why even debate it? Some people just love iPhone. @Cib made hundreds of tracks on iPhone only. You spend that much time with it... and yeah, it will always feel better than iPad, at least until you make 200 tracks on iPad. And even then, one will intuitively feel better because the devices are so different.
Same can be said for iPad Mini. Some people love it. If after two years of it being your main tablet (for music and everything else), it will be an awkward adjustment to go to a 9.7 or a 12.9 or a 10.5.
For those who love iPhone workflow, I totally understand the frustration that more apps aren't ported to iPhone well.
For those who love iPad mini, I totally understand the frustration that the latest device is now 3 years old running 4 year old internal hardware (A8 chip and 2GB ram, right?)
Now this is a good point.
debate is defunct the other way too. even if diagonal screen sizes are similar, a 4:3 iPad screen ratio will never fit in the front pocket of your blue jeans. So you have to buy the iPhone. ... (if pocketability is priority)
This is true too, which is why the only logical thing to do is buy one of each size available.
In the eternal debate of which is better, a gorilla or an orange, no one is ever happy.
Except Apple, who will make money regardless.
As a long time lurker, I will say it is interesting to see how the cycles keep repeating, iPhone vs iPad, AU vs standalone, DAW vs AUM/ape/Xueqence etc
My lady and I both make music and are lucky enough to have an SE, iPhone 7 and I pad mini 2 (not going to upgrade the ios on these any further), and an iPhone 8 and iPad 2017.
I like being able to use the full iPad when I can, but that's almost certainly going to be at home, set up in front of the iMac. For working in bed or on the couch, I love the iPad mini, but it is only really up for a sequencer and a couple synths, definitely can't handle any serious session.
The thing that really makes a difference for me though? I always have my phone with me, and will be making beats and loops while waiting in line etc.
Sure, I can't use cubasis on an iPhone, but if I really need to use a DAW, I'll dump my ios loops into Ableton or Logic.
Apps like beathawk, iMaschine and GR-16 are actually easier for me to use, or at least more comfortable, and often those are the same thing when it comes to work flow.
That's what I love about ios. It has increased my music output at least triple fold, and while it could be cool get iLogic or iAbleton, I'm way more interested in doing things I can't do on my Mac.. Or iPad. Because they are not always in my pocket 🤔
Anyways, just my experience, but as someone with a foot in both camps, I see strengths on both sides. If a new iPad mini is released, it will likely have less power and more screenspace than the XS and XR, and seems like another step towards universal apps/AU'S. Then users can decide for themselves, and everybody wins.
As iPad mini4 musician user I will never buy a big iPhone as phone. I’m these kind of buried user by Apple who loves small smarphone, small tablet and reparable macs.

If I buy a big iPhone (the day apps like GroupTheLoop become universal or AUv3) it will be 3 generations older and just to place it inside a (handmade) dock. So the size of my pockers it’s trivial for carry any of those (iPhone or iPad) due I should manage to fit the dock too.
The pockets issue is more related to the price
ATM I don’t feel the mini4 outdated for my workflow but I just use BlocsWave, Garageband and AudioShare. No true AUv3 use, not true looping in the end (and don’t trust iOS whatever the hardware for my live gigs anymore) so I supose my mini4 will end its days inside the focusrite dock in some moment and I will buy more dedicated hardware and bigger flightcases (and thighter jeans
)
No, an iPhone, even the largest iPhone available is not comparable in size to an iPad mini.
It's like claiming that a mouse is almost as large as an elephant.
Here's a picture of an iPhone XS Max next to a iPad mini 2. The difference is HUGE.

And it wouldn't make sense for somebody who wants an iPad mini to buy an iPhone instead that's more than 3X the price, not to mention that there are many music apps that are iPad only, as others have pointed out.
I don't understand how people can use music apps while they are stuffed away in their pocket. Doesn't make sense. GPS or jogging apps, that makes sense but I mean how do you use something like Gadget if you can't see the screen? and I doubt the touch works very well through a pair of pants.
@AudioGus drumpants! of course.
Easy my friend, I use pants ID and 3D pockets touch!!
What a world of wonders!
along with the iPhone in your pocket, one would not be amiss to call it magical pants.
