Auria Pro latency issue

Hello there. Rarely post cos I feel such a novice but I’m totally stuck with an Auria Pro problem and whilst WML support has been enthusiastic they’ve not helped and now I feel I can’t use AP for any sort of midi. I have an iPad Pro, big one, first generation IOS 11.2.6, running Auria Pro upgraded from LE. I have erased Auria and started from scratch. The problem I have is that even when I start a new project after a full reboot, once I start working on a midi track I can input a few notes, then when I do something fairly minor, perhaps edit a velocity or change an instrument (the last time was in Lyra) the latency is cut and the play back of the notes starts to lag. The difference is audible not visual, ie the notes are correct on the screen but play with a noticeable delay compared to a metronome or audio track. This is reproducible across projects. When I check the latency in settings it say 512 but currently using 470. A similar reduction occurs at smaller latencies.

I understand WML explanation that it would appear that an app is open in the background, ghosting, and is hogging the latency causing the problem. The trouble is I can’t find it! It even happens when I do a full reboot. I don’t get this with any other app, and have even returned to Cubasis (having lost faith during the great Undo Button Trouble of days gone by). Is anyone else getting this? I don’t want to desert AP having invested so much £ in it but it’s just no useable at the moment.

Any advice gratefully received

  • Are you using an audio interface when this happens? iOS is prone to having weird latency increases as you work, the standard trick is to plug/unplug something into the headphone jack of the iPad.

  • No, no interface. Will try the headphone jack thing. Thank u

Weird, but worked. And many thanks. Shame support didn’t know about that, but they did try to help. I’ve been using the lightning port headphones from my new phone recently and so I presume that’s why it has started to happen. Thanks as always!

Right, well that will be it. It's not an Auria issue, but an iOS issue. I get it all the time even in Audioshare if I'm using an audio interface, so I've got into the habit of just quickly plugging and unplugging some headphones into the iPad or iPhone headphone socket before I get started.

  • PS - you might want to let WML know about this.

  • Actually this thread has just made me realise anyone on an iPhone 7/8/X is totally screwed...

Let's hope that the rumours about the next gen iPads not having headphone jacks aren't true either, otherwise we'll all be stuck with that stupid latency problem.

Good point. Do you know if this happens with Cubasis?

I'm pretty sure it can happen in any app. On my iPhone I get it when simply recording into Audioshare with a USB mic. My phone is still on iOS 10, so it's possible that it's been fixed in iOS 11 to be fair. My iPad is on 11.2 and I haven't encountered the issue there recently.

I get more into panic, as I am loosing my iPhone 6 soon and will get an iPhone 8.

Maybe Apple does not really know about this bug?

@crouchie Did you report back to them?

I did let Corey at WML know about the fix. Is a bit of a worry eh?

  • @richardyot Awesome. I don’t even use Auria Pro, but I am still going to benefit from that bit of knowledge you have passed on to the rest of us. Glad I popped in on this topic. B)

  • Don’t know if it’s of interest but the headphone jack trick only work for me if I remove the lightning port headphones. If they are plugged in the latency remains affected

  • My bluetooth headphones cause all kind of chaos with music apps unfortunately, luckily they have a cord included. I have also discovered by chance that they need to be unplugged and replugged on occasion when things get squirrely.
