The quadcore i3 in this new Mac Minis may be faster than older quadcore i5's.

It will especially when it comes to disk performance, 5400RPM drive vs SSD :)
The 'old' 2.2Ghz QuadCore i7 is/was a work-horse, mine is unfortunately 'dead' it couldn't take the heat with both an SSD and regular drive in it :(

The stock 128GB SSD that comes with the new Mini's is barely enough for a full install of Logic Pro X...
But then again get a 128GB FitBit and stick it in an USB slot and move the sound-libraries there, problem solved :)

In 2012 I was able to get a Quadcore i7 Mini w/ 2TB of 7200 HDD and 16 GB of RAM for well under $1000.

I also believe the i3 is less powerful than the i5 and i7. Would be nice if otherwise, but still seriously unimpressed.. Apple charges an extra $800 for a 1TB SSD in the Mini. $800! Double the cost of the entire computer. It should be more like $200. Apple has always overcharged for memory and drives. Now that they are no longer user installable, they are free to gouge as much as they can

Look at this site for example: https://tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-core-i3-8350k-cpu,5304-9.html where you will see that the i3 CPU's are not that sluggish anymore.

  • Passing on this iPad Pro...

It’s unreasonably high for 1tb storage...1700.00 ? Wow MacBook Pro money
    No headphone jack
Not sure I care about it being physically smaller? My 1st gen 12.9” is fine.
    Still 4 gig ram
Changing the port really is getting old as dinosaur shit
    Not into Face ID period
It’ll take a while for apps to need the power it has on iOS, meanwhile for the same money you can have a better platform with better apps. The MacBook Air is cheaper and can run reason and Logic Pro which are superior to many apps in the iOS environment
I don’t want to have to refit all my io devices or buy new ones
Use shitty latent beat headphones or any other audio/Bluetooth crap that sucks
Have to buy a new pencil
Have to buy a new otter box
Oh it’s faster than 92% of laptops, but yet it doesn’t run OS X nor any pro computer apps...so what does it offer me next week...oh, the same apps running the same as before...just fine
Ooh it has Xbox one graphics at 4 -5 times the Xbox one price...laughing out loud this one made me laugh.
Maybe the next iPad Pro will be a serious tool with more ram etc...
This one didn’t live up to the hype.
    Yea i’ll Pass.

    Agreed. It’ll even drive 3 - 4k displays.

    And... it’s got a headphone jack. :)

  • Wondering how I can connect my lighting based Korg PlugKey to the new iPad Pro which has usb-c. I guess they will sell some kind of dongle/adapter. And then another different adapter to use wired headphones. Life is too short for so many dongles... just kidding.

The new iPads look slick upon first glance, but rounded corners for the actual screen itself???

Nice to see the Mac mini get a boost, especially after my not even very old iMac is gathering dirt under the (bleeping) screen. :#

This rounded screencorners may be the silliest thing Apple has ever done, including removing headphone jacket!
I’m so fuckin’ agry after this keynote!
My love for Apple has gone into hateress!!!

  • You’re also basically forced to buy AppleCare (price increased from $99 to $129) as out of warranty repairs on the new 11-inch iPad Pro will cost $499, while repairs on the new 12-inch iPad Pro will cost $649. :o

Yeah, that I use all the time already. Apparently the "." is on the "!" key and the "," is on the "'" key you just can't see them? Weird.

I agree with you but I have no plans on getting one of these for a long time. I’m happy with the 2017 pro.

  • Just ordered mine, pro 12.9. Xmas is coming earlier for me this year. Looking forward to see how the apps look and behave on this big format!

  • If the new curved corners means some apps need shrinking, is the actual area used for the app going to be smaller than the older Pro apps, or will the apps have to be altered to refit anything in the corners?

  • All in all this was a good presentation. Quite a few interesting products to discuss and lust after.

I'm no longer expecting breakthrough innovations in Nth generation incremental product updates, unless they introduce a new product category.

It seems that people who express great disappointment or outrage had very unrealistic expectations of what Apple would do and haven't been paying attention in the last 10 years >:)

And some still keep their hopes...

To me the fact Apple emphatized so much Mainstage in the mac mini part points me two things:
1- They want to sell these new mac mini to workship musicians.
2- They are going to keep Mainstage Logic for mac almost 5 more years. Maybe improve logic control with some features (from garageband which is essentially a logic le for iOS) but that’s all.

Sad but the line they are drawing year after year.

There's really no way for you to tell unless you know the quality of the drive. Historically Apple uses very high speed SSD's with custom controllers creating industry leading performance.

That is the main reason you're paying for it. Or the other 'tax'. Premium stuff. Premium price.

I had to do a double take when I saw how quickly the new 13-inch MacBook Pro duplicated 4.9GB worth of data. It took 2 seconds, which comes out to a rate of 2,519 megabytes per second. That’s insane.

    https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/2018-macbook-pro-benchmarks

There's no way you're gonna get this with a budget SSD.

Same goes for your perspective on the CPU. It's distorted. Plain and simple: the current i3 is faster than an ancient i7.

Expensive? Sure. But new Apple tech is usually a pretty safe investment.

I can attest to this. My wife is still happily using the Late-2010 Macbook Air I bought 8 years ago. It was silly-expensive for a moderately-specced laptop back then but it has turned out to be an amazing investment.

It's the reason I almost never buy the newest stuff. Lower-priced last-gen Apple toys are good enough for me. 😊

I think a DIY ssd upgrade is the way to go. The prices in the real (non Apple) world are coming down all the time and the procedure isn’t all that hard. There’s generally FixIt tutorials that are very easy to follow.

  • I have an unconfirmed feeling (TM) that Apple will close doors on DIY software messing about after iOS 12. They’ve been progressively shutting doors on IPA files access etc. so no going back to previous app versions and the like.

I am very seriously considering freezing one of my iPads on 12...maybe even 11.

  • Stupid question coming up:

Does the Mini have built in WiFi? I’ve seen lots of info about wired network connections but I haven’t got that here. Does it have a built in router like the laptops and iPads?

  • It's shame the headphone jack is gone but I'm not all that bothered.
It's the worst built part of my 12.9 pro 17. I'm always getting a noisy connection from it. But I would have liked to see two usb-c ports. That would have been more pro.

    (Yes)

Mac mini is a nice way to go, especially if you can get one with a fast processor. SSD is now standard. It’s potentially a kick ass little machine. Wish I would have kept my old one which I had decked out with pretty good specs.

    Ah great thank you.

I was hoping for an iMac refresh, but I'm guessing when that comes prices will be hiked up again. This could be an alternative. I see it has USB3 connections - I'm using an external SSD via USB3 on my old Macbook Pro, so I'm guessing it'd work well on this too.

Hmmm...need to check a few benchmarks and reviews but this could replace my ageing Dell Windows desktop.

Get this man a job at Apple please.

  • The radiused screen corners are just a handful of pixels for aesthetics. It's a little weird, and I'd probably be bothered more if it was a 16:9 display, but I don't see it causing an issue with apps.

As said here or in another thread. This new iPad is the final drop. Will continue to use iDevices but will not looking to do some pro stuff with iPads anymore. Fun and sketch tool but there it ends for me now. Looking into hardware things as Maschine MK3 for the future.

I have a Pro 9.7 and I am considering ordering one of the new iPads Pro. Purely out of curiosity, what is it that makes these new iPads the final drop in terms of serious music making? I’m curious because what I saw on the event live stream and specs seem mostly positive, but discussions here seem mostly negative.

  • edited October 2018

@beathoven nothing to worry about. I think to sum it up:

    • how are we ever going to make music without a 3.5mm headphone jack !!!
    • what! these things are priced as premium luxury items? Why Apple, WHY! ???

The concerns are legitimate for those who just don't want to adapt to new standards for mobile, or those who just don't have the cash right now. For the rest of us, I think the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. I'm not going to be able to purchase one of these until the used or refurbished market catches up, but I'll look forward to it... maybe about a year from now.
