The Perfect App

As the title says, are there any apps out there that you think are perfect? That is to say, is there a music making app that you wouldn’t change, that cannot be improved?

As this is all subjective, and in the spirit of keeping this thread a positive one, could any contributors please refrain from highlighting what they feel are negative points in other people’s selections. :)

Comments

  • My first would be Egoist. The UI, the workflow and the sheer usefulness I glean from this one app make it my perfect app. I use it in almost everything I do; from idea generation to remixing.

  • Another of mine would be AUM. Infinitely useful and it has changed the way I work and generate what I like to call “music”.

Then there’s Zeeon. Initially I had some issues with the UI, but that all fades away when you really start using it. Nothing else matters with a good synth.

  • Soundprism Pro.

    I wouldn't change it.

  • +1 for AUM and Zeeon. Also Patterning, and I think probably several more.

    Perfect:

Samplr, Loopy, Nave, Troublemaker, ElasticDrums, Zeeon, Effectrix, Fugue Machine, Turnado, SoundScaper, WaveMapper, Patterrning, DRC, iDS-10, AC Sabre, Audiobus, AudioShare and AUM

    Almost perfect:

SNAP Drum machine - needs velocity
Blocs Wave - needs midi control and some effects
iKaossilator - needs some extra sounds, preferably percussion and weird sample stuff
    Model 15 - I need a faster iPad
Animoog - let me put my own audio in as a timbre
TC-11 - needs fewer choices for setting up control in the patches
Thesys - I need tiny fingers and better eyesight
Yamaha Synth Book (AN 2015) - I would love to control what goes into the orb

Of course it doesn´t exist but the closest would be some of my oldest for me. ThumbJam and NanoStudio.
But since iOS 11 i lost one of those....doh´.
Animoog is worth a mention too.
    Mitosynth is another one.
BUT Alchemy was the best thing ever.....did i say that i regret to update to iOS 11?!?

    animoog
    knave
    fieldscaper
    soundscaper
    ivcs3

  • NeoSoulKeys Studio
    Poison-202
    Facebook (I'll get my coat...)

  • Ditto Neo soul keys studio
    Also would add FAC Chorus
Jubal Flute and just to be a little different Ruckers 1628

  • Yeah, I forgot about the FAC apps. Nothing could make them better than they already are.

  • Mitosynth
    Bebot
    AUM

It is a constant go to for me. Running it on PC is amazing with multiple instances so... doh, this is the only reason I would say that being AU would make it perfect for me. It is so awesome with multiple instances heh.

  • AUM
    AudioShare
    TC-Data

  • There's no such thing as a perfect app. It's clearly evident from reading these forums. Every app has something that the other doesn't have, and that's all people seem to talk about around here... the endless feature requests that take over every thread about any specific app that's been talked about. So while 5 people can say any specific app is perfect, there's 10 people for every 5 who will chime in with their wishes and suggestions.

  • It’s just opinions. Sheesh! :p

  • Plectrum

It’s so beautiful in its streamlined simplicity

Then again, this thread is looking for subjective opinions, not cold hard facts. Context is 9/10ths of the law.

    Agreed.

  • The magnificently stupendous, isequence hd. FLSM and Egoist arent far behind.

  • Think an app needs to be awfully simple/single purposed to have a shot at perfect. For me, several effect apps are perfect. And I guess by 'perfect', I mean "does what it's supposed to do very well" and is "feature complete" in that adding anything wouldn't help it. For instance, I love love SoundPrism Pro but often wish I could set different velocity levels for the left and right side.

Try this setup to set different velocities for bass and chords coming out of SoundPrism. You need Audiobus 3 and MidiFlow Limiter to do this setup.

Start by sending SP into AB midi, splitting the bass and chord midi inputs.

In SP, hit the house button, open the Preferences, then go into the Expression section. In here, set your max velocity, or the louder of the two velocities since we can only use one velocity per voice in SP.

Next in AB, put Midiflow Limiter on the track you want to have the lower velocity. I put it on the Chords track, so I will have soft Chords and booming Bass.

In Midiflow Limiter, I set the switch to have a fixed velocity since SP doesn’t output varied velocity anyway. Then I set the velocity really low to a value of 2.

By hooking up Midiflow monitor like so, you can verify the velocity values are correct. I had set the velocity in SP to 114, and with Midiflow Limiter I set the Chords velocity to 2. So Bass has velocity of 114, Chords have velocity of 2.

One final note, you can run both AB midi tracks to the same synth, or different synths. Here I have both driving a single instance of Phasemaker.

  • AUM - For what it is and does, it’s perfect.
Turnado - MIDI knobby fun every time...perfect.
NeoSoul Keys - I love funk/jazz and this is just..perfect.
FAC Maxima - adds to almost everything
DrumJam would be perfect if it would sync right with Ableton link.

@CracklePot this SoundprismPro tip is awesome! Thank you! Haven’t used this app in ages...

  • @Scottzilla82 Thanks. :) Glad you found it helpful. B)

  • Thank you for taking the time to post that @CracklePot.

  • @syrupcore No problem at all. I tried to keep it basic and thorough for anyone else that might find it useful, but I doubt I told you anything you didn’t already know. :)

  • +1

  • AudioShare, Egoist, Altispace and Samplr. Samplr needs an update desperately but damn is it still relevant after several years.
