@syropcore
LoL!
Man you made my day :-)
@sonosaurus I loaded tj on my iPod touch last night and noticed there is a cool solution for transport buttons. That should be easy to port to ipad version?
I also wanted to add my love for tj. such a great app
Just wanted to say once more how much I love this app ! It's really the center piece of most of my mobile setups, it sends perfect midi clock to my volca's, all based on the tempo of the first loop recorded. It's also a great audio looper, midi looper, sound bank, midi controller ... The list is never ending.
But I can always imagine great new things that it could do. Your last announcements seem amazing, I really can't wait (and for midi record mmc fix).
The next additions I would love to see, is importing soundbanks from Dropbox (or so), share feature for soundbanks, maybe a outdoor editor for the instruments (could be a standalone iOS multitimbral power sampler like kontakt) and get us all sharing new instruments for it
Otherwise total midi binding (I think it's already on the list)
Can't wait for next update
I didn't know about the update, so that is great news!
ThumbJam is so good, you could easily make the argument that it's in the Top 3 music apps of any collection. And by that, I mean that the other 2 would be AudioBus and your DAW of choice. If I had this app and no other AudioBus input apps (the "desert island" analogy), I could still easily put together great-sounding music compositions with everything from strings to brass, to guitars, bass, synth and drums. And for a SAMPLE based app (not a synth with endless knobs and switches) to have so many diverse and versatile sounds that just sound good - it's really remarkable.
I'm a guitar player, but even before guitar, I was a violin player. Not one of any considerable skill, mind you, but enough to appreciate the instrument as someone who has played it. The string sounds in Thumbjam, and the interaction of vibrato with controls is AMAZING. There's a lot of great ways to make music on iOS and they all deserve a place at the table. But I can't of another one that nails the "feel" of making music on a small computer with a flat piece of glass as your interface.
I haven't encountered any of the glitches mentioned above, but if I had any gripe about the app, it'd probably relate to the recording of loops being just a little clumsy. I generally like to record parts internally to the metronome and then either playback or export (through AB) into a DAW, but the loop recorder can do some wonky things loops being different lengths or starting in different places.
Still, buy this app yesterday if you don't have it. For what it's worth, it takes a lot for me to even consider buying and keeping an app over 100MB, but I would keep Thumbjam if it were 5 times the size. The fact that there's even more great sounds available for download (and not as IAP's) speaks to the class developer team @sonosaurus really is.
Sorry for the length, but I wanted the rare chance to say thank you directly to the devs for a beautiful product.
Perfect app as it is, but since my timing sucks, I am just looking forward to finally using it with those new(old) Loopy - Audiobus sidepanel controls. Plus those new announced features are super exciting.

Timing with that touch/slide interface can be a problem at times, but I also don't think I'd abandon it, since it's great for legato and sustain. Some of the more staccato parts or quick passage are harder to get right, though.
I can't remember off hand, can you drive ThumbJam with a Virtual MIDI controller/sequencer? Pretty sure you can. Something like Midi Sequencer, Chord PolyPad, or Synthecaster might be a nice alternative as a MIDI controller, and all of those have scales built in too.
You can drive it with anything MIDI, even GeoSynth with its touch-per-channel and note-tied polyphonic pitch gliding. Not to mention other powerful multi-dimension hardware controllers like the Haken Continuum, Eigenharp, etc. Plus any other basic virtual midi source too, of course
Obviously I missed the AB2 launch with the update, as usual. Nothing major, just making sure all the wrinkles are out of the new stuff before I submit. It really is close, honest!
Definitely a desert island app. I just made a folder in my dock with the 9 music apps I want to use for the next few months (I need focus!) and TJ was not a hard choice.
I just actually picked this up last week and I'm amazed by it. It's probably the most versatile music app I've seen so far. I downloaded all the extra sounds. I still can't believe all those extra sounds are free, especially since they are some of the best samples I've ever heard. So far I've been using it with various MIDI controllers. Since I'm a quadriplegic I've also been using my voice as a controller, which Thumbjam allows! I expect when I dig deeper into it I"ll find even more ways to use it.
I've collected a fair amount of music apps so far but if I had to start eliminating a bunch for space considerations Thumbjam would be on my untouchable list. I hope it stays around for a long time and I look forward to this exciting update!
Hey @syrupcore what are the other 7? NANOSTUDIO is a gimme
, I'm guessing Loopy might be in there too.

This is such a gratifying experience to have it work so well. The ability to "sing" any instrument I want, and have it match key/ scale. I really can only imagine the feeling being even more gratifying in your circumstances.
Yes I totally agree...ThumbJam is the holy grail. It's my go app, I'm constantly creating. I even unconsciously play it on my phone while working on the computer (think stress ball). Thank you! Looking forward to update!

It's extremely gratifying. :-)
@spookyZoo TJ, Auria, Loopy, iSem, Magellan, FunkBox, SeekBeats. And, oh yeah, NanoStudio
. One slot remains.
I'm cheating though because I'm also going to allow: FX (holderness+aufx+jamup), AB and AudioShare which is probably another 9! I'll also use BM2 if I need virtual midi+audio but I'm trying to just get back into sampling into NS—I'm just way more productive in it. Oh, what a world it would be if it had midi clock+audio.
But I've been having too much fun with Funkbox+Midi Sequencer>iSem+nanoloop (midi sync!) to actually focus on the 9.
Really looking forward to TJ's 8 voices + Midi Sequencer's racks. My iPad 3 and wallet are not.
Ha, yeah...I figured you'd smuggle some delays onto the island!
Spent some hours inside Nanostudio today, first time in a while, it's just so slick and comfortable...those few extra features and you'd never leave.
Like your idea of concentrating on a few apps over a few months, limitation breeds creativity etc..
I have quite a few apps that still hold a bit of mystery, like Sunvox, Audulus, Werkbench...I keep meaning to spend a week in each of them ....good intentions and all that!
ThumbJam really is great. I was surprised by the quality of the samples. Looking forward to the update on this one for sure. Having the 8 instruments loaded at once all being controlled on different midi channels might make it dethrone Sampletank once and for all in my go to setup.
So, i have been intrigued by tj, but never took the time to dig into it. This thread was a great reminder. The samples are absolutely amazing. I think i could play with the string ensemble alone for a lifetime. Can't wait to work this into my live set. I have a bunch of sounds from other apps that are in need of upgrade and i think tj will do the job.
Thumbjam is awesome. One of the first and still one of the best.
Is there any way to completely bypass the reverb?
awesome sounds...love it
Definitely in my Top 10!
@WMWM said:
Sure, just go into Edit->Effects and turn off the Reverb there. But I notice that it gets restored whenever you load another preset that enables it, so for the moment you'll have to save your own presets with it turned off.
WMWM go to the bottom left corner to edit, then go to effects, you can turn on and off reverb delay and filter.
Sorry didn't see sonosaurus already answered.
Has anyone built their own instrument(s)? I'm very interested in trying it, but am severely technically challenged.
I've tried, and it's very easy to do @MoonWolf. The only problem is that the sample clips/pops/clicks if not perfectly looped. The crossfade bug has been fixed however in the upcoming version, so I'm excited to get my hands on it. I've been waiting for over a year for that single fix. :-)
Once this issue is fixed, TJ will become my go-to sampler! :-)
Very cool, thx @audiojunkie. How did you do it, making your own .zip file? Also, is there any way to choke a cymbal in TJ?
It's been several months since I tried doing it (I've been waiting for the fix), but the instructions for making instruments using ZIP files are found somewhere here:
http://thumbjam.com/
However, you CAN just audiocopy/paste or record the individual samples, and then map and loop them from within Thumbjam itself. :-)
I'm not sure about cymbal choking in TJ, since I never really considered it for drumming (even though the capabilities for drumming are there). Sorry... :-(
I'm sure we'll know more when the new version is released (which should be really soon)! :-)
DrumJam supports choke groups, but you can't make instruments for that in the app yet. You actually could do it by hand and load them up via wifi transfer but I haven't released the spec for the format yet.
Not sure if ThumbJam will get that feature in this next version, that will probably need to wait for the next one when I overhaul the instrument creation UI.
