Prophet 8 on iOS?

Was watching a clip of this guy who calls himself Rival Consoles — I love his records. My gallons and gallons of half-finished semi-ambient jams — well, let's say they're in the same family.

Apparently the Prophet 8 is his main synth. (Obviously, there's lots of effects and manipulation in a DAW.) But what is the closest approximation to the Prophet 8 on iOS? I gather the iProphet is, but that seems to be pretty much ignored by Arturia. Anything else come close?

  • Love him too. Have watched this video at least 2-3 times. I don’t think his sound is that prophet specific. Have a few friends that have this ‘08 so have jammed with it. I do like it but his thing is more the fx he runs it through. I think mono/poly could get u close to the sounds he goes for. The only artist that really makes me gas for this prophet is james blake, who featured it quite heavily in live performances kind of like a synthy piano.

Jame Blake, yes. And of course, the Mono/Poly. That's the one Korg app lately that I've not delved into. Bought it in a rush with other apps, and it's kind of dense, isn't it?
Was just going through @jakoB_haQ 's very good tutorial.

  • To be honest i haven’t put it through the paces yet either but it sounds fantastic.

  • Twin 2’s another one to be aware of. It’s often forgotten, locked away inside Auria Pro, but it’s one of the best imho. Not exactly a Prophet-modelled synth, but there are some ‘Prophet’ patches for it, plus great filter options, a fancy delay section and it’s a modulation super-genius. I expect it could get you very close.

I’m surprised there aren’t more Dave Smith-inspired synths on iOS.

  • love twin2 as well

  • The first track on the new Rival Consoles album is BALLIN. The rest of the album is pretty good but couldn’t compare.

I've often wondered where the iOS Prophet synths are. The only one I know about is an Arturia one (?) that doesn't seem to get talked about much.

There used to be one called Professor but it is no longer in the App Store

I read on another thread that you're integrating a macbook in your setup? Grab U-he Repro 5...Worth its wait in gold for those kind of sounds. Don't know how close it is to Prophet 8 particularly but it's killed my gas for all hardware 'standard' kind of polys except Oberheim.. <Which I'm hoping Berhinger will be sorting for me ;)

+1 for repro-5, but check the demo to see how you like it and how it runs on your system. It’s very cpu hungry. I have an old MacBook Pro (mid-2009) and it can hit 100% playing a 3-note chord with a complex pad, so I’ve pretty much put it on the back burner until I upgrade. Hive (another u-he synth) is fantastic too, and lightweight (but it’s not a prophet).

Hoping a dev will drop by this thread to tell us they’re about to unveil something, but that’s just my wishful thinking (apeSoft?)

There is also iWavestation of course..

I’m no expert on synths, synthesis or synth history (good morning @u0421793) but the wavestation is basically a DSI synth, right? Dave Smith’s team did most of the research, theory, concept and prototypes with the Prophet VS, then sold to Korg and that’s why it has the joystick and it’s different to everything else they do?

Mainly, when I think of Prophets I think of Prophet 5s and X-mod, John Carpenter and Talking Heads. I’m surprised that no iOS developer’s really taken that on. Seems like there’d be a market for it.

I like the Arturia Prophet. It makes some grizzly ballin bass sounds that no one else can.
    It’s a prophet after all.

You can buy Prophet in the AudioEvolution DAW, as an instrument, with lots of other classic synths.

Don't forget Steve Winwood! "While You See a Chance" intro helped kindle a lifelong attraction to synths in my grade school heart.

Here’s an interesting article on the story of the Prophet VS, which unfortunately is on horrible horrible LinkeDin.

Interesting stuff. It’s left me wanting a huge modular system, and also a time machine (I suspect that huge modular systems are time machines). Thanks for that.

  • thanks for this! always interesting to read about dev work.

Done. May 12 in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Let me know if any of you will be there.

  • Hehe. Enjoy :))

  • I always think of Prophet 5 when I think Prophet. Ya know, luftballoons and so on. Had a pal who had one and it was just such an incredible, brilliant sound. I remember him repairing the contacts often...
