  • Wait for NS2 Obsidian! Can‘t be too long now..

  • iWavestation, Roland iOS Soundcanvas and BS-16i to name a few.

  • There are also orchestral string, Mellotron, harpsichord, etc. sample apps.

  • FM Player, Syntronik, and GarageBand. There’s 3 really good free suggestions for you. :)

Wrong comment section. Haven’t learned how to delete a post yet

  • I was off-track a bit - thought you were looking for ones that can be loaded with samples for synthesis...

I initially thought the same. @breilly Are you looking for sample players or synthesizers that can load samples? If the former, I'd add Thumbjam and Sampletank to the current good suggestion pool.

Not very similar to IM1, but maybe interesting for you:

Sampletank (good sounds available, not too much room for edits), Beatmaker 2, Beatmaker 3 (with the right iAPs), Neo Soul Keys (with All-Synth iAP), Caustic 3 (with its module PCMSyth), Yamaha Synth & Dr Pad (it's free!), Zmors Modular if you want to start from scratch

    (to name a few - iM1 isn't bad)

You mention examples of 3 different kinds of generators...

Sample based, (Thumbjam), not strictly speaking a synth. Thumbjam is on the top shelf on this category

a synth “player” (Synthmaster) (which includes a full synth engine, but doesn’t expose its parameters to the user)

and a wavetable synth (iM-1) which uses single cycle waves in various combination and configurations to make sounds)

There’s tons of each type in iOS...above are lots of good ideas, and there’s more!

How about universal AU apps that are wavetable synths? I'm not aware of any...

  • Alchemy is still the best in this area.

Unfortunately, Alchemy is no longer a viable plugin option...

I’m not either, except that other wavetable type that includes the PPG stuff, WaveGenerator, WaveMapper etc which are technically also sample based but... (either way, top shelf, all of them

Using Sunvox as a sound module is another way to go, $6 gets you into quite an amazing toy box with deep samplers that are also stackable, and ship with tons of examples, and tons on the forums. A user on their forums built a full set of orchestral sample instruments using the Sonatina instruments, available for free. Sunvox also plays aif and ogg samples and XI sample instruments...
