Sound idea , makes massive sense . I’m only just getting to grips with spectrum n love what I’ve managed to grasp so far . It’s a shame that the likes of Roli , Akai etc don’t have some sort of system in place where devs can be nominated , or maybe some sort of link to their sales from the app shop , hit x amount of sales and your put forward into a dev draw ...
What I still don’t get is why would you want to sequence MPE? As far as I know it was developed to provide better ways of expression for playing like one plays a violin, guitar, drums...).
So if Xequence is ok without MPE, Spectrum would be great with it as Animoog, Volt, Quanta are, not only for Roli players but also for us Linnstrumentalist (there’s more to MPE than Roli).
@SevenSystems a good way for you to “understand” why the people involved with that specification would just be talk to them? Just write to Roger Linn, ask in the Polyexpression community https://community.polyexpression.com/
I see it as a better option than just criticizing in a forum where they can’t answer, anyway.
And @SilverK Roger Linn has almost every app that supports MPE listed on his website. I believe there is a similar list in the Roli website.
These suggestions make sense to me. I am disappointed that @SevenSystems seems to have ruled out MPE support for Xequence. I purchased Xequence 2 and probably wouldn’t have if I’d known he was so set against supporting MPE. I will be on the lookout for a sequencer that does have a way to record MPE to use with Audiobus 3, AUM, and apeMatrix.
Read on another thread that Audio Evolution Mobile Studio can record MPE, as well as Photon. I guess MPE users can record MIDI to those then maybe export to X2 if desired.
Not defending SevenSystems or anything. Just thinking out loud of workarounds.
Playing Spacecraft granular in MPE mode using a seaboard block has been very enjoyable. Also recording MPE in bitwig has been fascinating. Editing MPE in bitwig is a breeze.
What I do is record audio. If it doesn’t sound good I play it again. It’s good for practicing and I learn a lot. That’s to me the best way of using MPE.
I also use sequencers for drums parts, I enjoy Noir, Xynthesizr, Autony and record MIDI a lot but I don’t have patience to manipulate midi data on a daw. I want to play!
@InfoCheck Really not happy about the decision, but here and now, it doesn't make a lot of sense to support MPE for technical reasons, and I doubt I have enough influence on the companies behind it to make them fix it so that it is compatible with the channel system that has served everyone well for nearly 40 years.
I might add polyphonic control (i.e., PolyPressure, which is what eg. Animoog uses), recording and editing to Xequence at some point, but even then, I'd probably wait for a sane transmission standard before I support the current state of MPE.
Yes, I'm a bit stubborn on this... but most people are stubborn on weird things 😉
I use MIDI more for composing than performance - at least not performance in the same way I play guitar or violin. That's one of the reasons I haven't invested in a MPE controller.
Back to the OP, looks like our friend is only $65 away from the goal!
We can do this!
Unfortunately, it's rarely the best technology gets picked up as the standard. There's always a more elegant solution than the clunky one that becomes mainstream.
Fingers crossed that midi 2.0 provides some better solutions
I can see why Xequence’s design would break with MIDI MPE. There are of course a lot of use cases where Xequence will work well so I’ll use it for those. I’ll have to mix and match MIDI sequencers as needed to accomplish my goals and not wait around for one that meets all my needs as it’s unlikely to materialize. It’s how I’ll get around my own stubborn weird workflows.
I think MPE just uses multiple midi channels, nothing exotic
It's nothing exotic until you want to use MIDI channels for their actual purpose -- controlling multiple instruments 😉
I am not a dev , so can’t really imagine the complexity of adding MPE , but since nowadays you can set a midi port per controller/app , I don’t think there is a chance running out of midi channels.
Can you also control multiple plugins hosted in AUM separately from an external app through MIDI (one of the main use cases for AUM) without using channels?
No , but I never said that there is no need of channels. Just that MPE can be used in a dedicated midi port/routing (not channel, port) without affecting other ports
Yes you're right there of course. But that's my main gripe with MPE - the "AUM as AU host, external app as sequencer and recorder and control surface" concept is now quite firmly established in iOS land and it's a pity that MPE is incompatible with it as it stands. But yeah, nothing that can't be remedied by AUM offering 16 independent MIDI destinations (I've never tried to actually create more than one, but I do suppose iOS lets you). Maybe it could even auto-create an appropriately named destination for each new channel?
But it's really getting off-topic... should maybe create a new thread about how to make MPE compatible with existing workflows.
Sorry for the noise 🙂
I’ll try to make for the off-topic , giving the link again

almost there!!!!!! Awesome!
Well, "external app as sequencer" concept is not quite firmly established as the best design in iOS land. The alternative (Atom) of having multiple AUv3 midi instances for control would not run into this MPE problem (since each instance can separately be routed to a single destination).
Yes, but I still have to see someone finish a complex song arrangement with dozens of tracks / instruments with dozens of automation lanes with this approach! 😎
With KB1 and Velocity Keyboard, you don't really need one, just get another iPad.
Our friend is still stuck at $65 away from the goal.
Do y'all want this MPE thing in Spectrum badly enough?
It's happening regardless at this point, thank you everyone who contributed!
I came late to the party (I was in the Norwegian mountains when this came out) but I made it to the 500$ because MPE is good and thanks to @burns_audio and the Linnstrument rocks.
Woo hoo! Thank you!
I can provide a little update. The next version of Spectrum won't be "MPE aware" but in MIDI OMNI mode it will track and apply modulations on a per-channel basis. When selecting a specific MIDI channel, all other channels will be ignored.
@WillieNegus sent me a Roli Seaboard, which was incredibly kind of him. I have it now but can't seem to bluetooth pair it with my ios devices, so I need to contact Roli support. It seems to work fine over USB to my laptop so I'll use a powered USB hub if I can't get bluetooth working.
Have you tried pairing it with AUM? Also there is a roli ios app which allows Bluetooth pairing.
Oh! I would like to hear a little more about this. What’s the difference between what you’re going to do and actually implementing MPE and how it fits with asking for funds for something and then doing something else?
