I guess any company that reaches the stage and height of Apple would do exactly what Apple is doing now. So a bigger company acquiring Apple could do worse than what Apple is doing because to stay big, they have to do badass things; otherwise some competitor will eat their lunch!
They could start with Mainstage but i think that the GUI is the hardest part to port since most of the intern engine runs already in GB iOS.
But Apple still does great things for music creation. I just tested again a new macbook pro with Logic in the store and the touch bar combined with Logic and short cuts is just working fantastic.
Actually a new i7 6 core macbook pro would be my dream device.....just way to expensive sadly.
To have the same workflow i would need a better keyboard (which works for midi input in all DAW´s), bigger screen and a trackpad for iPad....but then i have a laptop for this.
There is still one plus for the iPad....multi-touch (which works also fine with up to 5 fingers on a trackpad with the right software).
I agree and I am afraid you’re right, unless the costumers wake up. Pretty utopic considering how weak we are at resisting to brand new shinny stuff.
I believe there are bigger chances apple falls because of civilization collapse due to environnement destruction we are all contributing to.
Ouch!
The recent study about 60% of vertebrate population loss over the last 40 years give me cold sweat every time I see it in the news.
Back to thread subject.
Logic remote does that work ATM...
I concur, they wouldn’t have necessarily needed to announce it at the event, but I would have expected some kind of a decent update to GarageBand following the launch of new iPads (maybe we’ll get one when they finally hit the shelves? Should I hold my breath?).
My big issue with Apple is that they push these hardware spec updates that should be able to handle more but either due to laziness or due to fear of alienating customers on older devices, they don’t push their software to do more things, and better.
For several years I remember many people on this forum said, “I really wish Apple would incorporate the Drummer feature from desktop GarageBand to the iOS version,” and finally they did it! Apple says, “Here, here is that feature you wanted, it’s possible to do this now,” except — how many drummers are available on desktop vs iOS? Oh, we only get about a third of fourth of those drummers, weird. Why can’t we have them all?
Some time later and the Sound Library is introduced, with more drummers! Not all of them, but a few more! Hey, great! And the introduction of a Sound Library feature in the app implies that we might get regular additions to sounds in between official updates with new features!
Except that doesn’t happen. Desktop GarageBand has two new brushed drum kits that I’d love to use on iOS, but at the rate of these updates coming it’ll be 2020 before I can use the kits in iOS.
Look at iMovie! When the first iPad pros came out, they made a point of mentioning that you could edit three separate lanes of 4K video in iMovie! Wow, impressive, Apple! Can I also do some chromakey work or use AUv3 effects on the audio track? Can I composite in a new layer or do some contrast and brightness adjustments? CAN I CHANGE THE FONT AND SCREEN LOCATION OF A TITLE IN IMOVIE?
No?
On a side note, I heard Tim Cook say “wow” and “amazing” so many times during that fucking event I had to sit down for a second for fear that I might have been having a stroke. /end rant (for now)
Here is a small issue I haven't seen addressed:
Since the old pencil won't work with new devices, and the new pencil won't work with old devices, I suspect the old pencil will be phased out as soon as possible. Since the battery in these things is tiny and non-replaceable, and since the pencil is always "on" (motion sensor running constantly), the lifespan of the rechargeable battery will not be that long.
While I intend to use my 12.9'' Pro 2 for a long time to come, it may become impossible to find a new pencil when my current one is past its useful life (i.e. having to constantly recharge).
I’m not shure about the battery life here...
Two examples: my first iPad 1 bought mid 2010 stills run well and still got plenty of hours to use when fully charged (this iPad 1 belongs to my girlfriends grandchildren nowadays, and they play around with a lot of children apps, every day!)...
Example 2: I’ve got an Siemens cordless home telephone that is still in use, every day, and we bought this 2003 and have NEVER exchange the recharging batterypack!
I can’t believe those bastards, Apple. I waited yet again through yet another event, and…
…still they’ve not announced any new products that make use of the Apple 30-pin connector. Why the fuck did I spend all that money on the Apple 30-pin CCK and 30-pin composite video adaptor and countless other peripherals and adaptors? It’s almost as if they’re moving away from the 30-pin connector altogether. Bastards.
I just saw that they also offer better GPU in the macbook pro 2018 (end of November available) which wasn´t even mentioned. So important info for professionals are not worth it for them for a little side note.
I hate it but i guess i have to accept that iPads will indeed replace the macbooks very soon.
I mean i would have no problem with it if they offer even bigger iPads with trackpad support and more usb-c.
The hardware seems good (beside the limited RAM) but it really lacks at software. All this power is great but no one seems to want to port their "big" things to iOS beside a few ones which are mainly for artwork and graphics,
Of course as sign that they really want to do it they must port FCPX and LPX first and the files app should be more like the finder and accept extern SSD´s.
Indeed...of course the new GPU options will be there only for extra money on top of the astronomical prices.
In this case, eBay may be your best bet mate.
Todays the day the new shiny iPad Pro is released...
And, for the first time in a long time, I'm not the slightest interested of buying a new iPad this year...
Even though I bought more then ten different iPads since 2010, this year will break that continuity...
Why? Hmmm...
Two thing's that woke me up in the Apple-addiction world is this totally unnecessary thing to remove the 3.5mm headphone jacket and the second thing is this 4GB RAM vs 6GB RAM diversity...
Hmmm...
If Apple wants this iPad to be really PRO, I can't understand why not every iPad Pro get's this RAM upgrade?
At least 256/512/1024GB versions of the iPad Pro should have been upgraded...
Now they wants us to pay $2000 for a 1TB iPad to get 6GB RAM... Apple is greedy as hell now!
Luckily my "old" 12.9" 2017 generation still runs decent ;-)
But, you never know, Apple can change that also with some strange and mystical upgrade let your iPad Pro become laggy (to force you to buy a new one)...
I just bought a 12.9 2nd-gen. My current Pencil will work with it and it’ll fit right into my existing workflow. Likely my last Apple purchase. I’ve had enough of Dongletown..
Agree 100%...
Took a trip to the Stockholm area Apple Store yesterday for a real look at the new iPad Pros (both 11” and 12.9”)...
Even though I got the money to buy a new shiny iPad Pro 12.9”, the greedy decisions Apple have done around the new generation is enough to refuse...
Take this new Apple Pencil as an example, it’s the same technology as the old one, but, as a greedy decision, they decide that the new pencil will not work on the the “older” iPads with pencil support, and, the old pencil will not work on the new Pad Pro (even though it’s the same hardware driving the pencil)... Grrrr!!!
And, the decision to remove the analog 3.5mm sound out (headphone jacket) is just the same greedy behavior!
Why should it be a better iPad when the headphone jacket is missing???
Unfortunately, one day Apple may gone to greedy and the people out there buying Apple devices for ages will just disappear... I’m one of them from now on...
I must say something else that is important, and that is that my current iPad Pro 12.9” 2017 generation (256GB/Celluar) working better than ever with iOS 12.11!
Fast and stable, and more heavy apps like Affinity Photo/Designer, Beatmaker 3, Auria Pro and so on runs smooth as hell!
Perhaps a good choice would to buy another 2:nd generation iPad Pro 12.9” and have as an backup in the future if the first one gets broken...
Old Pencil/iPad combination required pairing via Lightning. New Pencil likely pairs as part of the magnetic docking. In general, maintaining backward compatibility has always hamstrung the computer industry so I'm glad they didn't sacrifice progress to support the prior gen. The first gen Pencil is practically a prototype with the clunky Lightning plug and easily losable cap and female-female charging adapter. My current Pencil is sleeved in a crappy rubber sleeve with a magnet so it can "dock" to the iPad, but it keeps loosening and slipping, and lately it seems like my Pencil keeps running out of charge, requiring me to do the stupid Lightning charge and protect the vulnerable flimsy lever on the port. A non-trivial reason for me to upgrade is to get the better engineered solution and have the Pencil constantly charging up when I dock it.
All the backseat engineering cracks me up. I'm really going to miss having a 3.5" jack, but saying "just put one in there!" totally ignores physics. Apple's goal is to make the device as small as just a screen as possible. Everyone crying to just make the iPad thicker and bigger to have more ports and larger battery should just buy the laptop that they're reinventing.
The next couple of years are going to be a bit of an annoying pain with needing adapters, new cables, and waiting for "just the right USB-C hub", but I'm excited to USB-C all the things. Hopefully it'll make for easier power distribution and reduce the number of peripherals that require wall-warts.
About the new Pencil
"Apple confirms new "Pencil" Stylus won't work with Qi charging standard"
https://www.zdnet.com/article/apple-confirms-new-pencil-stylus-wont-work-with-qi-charging-standard/
So you can only charge it with the new iPad Pro.
I’m pretty sure if Apple would be intrested to make the old pencil work on the new iPad, they could sell us an dongle USB-C to Lightning to pair it...
It’s bluetooth, nothing else...
Come on, man. You're trying a little too hard. None of these things justifies the changes Apple made just for the sake of making them.
Really? Pencil 1 not supported on 3rd gen iPad Pros? Because of the lightning connector? Why not just sell a dongle?
It’s not reinventing a laptop to have a headphone jack and a couple ports to connect things with. Other tablet makers do it without issue, it’s only Apple who force you into a new workflow because they have to pay off a rapper for his BS headphone company...no thanks
