Should I keep Layr ?

Purchased two days ago and not really impressed. Exploring the (not so many) presets, It doesn't sound that much massive to me and I'm thinking of a refund. But so many people like this app ! Did I miss something ?

  • If you checked Brice‘s cinematic presets and do not think it sounds massive... get a refund, I don’t know what will. I was blown away and jaw dropped when I fired them up.
    Did you use headphones?

  • I was exacty the same when I bought it a couple of weeks ago. It's a relatively expensive synth in iOS terms and the first few dozen presets didn't sound like anything I couldn't do, and better, with numerous other synths I already owned. Like @david_2017 says, there are some much better presets further down the list. But mostly I am impressed with the arp.

I would say, if you're only interested in presets then Layr is a bit of a hard sell. Although there should be a whole bunch of new ones if the thread @richardyot is running bears fruit.

On the other hand, I prefer to roll my own sounds and am finding it interesting, not blown away interesting, but worth keeping for my own purposes. I see it more as a very flexible groove box at the moment, I don't think the synth engine is hugely interesting in itself but as part of the bigger whole and with nthe umber of layers that can be fired up, I can see it becoming part of my future musical output.

  • Yes I did. I'm a bit lost with this synth, it's quite different from the other synths I have. Maybe th'at's why I'm not ! I'm checking this presets out tonight. Thank you for your answer, I know where to investigate !> @david_2017 said:

I had the same feeling after exploring a bunch of presets but not the arp ones. Let's try then ! Thanks.

  • I’m guessing you’ve probably been loading up the “instruments” (on the left) and not the “performances” (on the right). This synth is all about building up layers upon layers and creating a whole “performance rig” layed out on your keyboard.

  • "Should I keep Layr ?"
    ....Yes.

  • @Etrehumain Perhaps you tried to load instruments (top-left corner) and not performances (top-right corner).

I just roughly counted 400 performance presets (250 of them in the Brice banks) - in my opinion your ‚not so many presets’ statement is not justified.

  • i think Layr has huge potential and rewards time spent. Love that it is now AU and the new mod matrix adds more flavour. Sure, I would like some randomization but that’s just my own limitations and me being lazy.

    Definitely a keeper!

  • +1 to making sure you preview Brice’s banks, and I would add that many of layr’s patches require you to hold down keys for a while to hear the best stuff

Layr fills a need that I have had since z3ta+ crashed and burned, so I LOVE it. If you don’t keep it that’s fine but I hope folks will either: (A) devote the time and effort to learn it or (B) give it some time for updates and a growing patch bank list before giving up on it.

With almost every synth app out there you have a couple three envelopes and LFO’s and you end up having to share them as modulation sources no matter how many destinations the synth might have. Layr doesn’t suffer any such limitation and it allows for so much more

  • I have deleted many synths I’ve never used. I personally would never ask for a refund though on a synth that is so new and works well. If it didn’t work that’s fine, but getting refunds for apps that just don’t fit my style is kind of harsh on developers IMO.

I’m definitely not having a go or making a personal dig. It’s just my opinion on apps that really are very cheap considering. The big PC / MAC priced synths usually have other ways you can demo first and when people say we should be paying the same, then I will expect Apple to give us a way to test them out first. At iOS price levels though, I feel no need as I still feel I win more than I lose ;)

As I said, just an opinion and not meant to cause any offence :)

  • Oh forgot one cool thing about LayR
You can implement it into an AUM session as AU and since this synth has a build in keyboard you can give a bassy pad the root Note 5th and octave, add another instance and play chords with it (in AUM - it only has one keyboard right :)). I know no other synth that comes with AUv3 keyboard

+1 for everyone saying you should check out the Brice presets.

The "drifting piano" preset @7:15 sold me on the entire synth.

  • Yes is the answer, the reason willl become apparent somewhere down the track.

  • To me it’s the new ZT3A as an AUv3. I’ve been really digging into this amazing synth and the sounds are deep, warm and beyond! I did change the color scheme to the lighter one to help when editing but I really like the dark one too. It’s a synth that will reward you once you look beyond the surface.

  • Layr is the deepest synthesizer on ios. like it's not even close.

    Period!

Way too deep for me, but I am loving the presets and at the end of the week the layr soundfest of the month will bring even more presets and performances

And Andy promised down the road something like a randomization feature, if i remember right something „way more than a simple randomization“ :)

Think there are plenty of contenders that would disagree but it does have a few interesting twists and turns.

It is deep....but depending on what you want to do not the deepest ;)
    Want more LFO? Mitosynth.
Modular madness? Model 15 and even Zeeon. Audulus.
Alchemy is the deepest maybe (but just behind it´s player engine).
But yeah, i like what i hear from LayR and some of the arps especially sounds really nice!

  • Worth it just for the Brice presets, which are some of the best sounds you can get from an iPad.

Which makes it very difficult to use even at a superficial level. Since the recent update I can't even get it to open the factory presets. I probably could figure it out, but shouldn't need to have to read a manual for something so basic. I also have never really liked the sound of this app. But I am obviously in the minority.

  • Do not despair...help is on the way for this great synth :)

    Try.......

    1. Loading the standalone app first, then the AU.
    2. Backing up your own presets then uninstalling / reinstalling.
    3. Contacting LivingMemory.

Agreed. Funny business (and a great nod to both Dev and Brice), but I would have bought the thing just for Brice's banks.

It’s amazing how a decent bunch of presets can push you off the fence. I bought Synthscaper for one preset (Timewaves) because it sounds like Gong. Saying that there are loads of other good ones, and 10% of my randomiser clicks yield usable results too.

To be fair the other presets in LayR are good too, and I’m a sucker for an arp.

  • Try the presets with various velocities - I discovered a whole new level of sounds by striking keys hard etc in many presets that were not being triggered by just playing the a few notes of each preset. It is so musical, expressive. Many patches are quite vangelis like with all the texture and layers, but in just one patch!

  • It’s subjective in many ways but in terms of features, sound, design and connectivity, to my ears and eyes I’ve not witnessed something richer and more layered (pun intended?) with more bang for buck. I would pay twice what it costs, it’s worth that and more especially after auv3 addition.

If presets are your thing, and they weren’t my thing, that is until I met LayR. Holy shit those presets are sick and are not even iap.

There is a learning curve with LayR but effort and experimentation are heavily rewarded with this one. I hope Andy Bull continues to develop it and move it over the top.

Where did you hear those? It sounds interesting, but Google reveals nothing.

  • I’m in the anti-crowd. To repeat from another thread, Brice’s performance banks are so impressive and fully fleshed out that it would feel like stealing to actually use them on tracks. I wish I would’ve spent $20 and just got a full brice album instead.

It wouldn’t be stealing, but I know what you’re saying. My performance presets—particularly the sequence presets—were included more as a way to say hey, look what this app can do. But if they spawn a new track then of course that’s great. The 288 instrument presets I made are there for you to roll your own performances.....should you be inclined to do so ;)

  • Finally a thread that gives me some reasons to NOT buy a synth for once.
Not that Ive really been lead astray by the hype on here, there just too much good stuff to devote time to.
