents for work even with a keyboard because of the hoops I had to jump through to get my documents where they needed to be in the format they need to be (no Dropbox, icloud, Microsoft cloud, etc allowed because of hipaa laws).
Then I realized how much I love using mixbus to mix and wish that the air had more ram...I did change the ssd though, there's an adapter you can get so that you can use an m.2 ssd in the air instead of apple's proprietary format, so I was able to get a 256gb ssd for $89 for it rather than the $229 for the air format.
But I'm not excited about buying a new mac anytime soon when what I have is working, so I hope it continues to work for many years. I'm trying to spend money on music equipment that will work for a long time now, such as workhorse mics, etc. I just got a set of headphones for mixing (akg q702) with a generous gift card I received rather than go for a shiny new iPad since my other headphones have served faithfully for 14 years and still going...so im having a tough time "investing" in anything with a cpu right now (before the security issue was reported).
The best thing about the superdrive on my 2011 was that you could remove it and put in a second HD for all your samples.
I have a 2012 Mac Book Pro 15” for work. It was used 8 hours a day for development work, then I switched over to more management functions the last 18 months before I retired. So it got used all day, every day. Runs beautifully. Putting an SSD into it would make it even better.
My MacBook Pro was the last one that didn’t even have usb3. I cashed it earlier in the year earlier last year (keep forgetting it is a new year) when I needed the money and noticed I hadn’t used it once since I got the iPad Pro Enormous. But, when I was using it, it handled almost everything required with no problems.
I had maxed out the ram and put an SSHD 1TB drive in (which to be frank behaved exactly like an ordinary HD, it felt to me) but because I also had an i7 sandy bridge Hackintosh up and running, I didn’t need a MacBook that hadn’t been opened for half a year.
The Hackintosh is now de-macOS’ed, and is Linux only, but I have another smaller machine that I use for Linux, so that box is now becoming redundant (and too big). Might just do it all again with Raspberry Pi’s next time.
I just bought a brand new 15 inch MacBook Pro 2017. It’s amazing.
Than i might ask you too how you find the touch bar and giant trackpad in combination with Logic or Garage Band (if you use one of these).
And is there really an upgrade in performance to older ones (if you had one before).
What about he fans and the macbook getting fast very hot and throttle. I heard about this but i have no problem on my 2013 version mostly and the fans even never kick in beside i render an audio file with oversampled reverbs and stuff.
I already have usb-c SSD´s.
I really felt in love with the space grey macbooks......doesn´t make them better in any way of course but they are the best looking Apple products so far.
I also heard the GPU, even the better one, is still a bit lame for things like Final Cut Pro or even gaming (what i wouldn´t do anyway much).
There is also a difference between the 2.8Ghz and 2.9 or 3.1Ghz the 2.8 has 6MB L3 cache and the others 8MB.
Not sure if that would help for audio. I also heard that the upgrade from the 2.9 to 3.1 might not worth it since it is really not much and they anyway throttle after a while down to quite the same.
That means my wish configuration at the moment would be the Space Grey 15" touch bar with the better GPU, 2TB SSD, 2.9Ghz i7 which costs a crazy €4739 at Apple. The best price i saw here (Germany) is €4329 which is a good amount less but still crazy as hell. But it´s all or nothing in my case.
Agree with your config Cib. It is just horribly silly money for a machine compromised by Johnny Ive's fetishes.
I got the base model 2017 15" space grey, it's been more than fast enough for anything I've needed. I don't think you need to get the CPU upgrades personally, the base one can handle HUGE projects I've found with plenty of power to space. The space grey is awesome looking, I was hooked on that too.
Mine's very quiet too FWIW, I think I mentioned that in my initial review. Definitely runs a LOT cooler and quieter than my 2014 MBP did.
Yes. But then a maxed out Surface Book 2 or other powerful notebooks are not soooo much cheaper.
Also while it sounds really expensive (because it is) i get personally more out of it than 4 maxed out iPads
All these devices are too expensive for just a hobby but then other crazy people spend even more on their crazy hobbys. Whatever makes us happy.
The smallest version i might could live with would be the same specs but just the 512GB which cost also €3299 at Apple but a much better €2819 at a reseller i trust. Still not cheap and 512GB might not enough.
Agree with all that. I couldn't make do with 512GB though. My 2011 has a 512GB SSD that I put in and a 1TB 7200 HD that I put in in place of the SuperDrive. They're full.
I don't know if I'll every be able to afford the MBP that I want but I certainly won't be buying one until this SPECTRE fiasco is resolved.
I imagine that whatever Apple has ordered to put in the next iteration will be compromised as well, so it is probably going to be the iteration after that has a CPU without the problem.
So 2-3 years to go maybe.
But then we should buy no new computing device in the next 2-3 years maybe then. And then there might be found the next cpucalypse
Maybe i get my C64 back or even the Commodore C16 plus 4 with datasette
The C64 was so great and all the games. Even the Turrican soundtrack is still awesome.
If people drop buying maybe they’ll have to stop charging 5 times the going rate for SSDs to tempt us back.
Wait ... was that a pig I saw? Flying?
Sorry to bump this but a question to users of the Macbook pro 2017. Is the force touch polyphonic (like 3D touch on iPhones) or does it only accept one pressure at a time? Can´t really find a clear answer about this.
Why pay the Apple markup for a laptop? With the ipad we have no choice-that's where the developers are. But for a laptop there are plenty of great options that don't require paying Apple through the nose.
Good question! I don't even know how I would test that to be honest.
I use a core I7 MacBook Pro mid-2012 (the last upgradable MacBook) upgraded to the maximum possibilities, 2TB of storage, 1TB SSD for macOS, 1Tb SSD for windows (removed the optical drive and the awful hard drive), 16 GB of RAM. Everything works perfectly. The last Mac/PC I’ll ever buy as my iPad Pro does 90% of my daily/professional needs already.
Cons: The screen.
The processor?...maybe, It depends on very specific workflows as Intel hasn’t done much in terms of raw performance in like 5-6 years.
No GPU?...same, it depends on what you do.
No touchbar?...hahahahaha...
No touchscreen?... personal preference, personally I hate touchscreens on laptops.
I’m not convinced by the latest generations of MacBooks... something fails (there are lots of complaints about them, the keyboard fails, the screen fails, the SSD fails, etc...) and then... what I’m supposed to do? (I’m in a country with no apple presence). At least I can open mine and replace things easily.
Don’t buy a surface book, if you go windows there are tons of more powerful options for the same or even less price. Why a surface book? Just because Microsoft made it? Don’t buy into the hype. As overpriced as MacBooks and on the windows ecosystem fortunately there are lots of choices.
With this tool maybe:

I think we have/had the same model...maybe... or you had an older one as I think mine does have USB3... SSHD means you used a hybrid drive (part SSD, part HDD)?. If that’s right then it probably felt the same as the old drive, like you mention. The SSD it’s only used for the essential parts of the system and some of the most used apps and files, the HDD handles the rest.
With a regular SSD the difference it’s HUGE for me.
I made a test before and after installing my SSD (980 GB xtreme Pro SSD from SanDISK, 500 GB HDD 5400rpm from Samsung that came with the MacBook)
Counting till Logic Pro was fully opened after turning the computer on:
SSD - 30 seconds.
HDD - a little over 4 minutes.
Because i won‘t leave Logic and my favorite synth P900 (since it‘s mac only)
I don‘t get warm with Abelton Live or other DAW‘s and Logic offers the best tools for me as well, free updates etc. So i‘m willing to stay there for a higher hardware price.
IOS is no option as well since it‘s lacking so much tools i use. And the tools are there are still far away from what i‘m used now.
So macbook and iPhone (but it’s my last iPhone as well) combo for now still.
