Personally I think the lack of mass USB media support is the worrying 'nail in the coffin' for serious music making with these iPad pros.
If Apple are nerfing their USB-C ports to make them incompatible with things then It leads me to suspect things like:
etc etc.
At this 'pro' price point one should per able to use the same accessories as available on mac or pc.
I might in the future buy one as the new pencil and general design looks good - apart from the lack of the actual home button and of course headphone socket
I would need a whole new game shifty, paradigm changer daw/host/system/thingy before even considering a 'Pro'.
Yes it’s this nerfing that makes me think Apple are rude A) calling them Pro,
asking for such high prices C) inferring the iPads do what the MACs can do.
Yeah the prices are what they are, but when they keep inferring that these are Pro iPads that can do it all, they are not telling the whole truth. Fact is they keep increasing the price levels of all entry level products, except for the ones which are being used to get rid of old product (looking at you standard iPad).
Yes these are meant to be premium product, that’s why people are commenting about what many would expect as premium features being absent.
Now if the reports are wrong and you can indeed use the new Pro iPads in the same ways as you can a MAC, then fine - hands up we’ve jumped the gun! If however, we are limited to using the poor selection (and likely poor quality for their price) widgets and you simply can’t hook up gadgets to that single port and use them, then I think many of the nay sayers have valid points.
I agree the lack of USB media support is unfortunate... but it doesn't put a "nail in the coffin" at least not for me. It has always been this way on iOS.
solution: A good home wi-fi router with USB storage + the FileBrowser app makes document and file storage dead simple. Actually for me this is so much better than the idea of hanging a cable and hard drive off the side of my iPad whenever I want to off-load files.
Mhhh....no way for me. I want to stream sample and not just copy files around.
iPad...The computer which makes things more complicated.
...which I think is an amazing deal. All that money left over for AUs. just use those AUX channels kids! YUM!
The iPad will never be a complete solution for me without being able to hook it up to external storage, all this mucking about with cloud storage is just ridiculous. And removing the headphone socket is a big two fingers up to the music making community.
However. I've spent well over a thousand quid on music making apps, so ditching the platform would be a silly move, and my Air 2 isn't going to last forever, so I'll inevitably at some point have to get one of the new Pro's. I've not had a lot of luck with second-hand kit, it always seems to have issues, so a second-hand old Pro isn't really a go-er for me.
I don't like Apple, and if I didn't have all these apps the Air 2 would be my last iPad. If they'd kept the price the same as the previous Pro and discounted that one (as they used to do, in the old days), not pissed around with removing features and adding the need for yet more dongles then I might have plumped early for this one. As it is I'll keep this Air 2 going until it blows up.
I presume you are referring to that standard iPad being a ‘great deal’? That really old screen that looks way worse than my Air2. It’s just a trick designed to get rid of old stock and really isn’t great value IMO, your mileage may vary of course.
I’m going to try second Hand with CEX, because they offer a two year warrenty.
It is just a matter of time before your thousand quid worth of apps become obsolete for compatibility issu with the next ios gen that will force it’s way on your device, so i’d say « freeze » your currents device and stop spending as if it was an « investment » for future.
Oh ok, didn’t know about them.
I won’t stop buying apps, as they’re a bit of a treat, but I’ve certainly cut down drastically on my spending over the last year.
Hopefully I’ll get another year out of the Air 2, and won’t update the iOS if it has compatibility issues. To be fair to Apple the last update actually improved performance slightly.
We have all the iPads at work and I really can't tell any significant difference with any of the screens. Glass is glass but mind you I still have my mind blown from my first Cintiq so maybe my senses are faulty. I personally think the trick was getting people to think they can see a dramatic difference.
About the app switching bottom scrolling bar that seems really usefull:
Let me guess: a feature only available for the new expensive shit.
I don’t know how to put this, Apple has become a swear in my vocabulary....
... I hope I’ll see the day that apple will disappear or maybe be crushed or purchased by a new company that will be more popular for having a more modern philosophy, innovative, making product that last, that are accessible, that does not stink in obsoletion marketing, that would help mankind survive the next era, not just suck it’s money...
REVOLUCION !!! ANTICAPITALISTA !!!

... for the 0.001% of iPad users who need more than 1 TB of storage
Sorry folks, but isn't all this Anti-Apple moaning a bit over the top? Why don't you all try the amazing DAWs and synths and apps available for Android!
There’s still always the option of the standard iPad which is relatively good value and quite capable.
I suppose it comes down to what your eyes get used to. I’ve compared them and personally I wouldn’t go back. Even for such a simple thing as watching a film on, that lack of reflection on my Air2 is worth it. Now if they did an updated processor in the Air2 spec, I’d be all over it if cheap. Because when we look at 10.5 256 Pros second Hand at £470 with a two year warrenty from CEX, for the sake of a few body scratches, it’s worth thinking about. The 10.5 is still new enough to be relevant with its 4gb ram. 2gb ram and an old screen really puts me off the older model. Plus the Pro model has better speakers for that in bed film watching lol
Plus getting the base model doesn't feel like buying a Cadillac with wind-up windows.
So the same amount of folks which like to use iPads for music creation.
Maybe you missed a thing but if i can use extern SSD´s f.e. i don´t would need 1TB....oh but if i want 6GB RAM i have to take it.
I know, i know all the whining but creeping in Apple´s a.. isn´t better at all
But iPads are of course great to look you tube...until you like to use more apps in the background.
Yah the RAM could potentially be sweet. Knowing how Apple only recently was throttling the AU Ram usage makes me totally skeptical of other silly under the hood hand ties that may be going on though. More RAM I can't use is just nice on a spec sheet. I just feel like going on the cheap for the next four or five years or so until the pro people come out of the woodwork, call the appropriate bullshit / fouls on Apple, external storage actually becomes a thing, Files improves, the dust settles, all the Fab Filters are out, maybe BM4 etc then I may feel compelled me to pony up the big boy dollars.
Minimalism - like the headphone jack that’s gone poof now
apple wants to sell you storage, headphones, and useless adapters that won’t move forward with the next machine.
Apple is in the overpriced ssd/ram business (man do they charge a premium)
Apple is in the peripheral business (I hate all the dongles to do different stuff, I have a drawer of them)
Apple is in the cloud business (but I am not)
Apple is into the renting of music/media (I am into media ownership)
Apple is now starting to get into subscription....which is cool if you don’t want multiple things, but if you want lots of different synths and daws this is gonna be more per month than house rent, car payments, etc.
The gateway drug is merely the device
Being forced into biometrics will be a complete no go for many people...
(if you wanna make music, you must first scan your face) fugg outta here.
I am starting to love the mpclive more and more every day, hardware is looking great again. The very thing that almost single handily destroyed the music instrument industry under Steve Jobs, is now the very thing bringing it right back under Tim Cook. Amaze Balls!
Great post!
ALSO...
Apple didn’t launch any pro apps with this new iPad other than a dj app and two video games? No updated GarageBand? No LPX? No fcpx? I’m really quite shocked there was no new GarageBand update? Weird.
It’s like.. “hey look at this super bad ass new thing we made...too bad we really don’t have new software for it”.
iOS is a minified version (fork) of macOS. Apple could have put the full version of macOS on iPad from day one if they wanted and run photoshop, logic, etc but iPad is a tablet they did it the right way and that’s about it.
What they could do is turn MacBook into a touch device like surface so we could have just one MacBook with raw power that does everything.
A device with rounded corners and thin bezels needs rounded screens otherwise they sharp corners protrude into the rounded corners
same as the new iPhones X - they call it pixel masking
I hope screen recording gets it with rounded corners
Stop complaining. Start making a difference.

True....but they say want to sell it as the "better" laptop. I say iPads are by far the best tablets but they are no way anywhere near to even a 400 dollar windows laptop if you really need a laptop with the common laptop workflow.
At the end they are right....they are all computers which should be used with a different workflow.
There are many things which works better and faster, even on older iPads than with a laptop but there are also a million things which works since decades on laptops and still are 10 times faster than an iPad ever could be.
90% of what i do with computers are music related. I don´t need/want a computer really for anything else and an iPad is not a replacement but indeed a great add on to it.
