OT: Transfering from an iMac to MacBook - advice?

For the last year, I’ve hijacked the family iMac to try and make music. I’m finally getting my own MacBook, dedicated to music.

I’ve got a lot of software on the iMac, including Logic Pro X, Sugar Bytes Bundle, Arturia V Collection, and an assortment of other synths.

Can I just transfer everything over? I imagine I’ll need to reinstall some things? I’m new to all of this, so any tips or tricks or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Connect the two and use Migration Assistant to copy your entire setup over, unchanged. You can also do this from your local backup, so you don’t tie up the iMac during the process.

But you maybe should check your EULA (end user license agreement) of your plug-ins and/or ask the developers if things are unclear.
Depending on the developer you might remove a license from your old machine (especially if they using copy protections like i-lok) if you just are allowed to use it on one machine or you want the unsused not eat up one place. Some offers endless use on any of your machines. Some give you 2 or 3 licenses. Some 2 but not to be used at the same time etc. etc.
That is a part which works more easy in the iOS world (but has it‘s dark sides too).
