Question for Yamaha MD-BT 01 owners
I just got one of these from santa, have been trying for 2 days to get the thing working. I have the utility app as well as many other Bluetooth midi apps and it shows up fine in all of them but neither my cme Xkey or fcb 1010 will send midi to anything. The Yamaha onboard light is red with occasional green flashes, is this normal? Also I updated successfully to the latest firmware, hoping that this doesn't require iOS 11 or is there anything I have overlooked.
About to return it but would love to get it working if possible!
Thanks in advance

Have you tried using Midimittr and checking that it sees the dongle as a client and that it connects?
If it is flashing red and green it is being powered by your hardware.( which is a good start as some newer hardware won't power it ).
Also, Try it in gadget or some other apps ( can't remember now, maybe GarageBand)that will recognise without the need for Midimittr
It doesn't require iOS 11, but does work with it.
Thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunately I have tried it with over 20 apps that recognise the device, some like Animoog have indicator lights that show midi activity, these do not react in any way when I play the hardware. I have also tried it on an iPhone 5c with Animoog and it's exactly the same situation.
I think it's time to return it and hope the replacement works out.
Used it with my WX-11 wind controller and it worked out of the box, without any special app. Recognized on both my iPad 4 and iPhone 6s Plus as a Bluetooth MIDI device (say, in Animoog or Seaboard 5D). Once an app connected to it, it’s available as a MIDI source anywhere.
So, maybe yours is somehow faulty or there’s something in the MIDI output settings of your controllers?
Definitely something wrong with it, can't find anyone online having any issues. It's not a midi channel thing since setting to omni still doesn't send notes or any other midi data.
Have used 2 iOS devices with 2 different midi controllers that are supported and everything looks perfect but no midi flowing in or out.
Ok I just tried mine in Animoog without using midimittr
If you would like to try the following to double check ?
So , first, Bluetooth On in Settings.
Turn on keyboard .Yamaha bt01 starts flashing.
Open animoog
Setup
Bluetooth MdBt01 Not Connected. Touch that and it says Connecting...Connected
MdBT 01 stops flashing..constant red.
Close that box in Animoog
Md BT01 appears as Midi In option in Animoog. Select that.
Play a note. In light in Animoog flashes.
Light on adapter flashes also as each not is played.
This is the exact process that works for Animoog.
I've given you this step by step as I found the adapter fiddle to setup with different combinations.
Animoog is easier as it does not require a 3rd party app.
If your adapter doesn't stop flashing after Connected is displayed, I would say it is faulty.
Hope his helps.
.
It does help, thanks for taking the time to look at this!
Everything is good apart from the above, no midi activity light in Animoog and the Yamaha also doesn't flash when playing notes.
But Animoog sees it? Man that IS a weird one.
Got a replacement from amazon, new one works perfect from the box. Think I will be getting a few more of these!
Good stuff!
Can anyone please tell me if the Yamaha MD-BT01 will work and still get the required power if only connected to a midi out ?
I want to use this for a few gigs connected to a rock band 3 keytar (yes, you may laugh) , it only has a midi out though so I was wondering.
Thanks.

This thread might help @stumax

I have had success using just the midi out (cme xkey and behringer fcb foot controller) but have heard that some devices won't work with the Yamaha.
Akai EWI 5000 works via midi out only.
It depends on whether the device actually sends power to the midi port or not.
One useful tool is the Midi Wrench App on the iPad. For me to get the MD-BT01 to connect I have to start the BS-16i
App and use the midi settings there. I select Bluetooth Devices and it shows MD-BT01 "disconnected". I touch that device and connects. Then the MD-BT01 sends midi events and appears in the Midi Wrench App.
I'm sure there are other Apps with Bluetooth configs that could be used to trigger the connection request from the iPad.
NOTE: Only the MIDI Ports needed "IN" or "OUT" or both are required. The device gets powered by the port being connected and the other MIDI connector can just hang. I'd like to velco them together tho' to avoid strining that interconnect cable.
Hope this helps. Serach your apps for Bluetooth MIDI setup and look for the MD-BT01 when it's glowing red alternating with green. After it connects it's solid red with flashes for any transmitted MIDI events.
It is my understanding that historically only the MIDI out port is powered (on devices that support this)?
OK awesome, thanks for your comments, it sounds like it should work. Just trying to save the trouble of having to return it if it doesn't.
I'll order it and report back .
Thank you all !
Hey thanks, i'm pretty familiar with the rockband keytar, I used to play it as my main instrument in one of my bands a few years ago - in case it's of interest here's an example -
I used to hook it up wireless to my my macbook via a driver some guy in holland had made, had to launch this via terminal to get it running but it worked a treat ! He was even kind enough to take on a few requests to enable some additional features I was after ...This was the driver - https://www.npmjs.com/package/rbkey-midi
Didn't see any mention of power output on that thread, it's easier to just buy it and test than buy a multimeter so i'll go that way
Anyway another band that I used to play for have asked me to play a couple of festivals with them , first gig for a few years and i'm looking forward to it lots, thought it might be fun to take the keytar along in addition to my trusty nord, then obviously I was thinking hmmm wireless, hmmmm gadget ..
Cheers,
sTu
I've got both and can try it out later.
Ahh cool, thanks very much !
Does not work. Interestingly, the Bluetooth connection is easily made as the MD-BT01 powers on with the correct light showing. But the keyboard itself blinks flashing lights like it's waiting for a connection. No MIDI data is received on iOS device. Sorry.
Yeah my Rockband 3 Fender Mustang midi out doesn't work with the Yamaha bt either.
Thanks a lot for testing it! That’s a shame , sounds a bit odd that it powers up but still doesn’t work !
Now i’m wondering if the quicco mi1 will have the same issue , or the cheap hifing one on eBay ..
I was going to ask if anyone has been able to use this MD BT-01 with low voltage 3.3v MIDI. I’m guessing not because it is not working with the Rockband Keytar and that is on the 3.3v list. I was hoping to use one with my Roland PC-300, but that probably won’t work as it’s 3.3v on the MIDI Out.
Ahh DMan, you’ve helped answer my question....
Looks like the quicco wil work !

Thanks
Update...
I ordered the quicco, it didn't work . Exact the same issue as described with the Yamaha.
I'm beginning to think that the panda audio midibeam (http://www.panda-audio.com/midibeam.php ) might be the only feasible option, not sure if I want to pay that much though
Here’s another one to investigate. From the pic it looks like it has a usb connection as well to recharge battery maybe?

Hey, thanks for that. I did see and consider this too but I’m assuming that this is likely based on the same technology as the Yamaha and quicco, it will likely end with the same result.
I have however managed to bag a second hand alesis vortex wireless keytar, it has class compliant usb so should be all good with the iPad. Actually worked out cheaper than the panda midibeam, plus I get an extra octave which means I might be able to leave the nord at home ...
Next step is either sample the nord in mainstage/autosampler then work out how to play back exs format in iOS , or do it all in gadget ...
I think I can make this work one way or another and it’s gonna be great fun.
Not sure which is going to work out best at this point, exs or gadget , I need to do a bit more research !
Thanks,
sTu
The difference is that one is self powered I believe rather than drawing power from the midi port.....
In the meantime have fun with the keytar
