FabFilter Pro L2 is coming for Auria Pro: Will you buy/upgrade?
The link below to the Auria forum is from the new Pro L2 thread, with @richardyot asking Rim when will it finally arrive. Rim says it’s in the new 2.17 beta and it’s been submitted to Apple. The upgrade price for existing Pro L owners is said to be $19.99, new I imagine it keeping to the $39.99 level like the last “new” FF addition Pro R.
If you have Pro L will you upgrade? Does this new version make any Pro L hold outs chirp up and finally bite?
I’m attaching the FabFilter debut video overview as it goes through the upgrades pretty well. I will probably upgrade at $19.99 but for the task of limiting, and as well as Pro L does perform, I do have second thoughts about just how much better it can get. Any thoughts?

Not certain my ability (let alone my ears) will really get much more out of this excellent piece of software, but then I guess that's why I need to watch the video and see what justifies the 20 on top of what I already have. I sincerely hope so
Quality stuff I’m sure but for a filthy amateur such as myself it would be lost on me.
Truth be told I deleted Auria some time ago to free some space and I’ve sort of got used to the immediacy of Cubasis/AB/AUM. I do miss the FF plugs tho.
Maybe I’ll swing back at some point.
At some point, I will for sure buy it out of curiosity to hear what it can do and brand loyalty. But I’ve just finished mixing and mastering with the Pro-L my first album on my own, so it’ll be a a little bit before I’ll actually need it.
This is why Fab Filters provide the likes of us with truck loads of excellent presets. No one in RTM is a sound engineer, but we can all hear.
I'll definitely be buying it, for the LUFS metering alone.
I have tried one day to compare all existing limiters on iOS (at least those I am aware of). I was surprised to see that most of them are equivalent in terms of enhancing the song but all of them had a tendency to flatten too much the dynamic...all of them but one. Pro-L is an alien in the effects we have. It really does magic. So yes, I will for sure buy the Pro-L2 and keep putting magic in my process

According to today’s rate the upgrade is £14.14. Will the exchange rate be honoured this time, or will almost twenty dollars become almost twenty pounds.
If they get their aliasing noise figures significantly lower, it will be worth the price.
You may not notice that in the final stage of the mix if you use a lot of distorted sources anyway, but such a leveling limitier can adjust 'impression' and dynamic balance of single tracks almost effortlessly, making the mix process much easier.
I'm used to Saw Studio's Levelizer (counterpart of the PC version of Pro-L) which has 40dB (!) better figures in this domain, but you clearly hear the distortion if you push the plugin hard... with clean sources.
The reason for this approach is that it saves a track compressor (and adjustment of attack-release times), if it's about loudness balance.
For (effects) pumping stuff a compressor is the way to go, of course.
In the end it turned out to be my most used plugin.

Here’s the “blunt mastering engineer” version of why to buy Pro-L 2 you won’t find on their webpage...
-Linphase oversampling. I mean, if you feed your limiter a turd, Pro-L 2 will still give you a louder-sounding turd, but now the effect will be clearer and more transparent-sounding.
-Finally offering EBU R128 metering (LUFS) instead of being stuck with Bob Katz’s konfusing krummy K-Metering system. That alone is worth the extra $19.99 to upgrade it.
-True peak limiting! No more intersample peaks causing your consumer-grade DAC to output shite distortion and clipping.
This can’t come soon enough for me at any rate.

Regarding the grace period - that probably only applies to the desktop version. There's no mechanism to offer a grace period on iOS.

AFAIK the only deal is the half-price offer for those who have already bought the original Pro L. If they find a way to offer a grace period free upgrade then I'm happy to be wrong.

But even at the expected rate, this is still looking like a decent price for very good software.
Good price, and hopefully they will let us have both - that is, Pro L and Pro L2 working side by side. Why? Because L2 has a different workflow: even its metters have a different behavior. Also, Pro L is already great: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
Not a thread de-railer, more like a sidecar: I’m a little curious what the upgrades are going to be for Auria this time? (Yes I will buy L2, fabfilter is like crack to me!)
The more presets I can get from Auria the better, because I don’t trust my own ears very much.
@NoiseHorse I thought the same thing, is this just going to be an update to facilitate Pro L2's addition or are there some other changes/improvements as well?

This is the release notes thread from Auria's forum showing what was added & fixed since v1. I learned from the desktop days to go through info like this to see if there are functions implemented that I didn't even know existed in a piece of software with a long version history.
Going through it I see Auria Pro is pretty damn complete for me but I do have a few things I would like to see added. The marker system improved or another section on the timeline added for making arrangement tags (verse, chorus, v2, etc) would be so great.
A quick function to split stereo tracks into two mono tracks & vice versa would be cool as well.
Like I said nothing monumental, just tid bits here and there.

But VAT is not Apple, it’s HM Gov. I remember when VAT first came in. They literally just made it up one year, an excuse to grab more money from us by making things cost more than they actually did. Effectively, an officially endorsed racket.
I wonder, if we can switch to the US App Store, and buy stuff there without paying VAT? Sounds way too easy to even be possible.
HMRC set the rules...Apple are supposed to pay, and have avoided it...like many other companies have tried..and made threats of moving offices if not allowed to get away with it.
If we have to pay, then so should they.
