    Sure. Incoming MIDI and even incoming AU Parameters. It's really a programmable AUv3 MIDI plugin, where the entire boilerplate plugin is already set up and running for you, including the UI, AU parameters, host transport and state information, etc. You're also free to not use any of that and just write a simple filter that sends notes to different channels depending on their velocity or something. Sky's the limit and stuff :)

    My brain is still wired to think in terms of analog, so MIDI's still a foreign language. More familiar with voltage and gates, so these suggestions probably won't work with MIDI.

    But here's a couple.

    Ratchet/Repeat/Divide/Multiply/Delay/Thin incoming MIDI, only active on a divison of the tempo, with Probability.

    Switch between 2 or more incoming MIDI streams; switch modulatable by tempo-division, LFOs, or comparators?

    Invert/Flip incoming MIDI, like Fugue Machine or Atom...

    Sample/Toggle & Hold incoming MIDI?..to make a bassline out of a melody?

    MIDI Logic modules? and/or/nor/xor/nand/xnor? Not possible with MIDI?

    Make Noise Cartesian Snake Sequencer: Randomly jump within 16-steps of pitch values, quantized to a scale.

    Korg Kaossilator touch-keyboard with quantizer; record touch gestures for sequencing notes.

    8x8 Touch grid with semi-random sequencer 'games' like the Pittsburgh Game System: Manual Below.

    Chaos (not random) generators, with min/max control. Easy, right? :)

    Great list. Chaotic generators, MIDI gate processing with ratcheting and logic, inverters, and shift registers would all be great for me.

    So I bought AUM and Rozeta and managed to find 20 minutes last night to have a first go.

    I had a simple setup wired up in no time with a Cells sequencer transposing a bassline sequencer with some LFOs controlling filters and other weird and wonderful stuff.

    It’s nice that you can record each channel separately in AUM.

    I think this is going to be fun.

    It’s even made using IAAs less horrible ;-)

    I often find myself in the same position. Been trying to start these sorts of sessions with Rozeta Cells loaded in slot 1. With it's slow clock divisions, as well as its ability to turn off the clock entirely and trigger cells manually, it's a pretty great transposition source. If you want it to run slower (I often do), just double up the cells with the same notes.

    Yes, please. I'd love it if AUM 1.4 (2.0?) were to consist entirely of alternative ways to visualize your set up. Control connection graph, audio connection graph, 'tight' mixer view... along with novel ways to interact with them (like the MIDI routing grid).

    I don't see the harm in a third party midi clip launcher but what I'd like to see most of all, is musical division triggering of clips, mutes and FX bypasses within the the likes of AB, aM and AUM. This would help remove the jagged edges from jam sessions and also help with the creation of stem creation that requires less editing when taken into a linear DAW for mixing and mastering.

    An interim step for "the three A apps" might be to implement something like Rozetta's snapshot slots. All three apps allow for project saving (or 'state' saving in AB parlance) but I'm talking about the ability to save and recall several states within the same project. Quickly. If those states could be recalled via MIDI... boom.

    Since, with AUv3s anyway, the state of all parameters would be saved in a snapshot, this would enable the creation of something like AudioMulch's "MetaSurface" (jump to 3:00). Not a very exciting video but hopefully the idea comes across.

    I thought I’d be able to automate the triggering of sequences with another sequencer firing it off as if it were a note rather than having them all running all the time or under manual control.

    If the rozetta sequencers has a mode that rather than run continually whilst listening for transposing notes they could use the midi in note as a trigger as well and only run for as long as the key is held down.

    Perhaps it can already do this, I’ll have to take a peek into the documentation.

    Something baked into the apps would certainly be nice, but since many parameters can be MIDI controlled it's possible to set this up, albeit in a slightly convoluted way. Just run something like Rozeta XOX (with "808 timing" off ; ) and use the notes from any drum track as the control message for a track's mute, etc. This way you can automate mutes and have them synced to musical divisions.

    FX Bypass is a bit harder as there isn't a direct control for that, but you could set up two channels with a full bus send from the first to the second and then set a MIDI mapping that controls the mute for both channels, but inverted for one, so when you send the MIDI note one channel is muted and the second is unmuted.

    This is dependent on the functionality of the app.

    Rozeta doesn't quite have this. For all of the sequencers there's the "Auto Play" button which can be switched to "MIDI Trig", however, this doesn't trigger the sequence when it receives a note, but, rather, it "unmutes" the playing sequencer; the sequencer stays locked in it's underlying time to the host.

    For the functionality you want, StepPolyArp Unit will do what you want (and a ton more); you set up a sequence that can be both triggered and transposed by the incoming note(s).

    Having both SPAU and Rozeta is incredibly useful.

    Then you'll probably want Fugue Machine for its "playability"...

    Atom for precise editing...

    Cality for weird processing...

    MIDIEcho for less-weird processing...

    StreamByter for everything...

    Photon to record the output of everything...

    No doubt that would be the best solution for the vast majority of people.

    For me, personally, I'm all about "playing" the sequencers and recording that as a live performance. I'm actually very happy with the tools available, I just want a few more MIDI tools (without having to code them myself; I just don't have the time or headspace!)


    I'm curious if anyone is familiar with the old Amiga sequencer "Bars and Pipes"?

    The basic concept was a MIDI sequencer (the "Bars") that had "Pipes" in front and behind the tracks. On the pipes you could place tools to perform MIDI manipulations (and other things). The pipes in front of the "bars" would affect incoming MIDI and be recorded to the tracks. The pipes after the tracks would apply effects to the outgoing MIDI in realtime in a non-destructive manner.

    There were tons of tools available including third-party tools. Everything from "standard" MIDI tools: quantization, MIDI echo, modulation (shifting notes ignoring key), transposition (shifting notes in key), etc. To more sophisticated arpeggiators, accent randomizers, step sequencers, tools to generate first species counterpoint, etc. To things like control of the NewTek Video Toaster, syncing with the SunRize AD516 card (8 tracks of 16bit 44.1k audio in 1992!) and ports to ARexx (an Amiga scripting language). There were send and receive tools for creating feedback loops. Branching and merging tools for cross-pollinating tracks (e.g. one track transposes another), and lots more.

    Documentation of the tools is in the Bars&Pipes Tool guide on this page. Unfortunately it's in AmigaGuide format, but they're ASCII files that can be read with any text reader. Lots of good ideas there.

    If someone were to revamp this idea I think it would be a hit.
