Getting timpani in GarageBand
My kid was creating something symphonic in GarageBand and asked where she could find a timpani. As far as I know, that doesn’t come with GarageBand on iOS, so I started searching for options. The ideal solution is AUv3 for cleanest integration with the normal GarageBand workflow.
iSymphonic is AUv3 and its Boato IAP has some timpani samples, but the IAP is $17, a bit steep just to get some timpani.
bs-16i is AUv3 and could load a timpani SoundFont, but apparently its AUv3 implementation doesn’t save the SoundFont as part of the session, it just loads whatever SoundFont was loaded most recently.
It appears ThumbJam may have a timpani sound, or something like it, but I haven’t been able to confirm that, and I’m not sure what the experience would be like using that from GarageBand.
What other options exist? Can I somehow import samples? Is there another AUv3 SoundFont player? Should I just go with something that’s IAA? Keep in mind I’m looking for a low-hassle solution that wouldn’t be a workflow speedbump for a kid. Thanks!

ThumbJam Timpani & Timpani roll ,sound fine IMHO
You can import samples by going to the Keyboard instrument and selecting Sampler then New Sample then Import then Audio Files then Browse Files App. Maybe look around at freesound.org to find some samples?
Thanks for confirming the timpani sounds in ThumbJam.
Is it a single sample per instrument, or can you load a sample per pitch?
BeatHawk has a great timpani in the classical percussion pack. Unfortunately, you just missed the sale.
One sample per instrument, repitched as you play the keyboard
Can you use the Taiko drums in GB as a substitute?
Yeah, that was the first thing I asked her. She actually plays in a real taiko group, so maybe she’s biased, but she said no way.
I think the default sf2 timpani in bs-16i is a simple solution. Has a good range of velocity response. I have many soundfonts installed in bs-16i and definitely agree that it should be upgraded to use a specific soundfont in a saved AU preset rather than default to last one loaded. Much like iSymphonic does in its AU. In any case installing bs-16i with just it’s default soundfont should be the simple case for GB.
Thanks for the bs-16i vote. I had kind of written it off but you made me reconsider it. I also didn’t know it came with a timpani. And if we only use that one instrument for now, it’s as if the state saving deficiency doesn’t matter.
Second the beathawk one and I believe one of the imaschine packs have one in there to.
I use AUM and my saved sessions remember the chosen patch (but not the sf2 it came from). There is also an Orchestral Percussion preset that includes an octave of the same timpani at C2-C3 but adds all sorts of great percussion elsewhere on the midi note mapping. I think the same sf2 is included with a few other iOS apps, in particular Gestrument and MultiTrackStudio.
Pretty sure Sampletank's Classical and Cinematic Percussion packs have it too. But I too would recommend Thumbjam/Drumjam and SF2 (with BS-16i, Gestrument or Caustic)
